It does seem that we glorify the concept of cultural diversity while at the same time criticizing any discussions that mention unpleasant distinctions.
A stereotype has to come from some place. Every popular stereotype has to be rooted in truth. And by the way, why is it such a bad thing that we point out bad qualities in a group? For instance, poor neighboorhoods often have a more black people than white. 50-80% of those families don't have a father figure. Both black and white families don't have a father figure, but its higher among the black community. If we focus on the largest effected community, we can make a better future.
Brad Hall a lot of black fathers leave their family. if we as a nation could figure out why, we could fix it. to figure out why, we have to agree that it (broken homes in the urban neighborhoods) happens.
Christopher, stereotypes are wrong because it leads to negative assumptions that all people of that specific race are seen within that stereotype. That is an unfair judgment, and negative judgments leads to racism. For instance, I could perceive & stereotype blacks and Latinos as groups who are the majority of people in prisons. Now whether true or false, people will start believing that perception. However, it is very important not to look at stereotypes and look at the individuals, that is the fair thing to do. Furthermore stereotypes don't leave room for the truth. Yes, there is a high percent of blacks and Latinos in prison, but the reason is because the judicial system on average do not prosecute whites as harshly as blacks and other minorities, that is fact and definitely not a stereotype. Also even before we meet someone we base our perception of them by stereotypes. I'm Jewish and a student of mine perceived Jews as dishonest. I laughed so hard at that.
Gidget Hrobowski this was my opinion 2 years ago, man. I guess I still fundamentally believe that generalizing isn't inherently bad, but I would really only leave it at "people with no or bad father figures suffer." I would cut out the part about focussing on the race aspect of it, as it does lead to allowing real racists to feel validated, which is inherently bad.
Good comeback, especially the part where you told me you weren't talking to me even though your previous reply addressed to ME said you were only referring to me as stupid.
Adam worked his ass off to get to where he is by being a carpenter and boxing instructor until he was 30. From then on he worked hard on loveline, his radio show, and now his record breaking podcast. I guarantee he works harder building on his podcast than most other Americans.
I'm from San Diego and I use to think the exact same thing as you dude. That all changed until I moved to New Orleans lol. When watermelons are in season down here most black people have about 3-4 watermelons in their carts when I go to Walmart. More black people consume watermelons down here than any other race.
prejudice 1.an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. 2.any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable. 3.unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group. The difference is too minimal. It's a widely known fact that racists refuse to believe they are racist, and will try to justify it by any means possible.
"Formed beforehand, without knowledge"That is a crucial and huge difference. If i were to look down upon Arab culture without any knowledge of it, that would be prejudice. If, however, i observed the dominance of theocratic dictatorships throughout the majority of Arab nations that execute homosexuals, subjugate women and persecute Jews and decided this culture was significantly less civilised than my own, that would be fair and rational judgement. Can you really not understand the difference?
I don't get how the watermelon stereotype is still around. I worked at a Grocery Store for 4 years and rarely ever saw a black person buy watermelon. Chinese people were the ones who always bought tons of it.
I'm very grateful someone like Adam exists. Especially when I was called a racist when I said that most Middle Eastern people are assholes and that they're primitive, live in a giant ashtray, and believe in stupid shit and just kill each other.
Black culture is basically bullshit. We are clearly cooler than this bullshit going on today contemporarily. I mean come on. Hip hop now is absolutely the lamest shit possible. No creativity what so fucking ever!
nope I never saw them like that until I went to that school. I always thought people who said that stuff were stupid. Then I had the shock to realize I was the one wrong.
Thomas Sowell makes a point that the main reason racism exists in America is because our Constitution states that all men are created equal. The only way to justify slavery, then, is to say that slaves are less than men. I just thought I'd share...
"The difference is we done it on a bigger scale because we were more advanced, as we had the biggest empire ever." You talking about the Mongolians? cuz they had the biggest empire ever.
@eleutheromaniac Usually food-related ones aren't factually acurate but they stick because they become tongue-in-cheek commentary and are facilitated and uttered by even the "victim". Behavioral stereo-types are the more accurate ones.
If Racism means "the recognition and appreciation of traits and differences of race & ethnicity", then maybe racism is a good thing. A test: If the above definition isn't 'Racism', then what word/term do we have for that "recognition and appreciation of racial traits and differences" ? And if you/we don't have a commonly used term for it, WHY is that ? Does your media/academia discourage you from "appreciating your racial traits and ethno-culture", and so aren't taught a neutral/positive term?
These guys took honesty to the point of being assholes. That may be regional though; heavy urban people tend to be more honest and open, and my sensitivity may be due to growing up in a neighborhood away from a city.
Bahia, when Americans say "Asians" the default connotation is East Asians. And when Americans say "blacks" they mean African Americans. It's that simple. We're not speaking for an entire race. We're speaking about the race and culture most proximate to us. Stereotypes aren't stupid. They exist for a reason. Mutual observations.
Thanks for making the point. Stereotypes serve a purpose. They allow the lazy to use the conclusions of others. They say Asians are poor drivers, see this sorta supported four or five times and some suppose its true. Esp. if they don't much care. Look at all the time saved researching and thinking.
I went from going to a 95% white school to a 99% black school. Every stereotype I had ever heard about them came true. They had the black pride stuff all over the walls. The only thing white kids would do is either become a Neo-Nazi or a Wigger there was no inbetween.
"looking down on another person culture is in fact being prejudice". No, it's not. I also don't look down on Mexican culture. I look down on Arab culture because it is homophobic, antisemitic, misogynistic and primitive, though. It's not prejudice, it's judgement. Historically, whoever was the most powerful oppressed the other people. Blacks, asians and whites have all enslaved people. The difference is we done it on a bigger scale because we were more advanced, as we had the biggest empire ever.
Im discussing this by the minority to minority ratios incarceration estimations of 2,096,300 prisoners held in local jails federal and states prison 841,000 were incarcerated 693,800 were white and 442,000 were hispanic granted this estimation did not include other minorities or any one who was accounted for as 2 or more minorities.roughly speaking they make up for 40% of 94% of prison populations there are more of them in prisons than other races by extension they are most of the population.
the thing adam doesnt understand is that the real damage of racism is that, if it doesnt get squashed out of a culture, then it can turn around into a self-fulfilling thing. i mean, the most racist people against blacks, for example, are other blacks. the people who kill the most blacks, rob the most blacks, are other blacks. and i would wager that the people who act the 'n' the most, are the people who are most comfortable using the word the most.
No, they didn't. Check Wikipedia for "Biggest Empires Ever". British first, then Mongol. In both size of land owned and population, the British Empire is larger. 33.7 million km, for the British, 24.0 million km for the Mongols. 458 million people for the British, 110 million people for the Mongols.
sounds like you have some good information there, but due to a lack of punctuation and sentence structure, i find it incredibly hard to decipher what you are actually trying to say...perhaps you have a website like or something to that effect?
Imagine you're a black man in America in the 1800's. You're a slave, you're treated like an animal, you have no rights, and the ones responsible for this mistreatment are all white guys. Not hard to imagine, is it? Now ask yourself... are you pissed off because of the way you are being treated, or do you have a problem with the skin color of those mistreating you? It's not about race, it's about BEHAVIOR. Stay in school, take care of your family, and you don't need whitey's permission for ANY OF IT.
I would think anyone with an ounce of common sense would realize that the majority of blacks do not have a problem with white people's skin color, that is generally a white issue. I believe that black people's major issue is unfair treatment, this countries serious lack of equality in employment, policing, housing, economic opportunities just to name a few things that I am aware of and a need for racism to be seriously addressed in this country instead of the constant denial. Thereby I believe most black people could care less about the color of a white persons skin, as a black friend of mine once stated that doesn't put food on the table and I agree with him.
+Ryan Nickens That is what you are implying judging by your comment. Love, I'd gladly go back & forth with you on this issue but I have got to study for final exams...take care....
@atikker This is very cute. You're just happy if your homeland is mentioned. I guess we americans don't really appreciate that b/c almost everything- good or bad is about us. Yay for Finland!!!!
@79pensacola I'm not brain washed. I just don't agree w/ his whole premise that, "I make an observation regarding a few people, so then I will make a vast generalization about the entire group until I am specifically proven wrong." I think that type of thinking is just short sighted and it's an easy cop out. Oooh I'm so edgy and controversial, going against the man! Yeah Carolla, whatever.
Just watched the George Lopez HBO special "It's not you, it's me". It is one of the most racists things I have ever watched. He has a mocking voice he uses whenever talking about white people. It also included derogatory statements (in English and in Spanish) towards blacks and gays. However, no one says anything about it because he is a minority. However, when a White comedian like Adam says anything remotely negative about minorities, he gets called a racist. WTF?
@fibrillatorD "N" is just an arbitrary contruct, it doesnt have to exist at all. so you can say "stereotypes exist for a reason," but, at least as far as black stereotypes go, you can just as easily say, "the behavior wouldn't have to follow if the stereotype weren't there to give it legs." i mean, adam knows that people take the path of least resistance, so it shouldnt surprise him that any black person raised around the "N" word would subconsciously begin to think and behave like one.
Sterotypes HAVE truth in them but they aren't 100% true for every member of a certain race. Example: Someone whos black but is a vegetarian, but according to stereotypes all black people eat chicken, so what is that person an anomaly? No
Measuring population is kinda silly since the Mongol Empire was a good 500 years before the British Empire. A better measurement would be to see what % of the earths population was under their control. I bet if you did that they would be a lot closer. British would still be higher though I'm sure.
Yeah plus who stereotypes Italians as being lazy? All the Italian-Americans I know are very hardworking no nonsense people....Not a lazy or forgiving of failure culture at all through they are very family oriented.
@spyu no most people who like to point fingers saying racists are usually the bigoted racist. being truthful and speaking you mind is no longer ok in america
When did i say anyone was below me? Do you not look down on homicidal homophobia, genocidal antisemitism and primitive misogyny? If you don't, i'd suggest it's you who has completely missed the point of what Adam is saying.
@thomasford No, first off morality is subjective. Different societies have different morals. People look down at horror upon female circumcision (which they should completely retarded) but yet dont blink an eye at male circumcision which is widely accepted, meanwhile some little kid is cryin his tears out cause some random priest is gonna cut part of his dick off.
Carolla is wrong because stereotypes change constantly depending upon the socioeconomic status of the group. Seriously, look at the historical stereotypes of the Irish/Germans/whatever.
@ForgottenSoul700 Agreed. I'm Hispanic and take no offense we know not all of us are like that but a few too many are.... But its funny how if a white person says any of that they're labeled neo-nazis its bull sh!t
If you guys think this is racist, you're stupid. This is simple fact and the longer you delude yourselves and tell yourselves it's racist to talk about any problem, the longer those problems will exist. Nobody perpetuates a stereotype but the people the stereotypes are about. Unless your logic is,"Don't talk about something that is true, because if it's about another race then that makes you racist" That's the type of idiocy that keeps people down, and keeps stereotypes alive and healthy
