Adding a Scupper to my Plastic Boat

This is not meant to be an exact method for you to copy. More as a proof of concept. There are definitely much better ways to plastic weld then I demonstrate in this video. And you WILL void your warranty if you do this. Many Pelican boats are guaranteed for life, so it is something to consider. But if you are tired of bailing out your boat and are a courageous do-it-yourselfer, this might be exactly the inspiration you're looking for.
Check out the Bass Raider and other Pelican boats here;

You can make your Scupper self bailing by putting a reverse scoop on it (underneath) To describe it... imagine if you were to cut off the bottom of a toy plastic boat and then cut the stern off of that and then glue it around the Scupper hole bow forward. As water flows by it will create suction and any water that's in the boat will actually get sucked out. I had that type of drain on my 66 lone star aluminum boat and if you forgot to put in the drain plug. You simply start the boat and take off and all the water got sucked out the bottom and you then put the plug back in. I learned that half way across the lake when I stopped and water came rushing in... I took off back to the dock and it was empty less than half way back. I put the plug in while moving and headed back out to the lake. Someone in the 60's was a smart SOB!

Marty i have the same boat and when the water fills to the height of where the power wires go through the hull this is where the water gets in the inside hull . I have thought about doing something like that but i couldn`t stand to cut that big of hole in mine so my next alternative was to put a Bilge pump with a automatic float switch but also my boat doesn`t sit in the water everyday . Thanks Marty for putting my mind at ease about drilling a big hole.

Hey that is pretty ingenious! I was thinking about it for a while and thought of a little bit more of a modification. If you could install a check valve and add a 90° fitting to the bottom it would actually suck the water out when you are underway and not let water flow in when stationary. I love how you do modifications on things.

I have owned my Pelican Bassraider 10e for 2 years and have never had such a problem. Got mine set up with a casting deck up front, a foot controlled bow mount trolling motor, an adjustable swivel deck seat, quick deploy anchor/winch set up, and many other extras. Pelican should not change a single thing about this boat.

A bulkhead with rubber gasket on both sides may have done well since the surface was so flat. Would look "clean" at least on to top side. Definitely needed anyway you went about it. Pelican should add to future boat.
@marybachmann
@marybachmann 5 лет назад
3:10 lol That was a good fix. A tarp over it would have just filled up with water. My mooring cover is useless that way, unless I add some kind of tent frame to hold it up. Even my Hobie gets water in the hull, and it HAS scuppers. Condensation, and rain seeps in. The irritating thing about it is that the drain plug is on the back end instead of the front, so you can't put it on end to drain because the rudder is in the way. Maybe I'll drill a hole in the front...

When you put the batteries in the back and it started filling with water I was hoping you'd fire the motor up because I think if you were moving it would have sucked the water back out but I could be wrong. I know on the back of a lot of boats, example aluminum jon boats have plugs that you can access from inside the boat while you're actually moving and if you fill your boat up with rainwater for example you simply run the motor with the plug out and it will suck the water right out of it. Now I realize those are in the back of the boat which is better for suction but I think there would be still suction on the bottom of the boat possibly somewhat dependent on the angle of the boat.

Very cool! Did you test by filling with water from a hose to see if it drains (on land and in the water)? In our old Boston Whaler, we could have six inches of water ("Hey, who forgot to put the plug in?!") in the boat and as soon as we fired up and started forward it would drain fairly quickly. Greetings from NYC!

Well what was a question to me is now answered. I'm big guy and I wanted well want one of them boat. Being disabled can't take bog boats out anymore. I lovey Jon boat but don't like the middle seat rather have walk thru. Being my knees are bad bad. So I want to roundabout bad love the way there made roll to the water lol. But way out my budget. A kayak can't use due to my knees and back and I'm big guy. So wanted boat like that. But being big guy 365 or so didn't no if I could use one. Well yeah that went way down but if I add my gear to the front that will help. But I'm not useing motor be trolen motor on the front or back maybe I can sit in the middle and will work even better. Just want small boat easy to load unload and pull if have to pull on shore. So thanks for the plug idea and adding so much weight. Awesome vidoe. Now to find one I can afford but man really love to have a roundabout boat be a dream come true. Have a good weekend sir. God bless

Good idea. Just a little sloppy. You do everything with perfection, I was surprised. I have a paddle boat similar to your other one that I put a two car battery electric minkota on. I bottom painted it to leave it in the salt water. Put a fish finder and Bimini on it. Trouble is it fills up every rain. I have to hook up a temporary bilge pump to empty it. I am looking for another solution. Wish I could send photos. Many people ask me to make them one, but it's a labor of love ❤.....

When you put a trolling motor box hold down brackets. Did you use the screws that came in box and rtv under brackets to eliminate water entering. Or did you use longer screws? I'm surprised that boat isn't foam filled from the factory. You could probably drill a few holes and fill it with A/B foam to prevent it from filling up to begin with. Another thought you might wanna look into plastic welding solvents like the SCIGRIP line. No heat required. Takes some practice but it's amazing stuff.
@frankorosz901

The boat is light. Store it upside down until you need it then roll it over and use it. People have been doing that typev of storage of boats for thousands of years instead of drilling holes in their boats.
