Wino & Nads are on the hunt for blue swimmer crabs again with the GoPro strapped to the bottom of the net. They were running fairly thick, so we got our bag limit of 40 blue swimmer crabs within a few hours. Here's how it happened..

Good video mate, noticed a couple of females in there and those damn Trumperters. ... caught 8 nice big blue crabs in West Lakes last week, just from the shore.

Cheers mate! This was a few days before Xmas'17, so you usually get the odd female in the area that we crab in at that time of year. Feb'/March, they're mainly all males, with the females usually in closer to shore. Still plenty around now - probably coz there's barely a snapper in the Gulf to chow down on 'em..

is that squid/octopus tentacle ur using? an old barnicle brain told me not to use these things because it resembles octopus (their natural predator) guess old mate didnt know what he was talking about because ur catching heaps out there!

Squid flaps & heads & pilchards mainly. The heads work well in the bait cage, as they often stick out and the crabs can grab them and chew on them. Sometimes they leave the net if they can't get to the bait. But yeah, a mix of squid and fish works well. 👌

Wino15 nice advice. Here in sydney theyve just started to run now that the water is warmer. i went out on Friday last week and caught two from the shore line on my rod on some pilchards. i dont have a boat so i cant get to the ideal spots but ive been doing it since i was about 7 with my old man and he taught me a few land based crabbing tricks to always get a feed. I used to use store bought mullet to no success...that is because the mullets we get now are farmed and pellet fed (they loose the oily omega 3 smell). thats why its not as effective. to be honest i just use any type of fresh fish i catch like Bream, Tailor, Herring etc. i will try squid head this weekend mate and see how it goes. i like standing from the shoreline and casting out a mesh bait on my rod into the deep channels as well. never know when you might attract a passing bluey u guys have it awesome in SA and QLD. ive seen the videos! bloody muddies and blueys everywhere. You can even spot them as your walking in the shallows, CRAZY! you guys can pick up swimmers using rakes in the shallows because there are so many! and dont get me started on the muddies u guys get. ive been trying for muddies in sydney for the last 4 years and i retrieved many empty nets however i did manage to pick one up one night during a storm. idk how that happened but damn it was a nice feeling pulling up a heavy pot for once. you guys keep having fun out there and stay safe

@@btriggap9982 in nsw you'll more likely get a blue swimmer than mud crab but you might wanna try on georges river, hawksbury river, lane cove river or ( this one is pretty far away ) bega river ( some of my mates suggested these rivers for muddies )

G'day Rex, used a GoPro Hero 5 Black edition. Picked it up from the Good Guys for about $390. Strapped the camera into the net with a GoPro wrist strap and hope like hell a shark didn't take off with the net.. ;)

If the crab dies before you get it cleaned or either cooked are they still eatable because I have been told they are poison if you try to eat them and I won't to Start try to catch Crabs to eat but don't want them to ruin on me
@Wino15
@Wino15 5 лет назад
G'day Brian, a bit like fish mate, it's best to shell the crab and remove the internal organs and gills from the crab's body if you're not going to cook it straight away. I wouldn't bother cooking a crab that has been sitting whole - on ice or otherwise - for more than 24hrs, as the gills & internal organs will start spoiling the meat fairly quickly. We generally cook them the same day they are caught by boiling them in salt water. The crabs go straight into a salt water ice slurry as soon as they're caught, which slows them down a fair bit (and stops the males from attacking each other, lopping legs & claws off..), and once cooked they are put on ice for 15-20mins. Important to look after your catch to maintain prime edibility. :)

Thanks so much so if I get them cleaned in a few hours of catching them they will be fine dead or alive correct? I hate to keep asking questions I just don't want to kill something if it's not gonna be eatable that is just the way I was raised but I have ate them before at a friend's house and they were good just want to make sure I got my ducks in a row before trying to do it because I don't want to mess it up
@Wino15
@Wino15 5 лет назад
All good Brian, that is correct mate! Provided you look after them from capture to plate, you will be all good. And very true, I don't kill anything I'm not going to eat or use as bait either. That is just irresponsible and senseless. Happy crabbing mate!

Usually 5-8mins, depending on whether they're around in numbers or not. The 'record' is a crab in the net in 8secs..
