"American but not by choice" That statement really captures a lot. The history of becoming a state was definitely not peaceful or by choice of the natives
Being NATIVE AMERICAN, I can totally relate to a lot of what they say about feeling torn. It’s really messed up how the American government thinks it’s ok to intrude and imprison people to get their way. The “American dream” is a joke.

I love the way you immersed yourself in the culture. I have visited Hawaii for the past two summers. I became intrigued with the history when I saw an upside down flag on a tour boat that I took with Native Hawaiian owners. I knew an upside flag means distress and so I didn’t ask but I began to read and discover the why. My second visit focused more on the Hawaiian people and the culture. The visit was absolutely amazing! The Hawaiian culture is so rich! It is absolutely amazing to witness the love and respect that Hawaiians have for the Ohana and the land. There is nothing like the Aloha spirit. One word….priceless. Keep using your platform to open the minds and heart of people. Mahalo!🌺🌺🌺

A lot of people wouldn't bat an eye if they saw certain signals nor would they ask the questions that you did. @@morganspencer3762 I must admit I fell in love with Hawaii. The history is so rich and the people are amazing. I am so impressed with their respect for the land. I was on the beach in front of The Royal Hawaiian when I saw a native Hawaiian pick up the trash from others. He is an example of how much Hawaiian people respect the land. I can’t begin to explain all the beautiful experiences I had while visiting Hawaii. I returned to the mainland but Hawaii will forever remain in my heart. I surely wish that the spirit of Aloha could exist everywhere. A lot of us are Americans but not by choice. It’s crazy how we are connected through trauma. As a black woman, I know nothing of my ancestors and culture other than slavery. Anything further than that is lost unless I do extensive DNA testing to pinpoint ancestry. I love how their culture is not completely lost, I’m slightly jealous, but it’s beautiful to see them holding tight to who they are.

Our culture and language ripped from us but black people got it worst because of the reason you explained. You lost everything but more importantly your genealogy you don’t know where you’re from. @@vp3970 it is a shame that so much persecution has happened to the indigenous peoples. I admire the natives of Hawaii for not letting them steal away the genealogy and culture and completely stamp it out. It’s hard to not know where you’re from, but it’s not impossible to find the answers. Just a little more work than most and I’m willing to put it in. Thank you for your kind words
It's super important for us to preserve what we can in our geographical location, because our gene pool is so tiny on a worldwide scale, one day all that will be left is the culture... when I think of futuristic fiction, they always have both African and Caucasian people depicted in space exploration, so it makes me imagine our native faces will become so blended in the gene pools more vast and varied.. and although we may be Polynesian, the history of Hawaiʻi's place in Pacific legends and history is extremely important to preserve in more than just text books and internet so our values will live on. Aloha is a true concept of unconditional love on a societal scale, which is a way of living that's become a stark contrast to American lifestyles.
i was born & raised in hawaii, but unfortunately moved to the mainland when i was 11. seeing these videos fills my heart with joy & takes me back to my culture. keep up the great work! 🤍
I was kinda surprised Lilo and Stitch wasnt brought up as a reference media and would’ve liked to hear what they thought of it. I don’t really associate Moana with Hawaii specifically since it relates more to Polynesia in general.
The Hawaiian Language is so beautiful! My tribal language was officially extinct, but we have not given up and there is a huge boom in the people bringing it back, theres even apps and classes for anyone who wants to partake. actually both of my tribes are keeping the languages alive.
One good thing about the digital age. Recording our extincted languages that one day we can revived. Universities & languages experts went above & beyound here in Australia to record every word of our local native languages & tribal dialects much as possible because it is critically endangered, all official backups are in long-term government storage at our national libraries & other places.

This resonates heavy with me. All my Ohana was born raised Hawai’i. My parents got displaced for work and i grew up mainland. Til this day i feel out of place. My roots and culture is Hawaiian, but living in LA. Yah i live LA but my home and heart is Hawai’i. Mahalo for bringing awareness to our culture and shedding the light on wrongs ignorant tourists do
It's Oct 2022 and lots of local maui families struggle to live here. Alot of stars, oprah, and Jeff bezos bought land and or live here driving prices sky high! I was raised on maui and took hawaiian language courses and markian gets an awesome crash course in 3 days. So lucky! Nice to see his love and humility
Unfortunately what you're experience has been happening across much of America, maybe not in the same exact way, but the next step after rich people just buying up chunks of a limited resource is the real estate investors, ones that buy because they know they can ask a lot of money for it whether they resell or rent. Unfortunately local governments have made zero move to try and prevent that sort of pricing out. Now I've been blessed that I'm old enough that I grew up in a time before all of that and was wise enough to actually buy a house when the "middle class" could do that sort of thing, but even so the value of my "$80,000" home is now well over $1.5M even though it is the same house is just disgusting in a way.

Great video, I have lived on Oahu for 2 years. I learned more watching this than I have in those 2 years. Whata wonderful gift to experience everything you did! My experience has been very unique. I moved here because my stepdaughter is stationed here in the Airforce. But I'm on a true adventure. Now I live completely off grid, on the side of Kunia Ridge. I want to leave no mark, but help where I can. I was able to find a beautiful small piece of land, with a fabulous view. Where I can grow food. All while also helping a family out. It's amazing to be here and learn the culture. Aloha

My first memory when I was a child or encounter on the Hawaiin culture was through Disney's Lilo and Stitch , I learned a bit about it and fell in love, but now growing up and getting to watch these videos on this rich amazing culture I feel Hawaii is far more important and great than what I imagined and learned. I am from Lebanon Middle East, very far away yet I feel very connected to this culture because we share similar values in a way and traditions especially the importance of family and caring for one another. Thank you for sharing your lovely culture with us and thanks for this video

I want to say I’m so glad you came to Hawai’i Island and spent time in Hilo town with a born and raised Hawaiian family. You got to see the TRUE Hawai’i. I am born and raised in Kona (on the other side of Hawai’i Island) but I have Hilo as a special place in my heart because I had to live there for 4 years to study for my Bachelor’s Degree at UH Hilo. I also had Lito as a Professor at UH Hilo my senior year, and in Zoology too! That was 6 years ago and he’s still in the same classroom! So crazy! He’s honestly the best. His class is definitely taught the Hawaiian way ❤
...look up Gavin Menzies books 1434 and others which discussed this in detail and proves that the prehistoric Alaskan land bridge was not the only source of Asian DNA and cultural influence ( like silk making, terraced land agriculture, cultivation of rice, etc.)
I'm from the Big Island. My dad would say that all the time, "You gotta learn fo Love'um anyway." 4:50. I have been away from home for 24 years, but Aloha was always a part of my life. I think a true understanding of what Aloha is was an important take away for you. I don't think it would be possible for a Hawaiian to forget what Aloha is or how it feels in their heart. I love this video... One of the best things about us humans is our differences, especially in cultures.. Side note...I'm from a Caribbean island called Barbados and one of the words used for the female genital is "pokey" So I cackled so hard when he said pokey instead of poke'. 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣But it goes to show how words can mean different things in different countries and cultures .🙌

I would like to know how these people have survived the recent tragedy in Maui. I have given 1/2 my income yet I feel it isn’t enough and I e never been to Hawaii. My dream was to go there and learn the culture but now I’m afraid that culture is really in danger and the time to go is now ; although I don’t want to be disrespectful whatsoever!! As an adoptee from South America (to Scandinavia), I find it interesting to present the subject with "I was adopted into (...) family for (...) hours". From perspective as an adoptee, who lost my cultural heritage as I was removed from my country, but also my people as I (and many other adoptees from same area) descend from native people from that part of the American continent, its interesting to see through these videos how the word "adoption" is interpreted/could be experienced. Also considering this and the videos about North American natives and afro-american people who was/is also forcefully adopted into "white" families, how one still talks lightly around the subject of "adoption". So what I find interesting by presenting the videos this way is how in these videos/situations, adoptions was a choice made on own accord, while so many others have been silenced and just had to live and "put" up with adoption. Kind of "put up with" losing ones cultural self, family history and belonging amongst others who look more alike. I've truly enjoyed these videos, and I guess my trauma from living though transracial adoption, is only a thought on the side which will haunt me forever. Again, Ive truly enjoyed learning more of native Hawaiian culture, as I am searching for knowledge of the history of oppressed people and cultures under colonial rule. This has been an interesting series.
