Advanced Riding - what is it & why bother?

Having recently passed my IAM Advanced Riding test I talk about why after writing off my 125 I decided to take some further training. What it is, what's involved and how the typical stereotype of "advanced drivers/riders" was nothing like my own personal experience.
I mention the basics of what I learnt - the 4 S
Safe
Systematic
Smooth
Speed
and how the training has given me more confidence, increased my safety margins, made me get so much more out of my riding and (what might sound surprising but) also a faster rider!

Good advice, I passed my mod 2 a couple weeks ago and just had my first weeks riding on my first bike. Lots to learn and will definitely take my advanced course later in the year. Stay safe

Yep. Passed my DAS in October, bought my unrestricted bike in January, starting my IAM in April.

Really enjoyed watching this, very informative and encouraging. Passed my full bike test just under a year ago at age 59 and have been thinking of taking an IAM course, I really love motorcycling and want to get the best out of it and stay safe. I feel that watching this video has now spurred me on to enquire about the advance training course. Many thanks I'll look forward to more videos.☺ John H

Wow! Thanks so much for your kind words - that was exactly what I hoped to achieve. To make it sound fun and not stereotypical. If you join a group that you gel with and get the right Observer you will love it and it will take your riding to a different level and you will get so much more out of your bike and your riding enjoyment.

Not an advanced rider having ridden for 50 years. Do I think I know it all ! not at all still learning but just cannot be bothered to go through advance process. Your also right sadly I know of an advanced rider who got killed so it can happen to anyone.

Hi Ted. I'm not one to say that people MUST do things and it's not a route for everyone, but I really enjoyed the whole advanced process. As I said I had the "right" type of Observer (teacher) for me. We gelled and she had a very sensible common sense approach to things. I wouldn't get bollocked for straying over the speed limit by a few mph for example. Also I really enjoyed the social side. I got to meet a lot of like minded people and we go social riding together. For me it's brilliant, however get the wrong group of "advanced" riders who are all letter of the law and techy and it would be miserable!!! Thanks for watching.

Very well put. I know there are so many types of riders etc but the key is being a Safe rider rather than being a Lucky rider who "Got away with it"!

Too true. Let's be honest we all reply on being "lucky" at times and I've certainly had my fair share of things that, on reflection, were a bit silly. If we can do things to increase our safety margin it means we don't have to be "as lucky"

Very informative video, thank you, however did you realise at 4 mins you overtook the lead vehicle at a pedestrian crossing. Sorry for being critical but this is a video from an advanced rider.

Yes, good spot. I'm the first to admit that I make mistakes and while I always try to ride to an advanced standard I don't always manage it, especially in central London.

Anyone else notice that old man perving at the hot girl crossing the road at about 2:50
