After a 2 year refit - we're sailing home!
And so just like that, we were anchored back to where it all began, outside Vuda Marina. For those of you that don’t know us, we’ve just spent the last 2 years in Fiji, refitting our ex Vendee Gobe Open 60, turning her into a fast family cruiser. And a large part of that refit took place here on the hard stand in this marina.
Watch from the beginning here • Can we turn an Open 66... - but please forgive our rather amateur first few videos!
Cyclone season is drawing to a close here in Fiji, the days are getting shorter, the temperature is dropping and there’s a hint of fresh easterly trades in the air…
These were all signs that our days on these shores were numbered and it was time to start to prepare the crew and the ship for the long passages ahead.It was especially important that all crew were appropriately trained for the upcoming voyage.
But where were we headed?
We’ve been discussing the route and our future plans for sometime now but recently we’ve made the decision to leave the Pacific and the opportunities we’ve been offered here. It hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but after being away from home so long, the most important thing for us right now is to go back and spend some quality time with our loved ones. So we will be pointing our bow in the direction west and then northwest towards to Mediterranean and home, starting with Vanuatu next month.
Making this decision is just the first of many challenges ahead…
In this video we collect our headsails from the sailmaker, replace our battery switches and anchor winch circuit breaker.

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

Haha, another fun episode and you always bring a smile to my face. So happy to hear that you're at the point you can head home for a spell to be with family which is almost always a good thing. The new microphones will be nice but honestly I've found your audio to always be fine as anyone watching a sailing channel should expect some wind noise as just something pretty much unavoidable. Also good to see that your sails are now done and ready to power that monster of a yacht to some unattainable speeds for most so called "Cruising Vessels" that are nothing more than floating condos. She's definitely built to fly and I for one can't wait to see you making some real time as she eats up the miles under some real power on your journey home. A long road to get to this point and you've definitely earned it as two years is a long time but I bet it's felt like it's flown by now that you're looking back on it. There was a lot of blood, sweat and tears that went into this refit but I bet it was worth it to get to where you are now with the overall state of things ready to set off. I wish you and your's nothing but the best. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

Heyhey thanks so much for the lovely message - it's so nice to read! And you are very right, it feels so good to be so close to being fully ready after the hot sweaty hears on the hard - fingers crossed for some smooth champagne sailing to get us home :)

I have seen awful treatment by Egypt of cruisers. It is dangerous for you to go there. Especially if you do not have the resources to pay the corrupt officials bribes. You could loose your boat. Another sailing channel has sailed around the world and the most trouble was in Egypt.

Hey Ben - is this Zatara? We need to watch that video to understand better. Yes we don't want to put ourselves at risk, but plenty of boats do go up the Sewers so perhaps there's a way to do it and not stay so long that makes it a bit easier
@jameskiehm546
@jameskiehm546 Год назад
It’s Zatara. They basically felt harassed because Egypt hasn’t figured out how to deal with people moving freely in the country. I believe it was last week’s episode. They were safely in the Med and felt comfortable speaking up at that point. It sounded like 3 organizations were harassing them every day for the same paperwork and referenced the movie Ground Hog Day. So best to avoid the country for now.

Have a great trip, I have done the Thailand to 5he med a few times , sadly Aden is off limits , recommend a good fuel cleaning system , lots of motoring . Very jealous what a way to go home .
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
Hey David wow very interesting - did you go up the sewers at all? Yes the motoring part isn't going to be ideal of us... we do still manage to sail in very light winds so fingers crossed it's not too dead calm

Whats the weather like outside sumatra instead of the inside with alot of motoring ? Up the western side , 1200 miles up to Sri Lanka. Or a huge hop to Seychelles. Exciting

Love your plan to sail back to Italy and see family. Solo is a great fellow, good you plan to bring him along too. When reviewing electrical sytems a thermal camera is useful to identify hotspots, perhaps you can borrow one. How is your mainsail search going? Will you have enough (built in) fuel tankage to cross the calm sections of your voyage, make water and live?
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
Heyhey great to hear from you :) Haha funny you should mention about the thermal camera! We've recently acquired a very special kind of rugged thermal camera which we'll be showing in the upcoming videos! No luck with the mainsail yet. We don't have loads of space for fuel, but we are able to move in very light winds, but it is something we'll have to consider carefully when making certain passages (and take lots of jerry cans!). We're still battling with the watermaker - update coming soon, but yes we will need this functioning to be able to set off...

Seeing "Goodnight Moon" on your bookshelf brought back fond memories of when our two girls were Nemo's age. It was one of the books we read to them every night. When you get to Italy in 2024, Jo will be close to having completed a circumnavigation of the globe, won't she?
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
Yeah nemo really likes that book, even though half the items in it I don’t know how to explain (the telephone, mittens, bowl of mush haha). Yeah we’ll both have pretty much completed a circumnavigation when we get home. I (Jo) set sail from Germany tho but timo set sail from the med.

Having such a deep keel is a danger from the perspective of safety, you cannot get into numerous safe harbors around the world when storms are incoming. Even when doing regular travel you will be barred from many harbors thus will be stuck in very uncomfortable anchorages. If this were me doing the refit, one of the first things I would have changed is the keel depth via a lifting system to raise it like a dagger board along with shortening the depth and adding weight to the bulb for offset. I never understood watching the past 2 years why this wasn't one of the first priorities you tackled during the refit.
@SailingNV
@SailingNV Год назад
first reason is that the displacement can't support more weight, the second reason is economic - we're not in a financial position to tackle this at the moment and third reason is for making a dagger board we need to sacrifice a lot of space in the interior and we don't really have spare space. We bought the boat like this because we were comfortable to have the boat like this and in the case of a storm we are feeling more safe to stay on the ocean
