Will they confiscate our boat?
Fiji will forever be the place that shaped our future. It’s here, in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, that our story began. Here amongst the rugged landscapes, palm trees and turquoise clear water, we hauled out our ex vendee globe open 60 to embark upon what was to become the biggest project of our lives. Our dream was to convert her into a fast family cruiser to take us half way around the world back to the Mediterranean and our homes. It was here in Fiji that during that time our son was born and where we adopted our furry son... And yet with no prior warning, our tropical paradise was abruptly turned into a thunderous nightmare as our boat and all that we had worked for was suddenly at risk of being taken from us...
Fiji is made up of more than 300 islands and home to close to 1 million people. Whilst the majority of people live on Fiji’s two main islands, as cruisers, we’re lucky enough to be able to visit the outer islands and before embarking on our final passage preparations, we took the time to pay one last visit to the village of yalobi, in the south of Waya in the Yasawa island group on the western side.
It’s customary in Fiji, when arriving at one of the outer islands, to present kava to the village chief. Kava is a root which is ground to powder, and mixed with water to make a midly narcotic drink, which is popular amongst south pacific islanders.
Island life is peaceful and most villages are pretty much self sufficient, growing and fishing almost everything they eat - only buying a few extras from the mainland such as sugar, soap and occasionally flour. Their diet is mostly from root vegetables, cassava and yams, coconuts, fruits and veggies plus the fish they catch and wild boars they hunt.
Most villages in the outer lying islands are strong christians with the church being a prominent part of their lives.
But the ocean was calling, so it was time for the final preparations to get ready to clear out of the country.
Preparing for ocean passages is always a big operation - but after our 2 year refit, we still had some last minute finishing touches to do to ensure a smooth ride ahead. These last few weeks leading up to the departure were pretty action packed - we replaced batteries and added a generator to the boat inventory to prevent further power issues, repainted our cockpit (the thin layer of nonskid we’d crammed into the end of the refit was already wearing thin). With a toddler and dog onboard, we divided the cockpit up into 2 sections to do this, cordoning off the freshly painted section with netting each time to try to reduce the likelihood of little feet or paws finding their way onto the fresh paint.
Plus safety check, rig check, filling the boat up with food fuel and water...
And finally we were ready, just one more sleep, and it would be time to clear out in the morning and get out of the marina with the high tide around 9am
… or so we thought...

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

As an Italian that learned English mostly travelling around the world I laugh so much listening how Timo pronounces the English language, pretty much the same as most of us Italians... 😄 Luckily you are now able to clear without paying that very expensive fee, I wish you all the good luck that you can have, stay safe!

The original Jack Sparrow! Nice to see some real people, and they don’t come much more “real” than you guys. Very wholesome watching your journey. Good luck to all your endeavours, we happily will follow your progress! One question… do you get favorable treatment re berthing fees etc as you are a more “unique” yacht compared to the average visitor. I shudder at the thought of such fees mounting up for such a big vessel (especially as many haven options are excluded because of your draught!)

Grateful to know y'all came through ok. It would seem that a country so dependent on tourism/tourist revenue might take better care with their policies re same. Without Prejudice @Evin whiteson After reading your comment. The best advice is: 1. Instruct a Lawyer in the USA 2. Seek the Help Of Your Local Congressman in your home Nation. In addition, under International Law, you cannot be refused Access to A Port if you can demonstrate need. Of course, you may write on a WITHOUT PREJUDICE BASIS to The Authorities viz. Indonesian President, and or, Custom's, advising that on foot of their Request you have left their Jurisdiction on whatever date , and, request that they acknowledge your Departure, And, that you politely request the Indonesian President, Customs, and or, Police lift their International Notice which has and or continues to interfere with your Lawful Right's under International Law to seek Safe Haven INTERNATIONALLY. Yes, the above requires a series of typed copied letters, which you also keep copies on file along with proof of sending. And, you can appoint either a Family member or a Lawyer to act on your behalf as your Personal Representative while you remain stranded, as you state, at Sea or Ocean. Of course, the above would change if you are a Convicted Criminal, and, this is why you need to secure a Lawyer to Act for you. But, as a Sailor, you are entitled to A Safe Haven.

Without Prejudice Jo The sound of you hitting the keys on your keyboard demonstrates a certain upset, annoyance, or, anger. Looking at the most likely reasons why Customs had raised a $50,000 Tax bill, and, how you probably differed from the other Yacht's which you were comparing yourself : Firstly, you Purchased your Yacht in Fiji. In your Yacht Purchase Agreement Price were Taxes included or excluded? Second, you were taking Timo away from Fiji after his long residence in Fiji. Fiji probably thought it had kept Timo Alive living off Fiji. Third, you gave birth to Nimo. The Fiji Hospital was probably a Public Hospital supported by Taxes. In your own country, the nhs Hospital is possibly free to you. But, Fiji Doctor's, Nurse's, Hospital are normally Paid by Foreigners. Added to which, after Two Years Of The Deadly Infectious CORONA VIRUSES VARIANTS, with Severe FINANCIAL Pressure on The Fiji Hospital's, with ALL additional Expense for Fiji. The Fiji Hospital Possibly returned notice of the Birth Of Your son Nimo to The Fiji Government, And, they probably did a Cost comparison with The United States Of America where you would not get much, if any, change from $50,000 for a Birth in Hospital. Really, i think you are being unfair to Fiji, they permitted you to Stay in Fiji at a Time Of International Crisis. Fiji helped with the Birth Of Nimo. After reading your replies to various Commentator's, i Believe, you are being shortsighted. Remember, Nimo will Always have a Fijian Passport. Which, will probably result in his travels to Fiji at various times. Overall, you bought a boat; you got a husband; and, you have a Healthy Son. What more could you ask? Here i Challenge you...Think back to your Life before arriving in Fiji! Ask yourself would you swop back, Or, are you happier with a husband + son ? Frankly, as your life is now connected through Nimo to Fiji, you should ensure you refrain from bad mouthing Fiji. Why? The Answer's should be Evident! In addition, your upset, may result in Fiji reacting to People Subsequently in a less favourable way. Overall, i Believe, you have done pretty well for yourself. Now, remember Nimo Future. Fiji have a INTERNATIONAL Rugby Team.

Hi there, interesting comment. A few corrections... we bought the boat in NZ, but did spend a lot of money in Fiji for the refit and had tried to promote Fiji as a place where this kind of refit can be done. Fiji will always hold a special place in our hearts as I thought we tried to make clear by the ending in the video. So there is no real anger behind my keyboard typing. We were genuinely pretty frightened for the 24 hours we had to wait to understand what was going on and it was a big shock. But we lived to tell the tale and as we said in the video, we still love Fiji! We have many good friends there and hope to go back one day :)

I have heard of so many horror stories of cruisers experiencing made up fees and rules and being extorted. I incorporated some special designs into my boat I am currently building so If can get out of town in a hurry. I wonder how many 60'-70' sailing catamarans have a pair of 1500hp General electric T58 turbines installed in then hulls. Iam hoping for a top speed of at least 60kts to get away from most other boats. If all else fails I have built a couple very concealed hiding spaces strategically places around the boat for firearms. If I can't outrun pirates I will shoot my way out as a last resort.
