I'm letting you guys take a peek at my process while I roast 4+ pounds of 3 different coffees; an Ethiopia, Colombia, and Haiti are on the schedule and if you stick around, I'll even brew up some of that fresh Ethiopia to show you guys my reaction to it going right from roast to a brew.

Thanks so much for the Roast-Along! I really appreciate it. I'm starting my own small roasting business with the Aillio Bullet in the coming months so it's extremely helpful to see others working with it as well. Becoming familiar with the workflow and set-up needed is so helpful. Well made video :) Thanks!

Glad you found it useful! In the next month or so, I plan to make a more detailed video streamlining just one roast's process and make clear some fundamentals to guide a roast. I'm currently editing a video you may find useful too. It's actually about starting a business with particular regard to being a farmers market vendor (my experience this year). The current version is an hour-long chat filled to the brim with info. Should be available in a couple days.

this was a big help. I found it just at the right time ordering my bullet tomorrow. I believe I’m on a Facebook home Roaster group that you’re on as well David great content. I’m working on getting my small homeroasting business off the ground here in northeast PA. Thanks so much for doing this.

Thanks! Yes, the bullet's entirely worth the money. I definitely recommend it if it's in the budget and you can benefit from it's strengths and you want a very capable machine that isn't gas powered. Thanks for watching!

Hey David! I Just found and subscribed to your channel. Im intrigued by your content very helpful. I'm a novice and just starting out. I have an ikawa home roaster machine I just purchased that was in my budget. It can roast 100g of green beens at a time. Being new to home roasting, in your opinion, where would I start in green beans ie: being from who, what, and where? Again I'm new to this and appreciate your feedback. I'll be watching and thanks for the content.

Brazil would be a great start. Find a simple washed Brazil and aim for a medium. I don’t know how much control ikawa gives you, but outside of color, weight loss is an indicator of roast level (relative to that bean). We shed about 14.5% of the weight off of our natural process Brazil. You can shoot for anywhere between 14-16% loss to start. Guatemala is another relatively easy origin to nail. Look for mid to low altitude with little to no complexity. 800-1500 meters with nutty or chocolatey expectations.

Hey David! Just about to pick up a bullet this weekend. What are you doing for venting? I saw you mentioned in another comment that just the 3d printed cover and vent didn't work, what will you be trying out?
@davidsargentcoffee
@davidsargentcoffee Год назад
You picked the perfect time to ask. The 3D printed adapter melted because the fan I was using for exhaust was underpowered. I was previously using the AC infinity Raxial S4. I upgraded literally yesterday to the AC infinity Cloudline T4. It's about 200cfm, so nearly double the volume of air pulled, but it also creates a much better seal so I'm actually running it at about 30% power and getting much better results now.
@franzconstancio1127
@franzconstancio1127 Год назад
This is a great video. Did you 3d print the adapter for the exhaust tubing in the back?
@davidsargentcoffee
@davidsargentcoffee Год назад
Hey thanks! Nope, I bought the adapter from a seller on Etsy. If you search on Etsy it's pretty much the only option that shows up and I'd buy it again. Shipped quickly, and the seller was polite when I communicated with him.

Do you find that you get a lot of smoke off the cooling tray indoors?
@davidsargentcoffee
@davidsargentcoffee 5 месяцев назад
You can! Dark roasts can be problematic indoors just off the cooling tray alone. I had multiple fans running in my house to disperse it quickly, but I recommend checking out Etsy. You can find 3D printed attachments including an exhaust adapter for the cooling tray too, but usually the amount of smoke created by anything lighter than true dark roasts was non-consequential.

Hey Im roasting on this machine aswell! What is your charge temp on your Ethiopian?
@davidsargentcoffee
@davidsargentcoffee Год назад
For 800 grams (my typical batch size) I'm usually charging a little lower than most for a lighter Ethiopian. I'm not home to check my actual profile at the moment but I want to say my charge temp is about 165-170°c.

Hey Dave, thanks for the video--that's a lot of smoke! ;) Would you be willing to post pic(s) of your profile snapshots?
@davidsargentcoffee
@davidsargentcoffee Год назад
Yep, I totally can, though most of the profiles I use are downloaded from Roast World without much modification so it would mostly be me showing the profiles I've downloaded. I also realize I made a mistake for which fan to buy - it's not quite powerful enough to pull everything out and create a true vacuum, so the lingering heat has melted my exhaust adapter so smoke tends to be problematic at higher temps. Fixing that soon! And I'll be doing another roast video soon going into more detail about which profiles I use and why so I'll show those then. Thanks!

Please allow me to apologize. This was earlier on in my channel history and editing this footage was new to me then. If I could go back, I would certainly give more care to a more balanced lighting and color profile. Thank you for watching and I hope you can find something of value and I appreciate your feedback.
