This video features four different Conair Air Tractor AT-802 Fire Boss waterbombers in action fighting the Sitkum Creek / Duhamel Creek forest fire just outside of Nelson, British Columbia. This has been one of the earliest fire seasons in British Columbia, with wildfires raging across the province. It was quite the impressive sight to see these amphibious air tankers in action scooping up water from Kootenay Lake.
You can also see an Air Spray Lockheed L-188 Electra performing a retardant drop on the fire and a Conair Convair CV580 tanker in the distance.
It was great to see all these impressive turboprop aerial firefighting water bomber aircraft in action, especially getting the close-up views of the Fire Boss seaplanes filling up their tanks. We are very thankful here in the Kootenays for all the hard work put in by the forest fire fighters across the province.

There are currently 8 of these AT-802 water skimmers fighting a fire near Penticton BC. Also, 3 Conair Convair 580s. I don't know what we would do without those guys. We are trully grateful for their hard work and bravery.

I worked for Leland Snow at Air Tractor back in the 80's, the man was a very savvy aeronautical engineer. I once asked him what was the air foil section used on the Air Tractor's wings, Snow replied one that was developed in the 30's, I then asked, why didn't you use a newer Air foil section, Leland replied, because the older one works best lol

There is just some poetic beauty in those prop driven seaplanes, all this high tech everywhere and here you have something almost from the beginnings of aeronautics. Big wings, powerful engine that sound send a chill through your spine, the fell of power that those machines give. They and pilots deserve the highest respect for their job, thank you for shearing this vid with use. Really excellent work!

Cal Fire will not allow them to be used in CA. In sustained winds of 25 knots or more AT Fire Boss's can become unstable especially when full of water. They hold 800 gallons which is 300 gallons more than a standard fire engine. When you watch them lift off after uptake they climb very gingerly clawing for speed. AT's are great, safe planes but like any aircraft they have limitations. The vast majority of smaller aircraft are in this same category.

How does the water get forward into the largest part of the float chamber? Is there a baffle inside forcing it forward?
@kevinmoore4887
@kevinmoore4887 6 лет назад
They use speed to ram water up into the central "crop dusting" tank. I am pretty sure the floats are not used for water storage.
@benpurcell72
@benpurcell72 5 лет назад
There are two variants of this aircraft used for firefighting. The terrestrial version relies solely on the fuselage tank, but this amphibious version does indeed store fluid in the skids. The manufacturer's literature says scooping can only get water into these skids, and not the central tank.
@blackhatter011
@blackhatter011 5 лет назад
No it does not. Why do people who know jack shit feel they have to comment. What Ken Moore said above is correct. There water is picked up via an intake and stored in the belly tank.
@james082459
@james082459 9 лет назад
Silly question, here. Can they take on more water without stopping? And if they do exactly how and where do they take it on at? Ok two silly questions! Nice video, again.
@TheHDAviation
@TheHDAviation 9 лет назад
James Cusson That's a good question. I think (though I'm not 100% sure) that the Fire Boss's only pick up while moving. I think they basically rely on the movement of the aircraft to force the water into the tanks.

anyone care to explain how this works? does it scoop the water into the floats?
@icedcoffee4182
@icedcoffee4182 Год назад
The floats are just for keeping the aircraft above the water. The floats have scoops that come down and the airplane uses the ram effect to jet water into the hopper through plumbing which is between the cockpit and the engine. That hopper is 800 gallons in volume.

This video is kind of boring as it only shows how it picks up water yet explains nothing. I am ready to move on to a video that explains how many planes are involved and his many passes are made, how many gallons of water the aircraft can carry to the forest fire...Something after the third pass to get water was more than enough. How fast is the plane going when it enters the water and how fast must the plane be traveling while loading water. I hope this next segment titled FireBoss Water Scooper explains at least some of my questions. If it does not, I will be done with watching these fire planes!!! Thank-you
