For pre and post shading, I like to think about what angle the simulated light would be coming from and spray either against the "light" for pre shading or with the "light" for post shading. That tends to help make sure the shadows look as natural as possible.

For priming or base coats, I find it speeds things up to use a dedicated airbrush. I have an Iwata pistol grip that gets a moderately wide spread and super even coverage. I've found it will cover an area in about 1/3 the time, and get a more even coat.
