Akai MPK Mini Pad Sensitivity Hack [SWAT]

Do you own an Akai MPK Mini and don't think your pads are sensitive enough? Do you like looking at the insides of awesome devices? (You dirty pervert) If you said YES to either of those, then this video is for YOU!
In this episode of SWAT, we take apart the Akai MPK Pro Mini and increase the pad sensitivity for FREE...well pretty much anyway.
The whole process takes about an hour and only requires some pliers for removing the knobs, a small (#1) screwdriver to open it up, some electrical tape for padding the pads, and some scissors for cutting the tape.
Some people used three strips of tape, some two, but we found that those caused problems. It made it too sensitive and all the pads lit up without even touching it. So, we just use one strip per side of the pad.
This process WILL void your warranty, so do at your own risk and with the supervision of an adult, even a child-like adult. And if you think you're an adult, don't act like a child and complain for screwing up your Akai...we did it several times and ours is just fine.

Just did this on an Akai MPKmini MK3. Works great... two layers of tape in my case. First try didn't work on a single pad, but after re-applying the tape, two layers proved being the sweet spot to me.

I just did it and it works great! I had to adjust how tight i put the screws in though to get it just right, as one of the pads was sticking, but after 3 tries and 1.5 hours it's perfect. Thanks for the vid man!

I got a used Axiom pro 61 with unresponsive pads. Only 1 pad works and the others are completely dead. I opened it up and saw no oxidation, but just a little tear on the strip that connects to the circuit board. Is there a fix?

If you hold down the Full Level button for five seconds, the small screen will show four velocity settings (v1, v2, v3, v4). Use the top four knobs to adjust the velocity level of the keys. Best to take a photo of the original levels before changing them, just in case you want to revert it to original levels

Yup, Tape thicknesses vary. Stretching the tape will make it thinner. There could be manufacturing tolerance differences sa well. Two worked for me, one layer wasn't enough.

I don't get why akai don't fix this issue brefore releasing new products. I had to do this same hack on my mpd32 years ago but it seems they're still building their controllers with the same problem.
@kevinr.3542
@kevinr.3542 4 года назад
It's debatable. I got used to the sensitivity. But I usually leave it on full volume mode because the pads weren't great at detecting the different levels of pressure in a consistent way. I found It was easier to just edit those volume changes in a DAW. But as for the overall sensitivity, it's not like you have to hit them THAT hard to trigger the sample. I quickly adapted.

I need to replace the pads in my Akai MPK Mini 2. However, the sustain connector makes it almost impossible to remove the board out of the enclosure. Anyone know how this is done. The original Akai MPK 1 doesn't seem to have this issue.

I'm having the same problem. Have you found a solution yet?
@sebastianaberg3951
@sebastianaberg3951 2 года назад
@@ashleydavis2921 I had this issue with my mini 3 which I believe has about the same configuration. In my case there was a few things that helped me get it out of the enclosure. First, there’s a screw beneath the cable connecting the joystick with the main circuit board, very easy to miss. Second, there are two black pins connecting the display to the circuit, and for some reason it helped pinching these together carefully while wiggling the circuit board out of the case. Remember that the joystick still will be stuck to the case, and therefore the circuit board will too. It’s possible to get the pads out anyway as long as you’re careful. I hope I’m correct believing the mk2 and mk3 is roughly the same so this can help you, hehe… (also, I’m a complete layman, so do anything I’ve told you on your own risk) cheers

I just got a MPX16 to play back sound bytes and discovered that the volume they play them back at was dependent on how hard I press the pad, which to me is stupid. They should have put an on/off switch or a sensitivity adjustment setting somewhere for the 99% of people who could do with out it. I guess Akai is stuck on stupid though, do I really have to open it up and put tape on the pads or would a midi controller work?
@ashtonscott412
@ashtonscott412 7 лет назад
um, akai does this on all their pad products. the velocity controls make everything sound real. a drum set doesn't have the same volume for every hit. if you absolutely want everything the same velocity, just turn on full levels

@8bitdigitaltv
@8bitdigitaltv 10 лет назад
Hmm...that doesn't sound good. You have to be REALLY careful with that stuff. If it was just plastic, you might be able to glue the plastic back on. If it's metal, you may be able to solder it. If it's the board, then yeah, it's probably a goner.

both sides, but only one piece of tape in thickness. different models and tapes vary though, so you'll have to see for yourself what works. any more than one layer of thickness and it lit up on its own or when touching anywhere near the pad (including tapping adjacent pads).

@wadegruber2119
@wadegruber2119 6 лет назад
Yes, it is necessary with the MKII. I ran into that with the sustain jack as well, but managed to get it off and back on several times. You just have to unscrew the little joystick board, then bend the case outward and force the sustain jack through, then you can push the knob shafts down through, and do those steps in reverse when reassembling. I found that 3 layers of tape are needed for the MKII.

i've made it too! imgur.com/a/VQ4yl imgur.com/a/RR1yd I needed to pull a lot... fearing to break the plastic but somehow i managed to do it. I "pulled in" the sustain first of all, then raised the board with the knobs etcetera. Obviously you have to unscrew the joystick pad or the main board will never come out. I've used the tape hack (here the guide for the previous model of Akai Mpk mini > ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qd90x1Gcf6Y.html). Now is a lot more sensitive, it's nearly a piezo mic. I'm very happy with this!

Hey @@AvioCritical I have an MPK mini Limited Edition White. But I've got the same problem with the sustain. I did manage to open it up even though it was difficult (and scary). Now closing it is my new challenge. I feel like I need more than two hands. Two to pull the plastic around the whole for the sustain input. A few hands to keep everything in place and maybe a hand or two to push the plastic down where all the knobs needs to go.. How did you do it?? :D
