Recording of Alan Gilbert's seminar: "Can conducting be taught?" - part of "Kirill Gerstein invites" hosted by Kronberg Academy. 22.06.2022 ‪@KronbergAcademy1993‬
This discussion takes teaching conducting as a starting point. Alan Gilbert then muses on what conducting itself is; answers many questions submitted by the live seminar participants covering the practicalities of studying conducting and being a conductor; illustrates gesture and discusses its effect on the player/conductor interaction; speaks of the necessary cultural and musical horizon that needs to be brought to the podium; the seminar finishes with a general discourse on art and its importance in human society.
This week's seminar was kindly hosted by the ‪@brsorchestra‬ in their BRSO container in the Werksviertel in Munich - the site of the future concert hall of the orchestra.

(what a great talk! 🤩 thank to both of you!) I understand the question about "overconducting" in yet another interesting way: rather than "conducting with big gestures" or "micro-managing a lot of details", there also is a point understanding which kind of information the musician need to be given, and which other are superfluous. one ability which is really difficult to learn for young conductors is to "let the orchestra play", feeling what technical help they need to deliver their best, and what indications you want to give to shape the performance the way you want. in crude words - don't mess around as long as the orchestra is sounding spontaneously the way you wish...
