The lyrics of this song are legendary. Frustration, cynicism, bitterness, honesty... It takes guts to reveal your wounds like that. If you add the rock edge of the instruments and Alanis' powerful delivery, you get the magical recipe of one of the milestones of pop music.
The pain, the bitter anger, and the frustration of the singer are easily palpable. I get the distinct impression that much of the anger seems to be result of the man's casual ignorance of what he has done to her. The irony is that the man may be truly ignorant of what has taken place. The man may have no real memory of their actual relationship . The singer is unaware of this. It may be that the true villain is in fact the other woman which will be revealed to the singer much later and then even later to the man. Both the singer and the man may in fact be victims here. We learn the truth in time. It can take a long time though. It doesn't make it hurt less, maybe it hurts more. Of course, I could just be projecting personal experience onto someone else's story. I prefer my version though.
@@cmscms123456 She seems completely un-aware and/or un-able to recognize and admit HER **OWN** FAULT in what she refers to as this "MESS"... Because, after all, SHE IS THE ONE WHO HAND-PICKED HIM--HER ESPECIALLY "CHOSEN ONE"--instead of Selecting One of Many Available "Nice Guys", who many girls/women NOTORIOUSLY REJECT OR SIMPLY IGNORE, TO INSTEAD CHASE AFTER MEN OF DIS-HONORABLE AND REPUGNANT CHARACTER...only to later bitterly complain that such animals went on to use and wrong them in one way or another... Who's fault is that??? The girl/woman who rejected or ignored LITERALLY COUNT-LESS DECENT MEN OF GOOD CHARACTER???--OR THE ASS-HOLE, WHOM SHE HAND-PICKED AND FAWNED-OVER, WHO MADE LITTLE OR NO PRETENSE OF HIS SHADY CHARACTER, OBJECTIVES, AND GOALS???
@@cmscms123456 lmao how could u even blame her without knowing what he did to her, to create this masterpiece i bet ex mr morrisette monumentally effed up
@@janeonmeth9799 he groomed her as a teenager (she was a teen, he was in his 30s) manipulated her and influenced her development by sculpting her into what he wanted her to be. but then when she got too old he cheated on her with someone younger. it traumatized her and that’s what this song is about, that’s what dave coulier did to her - “it’s not fair to deny me of the cross i bear that you gave to me”
Ugh, I just love the raw anger and animosity in this song. It's not about heartache or sadness, it's about letting the MF'ers know that you will never let them forget how badly they hurt them. - For context, this song is about Morissette's relationship with Dave Coulier when she was 18 and he was 33. He (and older man & star at the time) took advantage of a younger, inexperienced person (who wasn't famous at the time), filled them up with promises, only to then dump her for someone else.
She loves her hell and blames everyone and their mama for it. Nothing new. Just anger. And anger is hate. and hate is evil. She's burning in the hell she has made home in her mind.
The strongest line for me is the “I’m not going to fade as soon as you close your eyes- and you know it”. Her absolute rage and total heartbreak there is so clear.
This is proof that the best art comes from real pain. So many stories of famous artists or musicians doing their best work when they were at a bad time in their lives.
I am sure she can now see what a jerk he was and didn’t deserve her anyway. Apparently he took her virginity and then dumped her. I always thought he seemed like a dork whenever I saw that stupid show he was on, and he was way too old for her. What a loser! I still love this song. Women need to express their rage sometimes! I had different reasons, but I really empathized with her when this song came out, and I really related to her anger the from first time I heard it.
What a ignerent guy, jeez like you go girl (: lol I'm sorry but you kicked ass in this song 🤩 !!! He just gave his wife away like what the heck dude:/ You deserve so much more than that babe! (: Smile , and be proud of yourself !! You kicked ass 😁
I am just now using this song as my therapy after a breakup. Yes.. legendary lyrics. When it first came out it was played everywhere and lost a little meaning to me. Now that it’s quiet I can make it all my own. God bless Alanis Morissette for writing this
Possibly the best song about getting dumped, certainly the most passionate. This song makes me remember the days when I used to watch MTV religiously, Haha..I was a little kid, probably just six or seven years old. Oh how I miss the nineties!
elvis presley Who the fuck are you!? The fact that I'm sitting here with a Led Zeppelin t-shirt on and a lifetime worth of LP's, CD's, Tapes, that I've collected from not only listening to and loving their music, but other great bands from the sixties and seventies; The 'Stones, Ten Years After, Steppenwolf, The Yardbirds, and oh yeah The Beatles...just because I'm younger than you and I like Alanis Morissette doesn't mean I don't appreciate good music. ASSHOLE
elvis presley not my argument but you talk about living in the past with an Elvis Presley screen name and talking about the Beatles and Led Zepp kettle and pot spring to mind, why did you attack the guys music choice If someone likes it, its their personal choice be nice, I personally hate Presley the Beatles and Led Zepp but I wouldn't give you static about it
EPIC bass riff! "And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it...well can you feel it?" Now _that's_ some great lyrics!
Yea its kinda cool when you can let some one else be pissed off for you. This album and Godsmacks first album do that for me. I feel so much better after hearing them rage.
"But you're still alive." is my favorite part. It logically fits in the structure but it also stands out and sounds vaguely threatening, which compliments the seething anger beautifully. Brilliant!
Brilliant! Cannot stress enough - regarding the great English tradition - preventing any possibility of exposing their greatest fear, any displays of embarrassment, dishonor, disobedience, etc… terminates this so-called “SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT” including ALL of its followers and and any of those who agree; however, they do not wish to include said previous, people in the mix!! They are not from this area and they are attempting to nap quietly and dream about different ways of infiltrating men.
If I ever broke anyone's heart, I'm so sorry and that was never my intention. For some reason, while listening to this great song I was moved to say these words.
It isn’t a mindless explicative like some music. It is placed there for emphasis to express and anger and pain. “Swear” words, used properly, convey a strong emotion. I believe some songs over saturate them and negate the emotion the artist tries to express.
Untill you experience betrayal from the one true love & loss That you felt to the core. .. You can't fully appreciate this , emotion , energy , valadation she sings here ! I felt this 100 % . Thank you 💝
A little late to this thread but here it is anyway. Disclaimer: not a chauvinist nor a Trump fan. Only having fun. In the now famous words of Mr Mulvaney: Get over it.
I also love Alanis Morrisette & her lyrics are off the chain FYI for my fellow Alanis fans it's ""OF THE CROSS I BEAR"" meaning the burden that he left her with or left her feeling- it's not the "CROSSED EYED BEAR " I"m a comment reader & I noticed that alot of the YOU OUTTA KNOW song lovers had the lyrics wrong 👍
Just everything. All this song (apart from the kids bit). Heartbroken and cheated on and left for another woman. Who is older. Who is a mess. And now I am a mess. Fucking marvellous.
My girl friend always plays this song. I actually love her whole album that came out in the mid 90s. I was like 3 when it came out so i dont remember it but that album is one of the best in the entire century to listen to
Naw, we don't think they're crazy .. but if you had the misfortune of having your heart ripped out and shat upon coincidentally in 1995 - this tune somehow has the effect of taking you a little too back there every time, lol..
Amy Deane If a man is happy with you, he never would have to cheat on you. There are always two people responsible for a relationship, and a breakup is always boths fault
@@JackOfen That's bullshit... I was a great girlfriend to him... I took damn good care of him.. He's nothing but a lair and a cheat... He's at full fault... That's how Narcissists play..
@@JackOfen It's never 50-50 exactly though, especially in romantic relationships because almost always one lover is more deeply in love than the other one, and it's s/he that suffers the most, especially if the lover who's not as deeply committed exploits the love their lover is blinded by. So yeah, it takes two to tango, but the blame is not shared equally for a failure.
I got married in my teens to a blond. She always put me in mind of Stevie Nicks during her Edge of Seventeen official music video... her appearance, her face, and her build. This song takes me back to those days. Alanis's "Theater" lyrics remind me of theaters and on my way to work in the mornings down an 8-mile stretch of highway. My wife would show the same "attention" and I could hardly keep my car on the road. One morning, I got pulled over and told the cop my car kept dying. It was a stick shift. All of that aside, I love this song. Alanis is a cutie and I love her songs!
Agreed. And I have to say, I am not all impressed by the number of men who take this way out...it is such a cop out!!! I have had married men who try to hit on me and it makes me fume: to think that a man thinks not only so little of his wife, but of you in asking...REALLY?!??!! If one woman isn't enough for you -- why the F**K do you have to go and piss off two!???!!
I remember the first time I heard this song on the radio... I shuddered and almost felt sorry for whatever guy she was singing about... I thought "he's in some SERIOUS TROUBLE!"
The fact that this was made exactly the day I was born is amazing. Whoever those who were involved in making this song is a legend and they always will be.
5 years after this comment was written, I have to say only about 5 artists have come out and, are actually great........ it's so sparsely scattered that, I'm definitely agreeing with this comment about the entire music industry as a whole..... every year of every decade has 1 or 2 artists that drop and kick some serious ass but, not like the 40 or 50 artists per year like the 90's was.
This song came on the radio tonight and how I whoop’d w laughter! I opened it here to read the lyrics and sing along and take in the brilliance of the lyrics perfectly eloquent for a woman who was left behind. It was a WoW to hear the words, breathe in the words and feel ea one outside of my not doing well, because I’m great again (finally!).
This song slaps so damn hard. I was in high school when this came out and at the time I thought "Oh, here's some crazy woman. Pass". Yeah, I was a complete idiot. Alanis rocks.
I was 10 when this song came out and I remember singing along to it without really knowing what it meant. I'm 36 now and Alanis, I've been there girl! After decades of dating, I get it 🤣
This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. One. There really are so few that are incredible from start to finish, song after song. That is in relation to how many albums there are. I am not saying that I cant name twenty off the top of my head, however, this is truly one of the best of my generation. That being said, I must make it known that I have a very eclectic taste in music.
My sister really likes Alanis Morissette and I really like this song, definitely her most memorable and impacting. I don't feel like I have a good singing voice but damn, I've kind of been wanting to karaoke this one for a while now, it just seems like it would be really fun and cathartic.
ALANIS was incredible in writing this song... She was the first artist that MADONNA signed when Madonna had her first record label ( She had her own record label) and this album sold millions and millions all over the world.,
Daaamn, I Hella remember this song. I feel it, I was 5 when the song came out and I recall my late sister playing this song here and there and wow I did not know it had such of a deviating heart breaking impact . Love the song, thank you for expressing it!
