I rank the studio albums of the great #JoeEly, as well as discussing his live, re-record, and archival albums. I talk a bit about the #TexasMusic scene he's been a part of, mention some famous bandmates, and describe his influence on music.

Hi Brett. Really glad I discovered you on RU-vid last night with your Warren Zevon album ranking. I enjoy your enthusiasm and obvious knowledge. I am a huge Joe Ely fan, having seen him 3 times in Scotland but haven't heard much of his work since "Streets of Sin". My top 3 albums would be 1 "Honky Tonk Masquerade". 2. "Joe Ely". 3. "Down on the Drag" - The first Joe Ely album I bought. [It actually was his 3rd album, coming out before "Musta Notta......"] I would place "Love and Danger" higher, perhaps because I saw Joe live at the time this album came out when he had David Grissom on guitar in his band. - Great guitarist, but not as much fun as the second time I saw Joe with Jesse Taylor in his band. Anyway, another very entertaining half hour from you. I'm saving your John Prine monologue for tomorrow night. All the best, Russell Campbell.

Russell, thank you so much! Something had to be last and that was it for Ely *lol* Again, though, there are parts of it I like a lot. Your top three are all stellar choices, for sure. I've actually never seen him live :( I hope you enjoy the Prine talk. His work meant so much to me, still does, and his loss was immeasurable in my world.

Totally unfamiliar with Ely even though he is known to me by name. I'm more familiar with Jimmie Dale Gilmore who I saw with the incredible Bill Kirchen in one of the hottest show I've ever seen. I must admit that I've seen and passed up his albums a few times. But I'm sure to pick any of these up if and when I see them.

See, and I know Jimmie Dale through the Ely connection but I'm not as familiar with his albums. They're a bit harder to find (at reasonable prices, mostly). But JDG is a walking encyclopedia of Texas / Roots Country, and to me, his voice has only gotten better as he's aged.

@@brettsmusicreviews2641 Jimmie Dale comes from a different place and time. His songwriting and presence seem ancient, like he rode in over the Texas plains with a songbook under his arm. Hard to find, but worth it. I will be on the hunt for Joe Ely. Your recommendations have yet to let me down!
