1) Open Your Eyes by Yes. The only good news about it was the return of Steve Howe but the album stinks 2) Calling All Stations by Genesis. No Comments. Non even prog. 3) The Endless River by Pink Floyd. Hey Dave bring those demos lost on your computer and let's made an album of it. We got bills to pay. 4) Any ELP album after Love Beach. ( I love that one, actually). 5) Sorry, isn't this a prog channel?

Not a Prog channel but I'm always happy to talk about it, even if I don't know much - finding new music is always welcome :) Yeah, Endless River... not saying Division Bell was prog, by any standard, but it would have been a much better final PF album than this.

I had his songs going on a mix today laying in the sun and looking for the next best thing came on and hearing it tge second time was way different this time, especially understanding Warren a little more now, that one sums him up pretty good, my favorite song is renegade model citizen a sarcasstic wonderful song love the drums, or finishing touches right now, which are all on mr bad example I realized, I think this one and my rides here would have been in many ways better last albums, but the wind has powerful last word messages if you can hear them, besides of course keep me in your heart,the song every artists wishes they could write! But if anything the wind just rocks tge hell out of me, I could listen to disorder in the house (even tho the lyrics aren't the best imo) or party for the rest of the night on repeat, which combines my two favorite artists, it would have sounded good regardless but now theyre on it.

The Mr. Bad example album is such an underrated gem! I've come to appreciate The Wind more as time goes on. I think seeing the documentary, knowing what he was going through, made it more appealing to me. Thank you for your comments, it's fun to talk Zevon with fellow fans!

I heard your top 10 list of Gord’s songs, and I’m glad that not one hit was on the list. I’m really tired of hearing some of his hits. Particularly the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. That being said. I too made a list of top 10 Gordon Lightfoot songs, and mind you, I prefer his story songs over his “lovey dovey” ballads. My top 10 are as follows: #1. Cherokee Bend: A story about an indigenous boy losing his father who a group of white immigrants who planned to have him hanged. The boy had to do whatever he needed to survive, and ended up adapting to the white man’s leadership. #2. Hi’Way Songs: A song that’s biographical. It’s tells about traveling around from New York to Toronto, and living the lifestyle of a typical musician, but settling back on Canadian soil to relax for a bit. #3. Rich Man’s Spiritual: A gospel-folk song about planning a life. It’s a really good upbeat song. #4. Cold Hands From New York: A morbid ballad about being alienated in a town that you don’t live in. #5. Brave Mountaineers: A bluegrass toe-tapper, about life in the country. #6. Canadian Railroad Trilogy: Yes I’m breaking the rules here putting this 1966 “hit” on my list, but you got to admit. There’s a great history behind that song as Gord was commissioned by the CBC to write a song for a tv special commemorating Canada’s 100th Anniversary, and representing the building of the Canadian Railroad. It really paints a picture of the exhausted sweating workers hammering the spikes into the tracks. #7. Circle Of Steel: A winter ballad about a woman about to lose her home and is on welfare and drinking a ton of booze. #8. Nous Vivons Ensemble: A French song about uniting Quebec with the rest of Canada. #9. Ballad of The Yarmouth Castle: A shipwreck song about a cruise ship in Florida I think. Or is it a vessel? All I know is that it’s going down in flames #10. Approaching Lavender: I can’t really figure out what this song is about, but it’s a great melody. Well that’s my top 10. May not be yours, but if there are people who are interested in Gord’s deeper cuts, I recommend they give them a listen. Cheers.

The Watchman's Gone has long been my favourite Gord song of all time beside If You Could Read My Mind. I agree with list and am not familiar with the last two. Song for a Winter's Night is Fiona's favourite as a new convert to Gord. I'd add Bitter Green, The Circle is Small, Baby Step Back and Endless Wire. Some other great ones are second cup of coffee, ghosts of cape horn, hangdog hotel room , endless wire, the circle is small ,wherefore and why, cotton jenny, circle of steel, I'm not supposed to care , race among the ruins, high and dry, summertime dream, and last but not least sit down young stranger (to wear the crown of peace you must wear the crown of thorns ) best line ever. Great vid and what a difficult topic. I've always considered John Hiatt to be one of the greatest vocalists of our time as well as an apex songwriter. Walk On 3. Master of Disaster 4. The Tiki Bar is Open 5. The Open Road 6. Perfectly Good Guitar 7. Crossing Muddy Waters 8. Slow Turning 9. Bring the Family 10. Same Old Man These are all GREAT albums, every one of 'em. I should say that I don't have Dirty Jeans, although I have heard it and it's brilliant. Hi Brett. When I commented on your Dio ranking list I said I was looking forward to your next ranking list. You haven't let me down! Once again, I apologise for going on too long. John Hiatt is one of my favourites. I've seen him 3 times. Once in an old Glasgow theatre just after "Perfectly Good Guitar" came out. I think he was backed by the band which plays on the album. It was a great concert but wasted a bit by the fact that it was all seated. I saw him a few years later in Glasgow in a medium sized standing only venue. He was backed by a band called the North Mississippi All Stars who did a set on their own, the highlight of which was a 10 minute electric washboard solo. The band consists of two Dickinson brothers plus a bass player. Their dad, Jim Dickinson, produced a John Hiatt album. What a great concert! The third time I saw him was in Edinburgh in a small venue when he did a solo acoustic set. Great, but I preferred him the first twice I saw him. My favourite John Hiatt albums! I don't know his first 7 albums, first coming across him with "Bring the Family". I don't know "Mystic Pinball" or "Terms of my Surrender" from your list. - Must investigate. Of the 8 John Hiatt albums I own my order would be : 1. Slow Turning. 2. Perfectly Good Guitar. 3.Walk On. 4. Bring the Family. 5. Stolen Moments. 6.Dirty Jeans.... 7. Beneath this Gruff Exterior. 8. Little Head. I don't own but am familiar with "Crossing Muddy Waters", "The Tiki Bar is Open" and "Master of Disaster. They would be towards the bottom of my top ten, replacing "Little Head" . - I don't particularly like it. Thanks again for a very entertaining and informative video.
@brettsmusicreviews2641
@brettsmusicreviews2641 3 месяца назад
I always enjoy your opinions and interaction! Little Head is at the bottom of my Hiatt list overall. I hate to put it down because, even though I said I like them all to some degree, but that's one I can only really get into a few tracks from. I think even John looks back on it with a bit of puzzlement. I'm familiar with North Mississippi All-Stars but don't have any of their work. I do own a couple albums by their dad - Dixie Fried by James Luther Dickinson is one of the great albums of its time and tragically overlooked. I bet that show was exceptional! I've never had the opportunity to see Hiatt in concert, the few times he's come even close to my house, it's been on days it didn't work for me to go :( He's an artist whose work is varied and runs deep. I think you'll enjoy Terms Of My Surrender a lot. Oddly, even though it's in my Top Ten now, it took me awhile to warm up to Mystic Pinball. Once I did, though, I was hooked. Thanks for the feedback! :)

Hi Brett. I've given a listen to the 3 Rainbow albums plus "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" over the last few days, - I was wrong about my son having all the Sabbath Dio albums. He only has "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" + the live album. First of all, I'm not a huge heavy metal fan and certainly not familiar with many heavy metal albums. I actually saw Black Sabbath twice. First time in the mid 1970s and the second time around 2015. I couldn't fully appreciate them as I only knew "Paranoid" and "Iron Man." I've made up for this since and know quite a few of their songs from the first 6 albums. Anyway, what do I think? I found the first Rainbow album the most accessible. It sounds more like a hard rock album than a heavy metal one to me. Like it very much except for "If You Don't Like Rock n Roll" which I found a bit cliched. I don't think Dio's voice is quite so distinctive on this album and perhaps the album would have been as good with some other vocalist. "Rainbow Rising." A lot heavier than the first album. I like the first 4 tracks but the 2 closing tracks are magnificent and symphonic / operatic in their scope. - Verging on prog rock. Dio's voice is sensational. "Long Live Rock and Roll" strikes me as in the same vein as the first 4 tracks on "Rainbow Rising." I'll need to give it a few more listens. Like you, I think I prefer "Mob Rules" to "Heaven and Hell." "Country Girl" is my favourite track. Again, obviously fine albums but I'll need a few more listens. Overall, I've enjoyed all the albums and I'll dip into them occasionally. However, I think its time Willie Nelson or Fairport Convention for a change. Look forward to your next ranking video. Might give me a reason to investigate an artist / band I'm not familiar with.

@@russellcampbell3274 One of the best compliments we can receive as music fans is when we introduce others to what we like, and they end up liking (or at least respecting) our choices. I'll be honest, I don't like every Dio Band album and don't own them all. In fact, the two following Holy Diver are a bit of a let-down for me. They're good but failed to capture the magic of the debut. It wasn't until Dream Evil that I feel the band tried something new (and succeeded). Country Girl is epic! The final show I saw with that line-up was in 2009, they played that as a lead-in to the final song, Neon Knights. It was massive in concert! Now I feel a bit of pressure, I need to come up with something good :)

Hi Brett. Hope I don't go on too long here. I've got most of Townes's studio albums plus "The Old Quarter." Agree that "At My Window" is best studio album. I don't listen to his albums very much nowadays as I find them a bit depressing, especially as decrepitude is round the corner. However, saw Townes in Scotland 3 times between 1991 and 1994. The first time was in a biggish venue in Perth and he shared the stage with Guy Clark, alternating songs and telling stories about each other. Enjoyed it very much but not as much as the next time I saw him in a small venue in Perth with less than 100 in the audience. He was outstanding. Unfortunately the last time I saw him was in a big venue in Edinburgh in December 1994 when he had obviously drunk too much. - He would start a song and after a couple of lines forget what song it was. At his best live he sounded great, voice and guitar, was very funny and friendly. - And he wrote great songs. My late brother had been with .me the second time I saw him in Perth and met him the next day in the street. Townes was more than happy to stand and chat with him. I looked out a newspaper review of the concert in Edinburgh and it described him as a "wayward genius." If you add "kind hearted" to this description I think it sums him up.

I can't hit the "love" button enough to your response! Getting to see great shows AND meet him? I'm envious in the best of ways, my friend :) His music (and Guy's) have meant so much to me over the years. I, too, don't spin it as often as I used to. But when I do, when I'm in the mood, there's nothing better. Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's great knowing he was a kind person as well as immense talent!

What a wonderful collection!! Townes is simply unparalleled. It is really too bad that his early stuff is so thin sounding and ornamented. Old Quarter is probably the most emotionally stark album ever put out. Should be in every collection. Interesting that both he and Hank died on New Year's Day. Are there any two more spiritually connected artists? Cheers to Townes 🍻!

Old Quarter SHOULD be in every collection, you're right :) There are others who I spin more (Prine, Guy Clark, Gord), but Townes may be my GOAT of songwriting, despite not having a prolific body of work. The good & great live albums (OQ, Rear View Mirror, Live & Obscure) have a lot of overlap but each performance was so different from the next. OQ was recorded over 50 years ago but is as imminent now as ever. It has held up extremely well because the songs & performances are timeless. One of my favorite Hank songs is Alone & Forsaken, which I first heard on an album of demos with just he & his guitar. I remember thinking how much like a TVZ song it sounded! A few years back, I happened to be looking at the live stuff from the end of Townes' life and there, on a collection called In Pain, was Alone & Forsaken! The desperation is even greater than in Hank's original - I think TVZ knew his time on earth was drawing to a close sooner than later. Cheers, friend!

Gee, thank goodness I've never heard any of these. The only one I've considered is Iron Fist. So many of my favourite artists have made real stinkers. The Allman Brothers' two early '80s albums on Artista come to mind. While I don't hate them like most others do, it's incredible how far they fell into almost disco a mere decade after Fillmore. I could never get my head around Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Last DJ". Not horrible, but easily his weakest work and one where he just kinda rants and rambles. John Hiatt's "Little Head" (save for Pirate Radio), Asleep at the Wheel's "Framed" (horrid), Neil's "Monsanto Years" all come to mind as ones I wish I'd never heard. Another great video!

Heck, look at J. Geils Band on Centerfold compared to Full House - totally lackluster. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers opened their "Last DJ" world tour in Grand Rapids, MI and I was there. It was the first time I saw him, Mavis Staples opened and blew the roof off the place! The album is so-so but the songs were better in concert.

Very interesting list. 1974 was, of course, the best year ever. My birth year! The Watchman's Gone has long been my favourite Gord tune and that whole record is stellar. I agree totally with Van's fantastic live album which I've been meaning to feature. Both of the Willie are absolutely killer. Interesting that Blood On the Tracks was actually recorded in '74 making the Holy Trilogy entirely within that year. I'd add Dylan and The Band released one of my favourite live albums of all time "Before the Flood" came out in '74. Killer stuff. I've never been a Frank, either Sinatra or Zappa, fan, although I'm sure they are excellent if you are. I like hearing about such recommendations in case I stumble across them.

Before the Flood is stellar! Dylan's vocals were at a peak and the arrangements breathed new life into the songs. I'm surprised you don't care for Sinatra, but Zappa is fairly polarizing lol I get lost when spinning Van, that album takes me to another dimension entirely.

@@brettsmusicreviews2641 Sinatra just never reached me. I prefer Tony or Dean for that style of vocals. Perhaps his mobster past hazes my view somewhat. I actually think Zappa is brilliant and have a couple of his records. I just find him too disjointed to really get into. I don't generally go for the off-the-wall, but I can appreciate what he was doing.

@@roblabelle7874 Apostrophe is my favorite Zappa album in large part because it's accessible. I like a lot of his work but there's a lot I have difficulty getting in to. I have about 30 of his albums (including live & compilations records), which gives a good overview of his work but is seemingly almost just the tip of the iceberg. A lot of it is too far out for me.

Somehow, my comment went missing. And it was so eloquent. Anyway, another great video. Your enthusiasm and passion is contagious. You've given me some solid leads, especially in THE Americana category. I didn't get much new music in 2023 either, the reissues were just overwhelming. I did grab Willie's Bluegrass which is excellent and John R. Miller's new record is terrific. The Neil box has to be my favourite release of the year. A monster. I really enjoyed Bob's Fragments, Little Feat's Sailin' Shoes and the Ely reissues. The jazz was just nuts. If you like Moanin', I suggest Mosaic. A bit more explorative, but Blakey & Co. are just nuclear. Grant Green's Green Street is the other essential one I grabbed. Your love of American Aquarium has infected me. I grabbed a half dozen of their titles, but BJ's solo album is really special. I hope your 2024 is less painful than this past year was. It looks like your life is on an upward trajectory. Be well, and keep the music coming!!

I missed the new John R. Miller album, gonna rectify that as soon as I can get out record shopping again. Reidsville... untethered by the band name, he really laid everything on the line and made one of the best albums I've ever heard. Barham may just be the best lyricist in Americana music today. I will definitely be checking out your Jazz recommendations! As I said in another video, you have been one of the most influential friends regarding my listening in the last decade. I'm grateful for that but especially grateful for your friendship and counsel. I hope you have an amazing 2024!

This album can't be beat. I do agree that the alternate takes are fantastic and stand on their own merit. Sometimes it is hard to remove the original songs we hear on the album from their unshakeable position. I haven't listened to the remix (!) next to the original yet, but to me, it sounds cleaner yet maintains the vibe. Garth Brooks did cover Feel My Love not long after this was released and it is terrible. Bob at his darkest is Bob at his best. Garth just pretends. I'm very touched by the shout out 🙏.
