Moving-matte, not "motion control". And this was the first film to do it beating Back to the Future II by a year. There are still plenty of traditional tricks though like a lot of over the shoulder shots - I guess the budget for the moving-matte was limited.
Both great movies with interesting introductions - disagree re: the acting comment. I think the acting in Cronenberg films fit the genre and budgets they had. Also, I disagree that Brian DePalma made boring films.
Walken and all of the cast are spot on in Dead Zone. Woods is terrific in Videodrome. I think in the 90's we thought everything would only go up and up. Retrospection has shown that Cox was wrong in his estimation. Thus, Cult Classics.
