I apologize. At 28:10, the editor made a mistake. The encore piece is signed incorrectly. The arrangement of this fragment from Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker" was made by Mikhail Pletnev, not me.
К.Сен-Санс. Концерт для фортепиано с оркестром №2 соль-минор, соч.22.

Солист Александр Малофеев
Дирижер George Pehlivanian

Saint-Saens didn't know he'd written a concerto for masked pianist and orchestra. Malofeev not only conquers the notes but the pandemic challenge as well. A perfect spirited moving performance by all.
@JoshuavanderVeen
@JoshuavanderVeen 3 года назад
LOL sounds good and all, but notice that the wind section doesn't wear masks. If they really wanted to be "safe" by masking up, they would either avoid wind and brass, or somehow make them wear masks. By masking just half the orchestra, they proved the uselessness of all the "precaution." If one of the brass section had the 'Rona, oh well, I guess everyone else there will die. Boohoo. If not wearing a mask were that big of a deal, they wouldn't have let the wind/brass instruments go unmasked. And I'd like you to note that even though there was increased "risk" and "threat," no one there died, or even caught the 'Rona. Amazing. I wonder how. Maybe the masks didn't help. Just maybe. I have no idea. 🙄

Yes, he plays exactly as the composer wrote it and intended it to be played. He interprets how others interpreted first. I believe interpreting differently, adding your own touch to the music, is what really makes an interpreter great. Horowitz did. Rubinstein did. That's how all the greats did. Malofeev has an extremely sensitive touch, and he's a technical master, but he lacks unique interpretation.

@@JoshuavanderVeen ...I completely disagree with you. Alexander does indeed have his own interpretation. Isn't that exactly what has gotten him into a little trouble with judges, at times anyway, even though his remained within the composer's directives. I've heard it said that HIS UNIQUE interpretation will be what others will want to follow in the future...because it is so incredibly beautiful, awe-inspiring in fact. Just saying. So, others may disagree with your rather opinionated observation.

I have been an avid follower of Alexander for years and have often wondered, how many "sounds" can one elicit from a single key/note ... Alexander seems to answer, as many as are necessary ... as his fingers effortlessly caress the keys with such finesse as to extract a me'lange of tones ranging from nearly imperceptibly delicate to powerful in order to deliver exactly the "right" note in exactly the right intensity and duration ... you not only "hear" Alexander, you feel the intensity and gentleness of his soul ... Alexander becomes the music that flows from his inner being. I hope to live long enough to witness his genius in person ... and I'm 81, so time is fleeting.

To "go down" as you assume is not an option for someone who is not afraid of hard work. Also, it very much depends on what you consider as striving for perfection, which may...or may not...include remaining where you're at...or in a related field...or choosing to do something entirely different! What if he chooses to spend his time composing....or becomes a conductor...or who knows what! That doesn't mean he has "gone down." See?
