One of the most classic and well known singer songwriters, Neil Young delivers a wonderful acoustic performance in story teller fashion of his song Old Man. Alexis and Burch also wind up talking about petting manatees which is really a funny segment. ‪@neilyoungchannel‬

The Stephen Stills quote about Neil Young was that he was doing what he wanted to do: "play folk music in a rock band."

The beef between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd was built up more in rumors than anything else. Ronnie Van Zant, Skynyrd's lead singer, was a big fan of Neil Young's music and they met together on more than a few occasions and were friendly with each other.

This performance (Feb 1971) was the very first time it was ever played live and the very first time anyone in the public heard it. It hadn't had radio airplay yet and the album "Harvest" was released 1 year after this performance. (Feb 1972)

As Neil talks about the inspiration of the song before the song starts with a bit more info: Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man. The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970. Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused.

My question would be: 350K in 1970 is the same as 3 million today. Where did Young get this kind of money before the income from his upcoming career? Old man, were you a millionaire like me? WTF? Struggling musician from Canada moves to LA with 3 million in his pocket? C'mon man, what is the story behind all this wealth before he was popular?

Neil Young was a product of that special time in Winnipeg that spawned Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Lenny Breau, Fred Turner, Chad Allan, Joey Gregorash and even early Terry Jacks and Bob Rock before moving to BC. 6:44 She nailed it! She felt the vibe. That beautiful vibe. This is Folk, Folk/Rock. Singer/songwriter "types" def aren't limited to country music. Plus, Neil's accent would never fit into Country. Neil, Bob Dylan, and many others in the hippy era gave us wonderful stories, put to beautiful music. Folk Music. And, trust me, Country music lovers don't often care for Folk music. It's very different. And a Country music radio station would never play this. Also, I don't believe Neil would allow it.

Yes those were TV lights, having done the job back in those days the colour cameras took a lot of light and the set needed to be lit as well. It took three lights to light a person properly let alone the area around them. You had a key light just to see the person, a fill light on the other side of the face of the key light to fill in the shadows and a back light to help separate the person from the background.

It seems this was recorded on February 23rd 1971, in BBC's Radio Theatre, London, UK, and broadcast April 1st, 1971. So this came 1 1/2 year after his performance at Woodstock with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Where they played in the night fro Sunday to Monday between 3AM and 4AM with an acoustic set, an electric set, and two encores, one acoustic, one electric - two of the pieces were Stills/Young only. Also released April 1971, their live album after Woodstock, recorded 1970 in NYC, Chicago, and LA, was called "For Way Street". This has a similar acoustic/electric pattern and recorded with more care than Woodstock. Awesome album.

Gotta say it, Neil Young is The MAN! Seen him live four times, and each show was completely different from the others, set list and bands included. His farm in California is called Broken Arrow, he still owns it. The Neil/Skynyrd thing was a creation of the fourth estate, they were actually on very good terms when Lynyrd Skynyrd had their plane crash. Ronnie Van Zant used to wear Neil Young T Shirts on stage at shows, and members of Crazy Horse, Neil's sometime backup band, wore Skynyrd T's during shows too. For something more rock oriented try "Rockin' In The Free World". Neil isn't "The Godfather Of Grunge" for no reason.

Young was an early folk-rock and could switch between traditional one man guitar/sing and many times harmonica as well as if in a Sixties coffee shop but then can pick up an electric guitar and make a unique form of heavier rock which foreshadowed the Grunge of the nineties to the point the Seattle Grunge scene took after his flannel shirts and unkempt appearance and somewhat imitated his sound. Hey Hey My My.

It’s not country music! EDIT: “Country” music was originally the same as folk music, before music recordings became a big industry. After that it devolved into *exclusively* white, southern music of generally poor composition. “Folk” music kept quality high and commercialism low, and this relation remains, except that Country has improved, on the whole, in the last generation. Great reaction, thank you!
