Ainz in this anime is the equivalent of a max level max geared character going to the starter zone

"Momonga" was the Name of him as a Player. "Ainz Ooal Gown" is the Name of his Guild. And yes, People from his Guild and his Friends will recognize "Momonga". But he's not strictly looking for his fellow Teammates, but anyone who generally had the same Fate as him and came from Yggdrasil, the Game. As such, Players that were not from his Guild won't necessarily know who Momonga is. But they *will* know Ainz Ooal Gown, as the Guild was very famous. So by changing his Name he is much more likely to get Attention from former Yggdrasil Players. When it comes to "Seriousness", it depends on how you define that. Would you call a very gory Show serious on Account of that? I think there will be some quite disturbing Scenes in the Future (which are way more extreme in the Light Novel, and I assume the Comment Section will tell you about it when the Time comes), but who needs to be the one suffering in order for it to count as "serious"? If Subaru was super fine and dandy and it was only People around him that got massacred, would you still see it as serious? Well... depending on how you look at Things, Overlord will definitely find Ways to fight with Re:Zero on your Scale I believe, or maybe not. But without spoiling I can already tell you that there will be some ruthless Stuff coming up eventually.

In pvp MMOs the guild names are far more important than player names. I can remember plenty of guild names because we had to know who we were allowed to fuck with.

The Angels in the Anime adaptation are Mechs. The Angels in the Novel are the Artistic depictions we commonly see in works of Arts. The higher rank the Angels are, the more Biblically accurate it is in the Novels.

The anime doesn't cover this as it was only in the light novel but, the guy that Ainz fought didn't die on the field there. He was taken back, tortured for information and even experimented on. He would end up dying months later. Ainz did make him the offer though, give up and die quickly and painlessly or fight and die slowly and painfully.

The reason Ainz was worried, initially, of the sealing crystal, was because they said they were going to summon the "Highest of Angels", which is actually something that would take all his power to defeat and posed a danger to him, but instead they only summoned "Dominion Authority" which is only a mid-Ranked Angel, but is apparently the most powerful Angel they are aware of.

This episode made me fall in love with overlord. This is powerfantasy done right. You knew that Momonga was level 100 and quite strong in the game since he was in a top ranking guild but you did not know the power scaling of the new world. Then you were shown the strongest knight of the kingdom fight against those angels and eventho he was able to fight quite a few of those he still lost at the end. Then my boy Momonga came and just oneshot all of those and he forced the enemy to use their trump card with an item that summoned an angel so powerful that mankind cannot hope to defeat it. He said it was seventh tier magic (you can remember this for the powerscale comparison) and Momonga still oneshot that thing like it was nothing. This gives you an idea of just how freaking strong he is... Also yes he changed his name into the guilds name so it is easier to recognize. I play World of Warcraft and I could tell you the top 10 Guild names in this game but if you ask me about player names in those guilds I think I would struggle to give you more than 5. What I LOVE about the show is its duality of good and evil depending on how you look at the show. From the perspective of Ainz he got teleported into a strange world. He is the protagonist that tries to increase the guilds reputation in this strange new land so he can find and unite with friends or other players that are in the same situation as he is. If you look at the story from the perspective of the people from this new world suddenly an Undead Overlord appeared that is stronger than anything they ever witnessed (if we look at it from the viewpoint of Gazef or the enemies in this episode), that wants to take over the world and that has an army of undead or other monsters that view humans as lower lifeforms that should be happy if they are killed by Ainz. So far it looks like we are rooting more for the villain here :D

"i'd like 2-3 episodes just exploring the fortress!" buddy, let me tell you: Nazarick is so big you could make an entire season just out of the NPCs and how they live. although each floor was basically hand-made, it is no joke. each one could be explained as "its own little world" and it would be no lie

Interesting fact: if you play dnd you'll notice that overlord shares a lot of similarities with how the power system works (eg. spells are tiered with dnd having lvl 1-9 spells and overlord having tier 1-10 spells). This is not an accident, if i recall correctly, the reason the creator wrote overlord was because him and his friends couldn't play as much tabletop rpgs as they used to (hence Ainz being really upset in the first episode that his friends were no longer playing the game before the shutdown and one of Ainz' driving motivations is to find his friends in the new world he's in instead of something standard like trying to find a way back to his world)

I was indeed very obsessed with Overlord for a time, especially after this episode. The world is deep, and pretty well constructed, and the written version tickles the imagination with realms just asking to be explored. I do have problems with it but they aren't really relevant at the moment. 7:05 the angels aren’t supposed to be mechs they are supposed to look more like actual angels but the anime changed that from the manga/ light novel 10:40 Konosuba is literally the only Isekai comedy that has reached any high level of popularity. Every other popular Isekai takes itself at least somewhat seriously. They may contain jokes, and tropes intended for humor, but its not the point of the other shows even for something like No Game No Life. There are a lot of other Isekai that are lighthearted or humorous but they are either flat-out bad, never made much of an impression due to the lack of action/story stakes, or are underrated hidden gems. 16:50 You mostly understand but one of the mages literally accelerated a rock at Ainz. She reflected the rock back at him and said that was an insult 28:35 Yeah but Ains doesn’t know this. To him it was an offhand comment he didn’t take seriously and forgot about, but his underlings are fully planning to take over the world, while Ains himself is ignorant of the plan 29:00 members of his guild might recognize the name “Momonga” but other players probably would not. However, because Ains Ooal Gown was a top-tier guild famous for having a guild base that was once attacked by hundreds of players who failed to conquer it almost all players from Yggdrasil would have heard of it.

Background info from the novel: in the game Yggdrasil there was a lot of racism from players with a human character towards people who played something inhuman, so in the beginning, Ains Ooal Gown was created by inhuman players banding together for the sake of mutual self-protection. Them climbing the rankings of most powerful guild and keeping a public dungeon as their private base of operations without contest from other guilds that couldn't defeat them only speaks about their power, skills and the wealth of money and resources they amassed.

To provide some clarification, he has high tier physical and magical nullification. That's a passive skill that negates damage from spells tier 6 and under, as well as physical attacks below a threshold of about level 60 characters. Meaning that when Nigun said he was about to summon the highest tier anger it could've posed a real threat to Ains, however, they summoned something closer to mid tier than high tier which is why Ains was so disappointed.

The voice actor is Takehito Koyasu, probably the most famous VA in Japan and IIRC he has the highest amount of voice acting roles in Japan so he actually is in pretty much everything.

In case anyone wonders what happened to the guy with Dio's voice and his squad (the anime skipped this part) : They got taken to Nazarick where they became test subjects and were also interrogated, the funny guy died during interrogation.

when Albedo stepped in, it was because despite all that going on she noticed the ONE GUY who tried to sling an actual rock at him... and it was so obscenely low effort it pissed her off, so she knocked it back and blew his head off with it. She's a tank type character despite the elegant appearance.

The name of the guild itself was more famous than the names of the individual members, so he's trying to catch the attention of any other players that may have been sent with him. Fun fact, the guild was originally 9 members, and mixed around characters from the phrase "Nine's Own Goal" to get Ainz Ooal Gown. EDIT: This isn't exactly a spoiler, just a footnote from the novels that I don't recall being mentioned in the anime.

It really depends what you mean by "serious". If you want to talk psychology, perhaps re:zero is more serious. But if you want to talk morality and perspective, Overlord is more serious. They are both way into the serious spectrum for anime but not in the same way.

Overlord just tends to hide a lot of stuff behind the scenes, so I recommend reading comments to enjoy it even more on this one. It’s even darker than the anime itself and you will soon know what that really means.

From the isekais that you listed, I think Overlord is the most dark and you will see why that is in the future. Also, like some people have mentioned before, the anime leaves out some details that enhance that grimdark aspect even further, but I am sure everyone will tell you about those when we are at the right moment in the anime. I was super excited to see you finally tackle this awesome anime that I consider one of my top 5 fantasy series of all time (I have read the light novels several times already).

This show is by no means perfect but the world and specifically the characters are why i love it so much.

This anime has really good world building. Some episodes goes past in a blink of an eye while others are quite heavy on the story front and might feel slower. It's great ! I love how it makes you guess and wonder how things are connected. I'm so excited for the movie later this year /o/

It does actually get kinda darker in the later seasons. You can probably take a look at the show's Pleiades special episodes for that really goofy and fun side to things.

A good summing up of a scale of seriousness. Konosuba being straight comedy, No game a comedy but serious world building and stakes, Slime slice-of-life turned serious, Tanya being serious but having fun with the situation sometimes, Overlord doing the same, and Re:Zero taking the whole story seriously. Ains Ooal Gown is the name of the Guild though most of the players would recognize the name of the Guild it is more unlikely for random players to Know the specific names of the 41 single players that formed the guild... By friends he means any player... not the guild members...

In Overlord "Instant Counter" is a martial art that readjusts your body into the normal standing position. You could be falling over or upside down, it doesn't matter. It is meant to help you instantly counter an enemy, but as you see it can be used in other ways as well.

Youre spot on with his hessitation for battle. Ains is a tactician, hes usually careful about howbhe approaches a situation and ues, he has no idea how strong he is in this world right now.

Ainz doesn't have cheats, he is simply a high lvl player grieving noobs in the starter town. He is lvl 100. The strongest full-blood humans can get in this world is lvl 40. Gazef is very close to lvl 40, and the plane theocracy guys are probably in the 20s or early 30s. The Dominion Authority is likely between lvl 50 and 60.

The angel summons are all based on angelic orders in descending order of hierarchy - Higher Orders: Seraphim, Cherubim, Ophanims (Thrones) Middle Orders: Dominions, Virtues, Powers Lowest Orders: Principalities, Archangels, Angels So essentially, they threw 2nd tier mobs at him, a 3rd tier mid boss and a 6th tier boss and got nowhere close to harming him.

Just for the understanding of what exactly happened The first Martial Art the Head Warrior used against the Archangel Flames was for imbuing the weapon in something like a magic effect, because the archangels can't be affected by regular weapons, just from magic or magic weapons or enchanted weapons Also, just starting the battle, the Head Warrior used 4 different martial arts, that's like the limit most warriors use in battles, even if they know more, for the brain is just too much effort to use more than 4 in the same battle, and even using just 4 is really exhausting

I'll explain some things that were unclear (no spoilers) Ainz's base has appeared on the border of three countries: The Kingdom, the Empire, and the Slane Theocracy. By chance, all these countries are fundamentally human, but there are also other more distant nations that are not human, but monsters like dragons. In reality, despite their high numbers, the human species is one of the weakest and is constantly under siege or enslaved by the rest of the world. The nation that cares most about “ensuring the survival of humanity” is the Theocracy and to do so it resorts to means that are quite radical, since if it didn't, humanity would have fallen long ago. It is because the power of the Theocracy arouses fear in other countries that no heteromorphic nation dares to invade human nations. Gazef Stronoff is the best warrior in the kingdom and one of the most honorable characters, but the kingdom he serves has many problems that have weakened it and the safety of the human nations is in danger because of it. The Slane Theocracy had decided to go ahead and bring about the downfall of the Kingdom themselves, before a non-human nation attacked it. So, they can create a new powerful human country or let another absorb it. The problem is that Gazef Stronoff is very strong and absolutely loyal to his king, so the Theocracy knows that they will never get him to defect from the kingdom, that's why they chose to assassinate him first. And in truth they were only able to set up a trap for him because many nobles from the corrupt kingdom conspired to kill him out of jealousy. That reveals to you the degree of corruption that the kingdom has, that they do not mind killing their best captain commander in order to gain a little more power. In the middle of all this Ainz falls and turns everything upside down as if it were the Adams family. The Sunlight Scripture are an Elite commando of the Slane Theocracy, but they haven't been able to do anything to Ainz and this has revealed a lot about the strength he possesses and the magic system. The Magic of Ygdrassil game has 10 fundamental levels. Normal people can't use magic. The more or less gifted can use 1 or 2d Tier Magic. Great talents can use 3th Tier Magic. Super geniuses and gifted people can do 4 or 5th Tier Magic. With the help of invocations or ceremonies it is possible to do magic of level 6th and 7th Tier Magic but it is believed that it is impossible for a single individual to do it. That's why Captain Nigan shouts "Dominion Authority's magic completely surpasses humanity". Since that angel's ray of light is 7th Tier Magic. But it is still a mystery who they are or if they still exist. The Data Crystal used by Nigun is a Yggdrassil Item that in theory can store 9th Tier spells and that's why he thought the angel inside would be from the first hierarchy, the seraphim or cherubim, but a Dominion Authority is the middle rank between mid-ranks and so he felt bad for being on his guard. Before starting to fight, Ainz put up an anti-spy barrier so that no one could watch them from afar with magic. That is why the sky suddenly seems to crack for an instant, because someone tried to observe from afar, but the barrier stopped him. Luke pretty much nailing the scaling of serious to funny list of isekais he has seen so far. Btw, after credits scenes-check is mandatory in some shows. If I remember correctly, episode 9 had the warm hug/embrace scene. Something to add, even though people have already said it. In the novel(source material) the gore and disturbing stuff were way more than in the anime adaptation. Take the angel summoning dude for example. The anime just makes you think he died after the battle but in the novel it is explicitly said that he was captured and tortured for information just like how Ains said about the choice he made himself. . . . Last but not least. Magic ranks in this anime are pretty easy to follow. 1 is the weakest and 10 is the strongest. It will be briefly mentioned in future episodes alongside the World Items so just keep it at the back of your head.

You're right about the reputation of the guild name Ains Ooal Gown. It's never explained in the show but it was one of the most famous guild in the game. Unfortunately the anime doesn't explain the game data, but Ains (Momonga) is level 100 as well as most of the floor guardians. However his character build was mainly for roleplaying a necromancer, so his jobs are not specialised in magical or physical combat.

He changed his name so non guild members would recognize him. All his friends would know momonga, but since ainz ooal gown was a famous (infamous) guild in yggdrasil, any player in this world would recognize it and know he is another player. He wants to find his friends, but he also wants to find other players to try and figure out what happened

The reason why Momonga change his name to Ainz is because Momonga's name is only known to his friend, but Ainz Oal Gown is known by any player as it's a guild that's very famous (not the best, but one of the best) on that game previously. Momonga want to look for any player that got isekai'd just like him, not just his friend (as even he isn't certain if they are on that world too) that's why if he use Ainz Oal Gown as his name, someone from his world might recognize it. Also random trivia: The Guild Ainz Oal Gown was originally named "Nine Own Goals" because it started with Nine Members (including Momonya) who each has different Goal in that game, however as the guild became larger and more people joined, the name no longer hold meaning, so they changed it a bit into Ainz Oal Gown.

There is a well-known meme about the difficulty of the worlds each isekai protagonist reaches, which is... Overlord: Easy Mode. Konosuba: Normal mode. Tania the Devil: Hard Mode. Rezero: expert mode. 😂😂 Although in terms of how dark its world is and how cruel Overlord is, it is only below Rezero, but since its protagonist is full of traps, you don't usually realize it..😅

You were totally right for thinking Ainz sent gazef first to learn if the enemy has some surprisingly strong member, he was even stabbing himself with many of those dead soldier`s weapons to see the effects. and if you have problem with his name, just call him bone daddy like many fans lmao. and fun fact of episode: Ainz was expecting the dude to summon Seraphim the highest rank of angels, thats why he was disappointed, Since ainz doesn`t mind stronger foes, in fact in game they were literally farming the gods for materials and money.

Yes, your starting to see one of the reasons why I love this series so much. Everything Ainz does is carefully planned out as best he can. Testing himself and his forces against this new world slowly. Unravelling its mysteries, lore and systems piece by piece. It's so refreshing. Also you should know that I usually dislike the isekai genre. Not because its overused or anything like that. It's because most of the protagonists drive me up the wall with how they act. However this, Rising of the Shield Hero and Saga of Tanya the Evil are three examples of isekai I like.

Ains owl goal is one of the biggest guild in the game, and probably the one with the strongest defenses, like Ains said no one ever was able to reach the ninth floor of nazarick on a invasion, even after his friends left him alone

There are some truly dark moments to come. Some you find yourself cheering along side him, others you make your stomach turn. You'll see over the coming series his battle with his lost humanity and the lengths he'll go to for his new found family

Ainz will show his superiority on different planes in each Season. Here we can see him as a competent magic caster, but that's not evetything this season lord Ainz has to show you...

In case you are wondering. Albedo is a Full tank build npc designed to stand in front of the final door of the Tomb of Nazeric against a entire raid of players. Buying time for the Guild members of Ains Ooal Gown to resurrect and sally forth from the final room and counter attack the raiders.

Momonga is a type of dwarf flying squirel in Japanese (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel?wprov=sfla1) which may be another reason he chose to spread the more unique guild name of Ains Ool Gown instead. I also love the idea of the great overlord having the name of a cute little rodent.

His guild in the game was in the top 10 strongest. They completed the dungeon and gained possession of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. The game had the opportunity to create NPC guards. And the guys from the guild created them by giving a piece of themselves, their character. When the developers decided to turn off the game. Mamonga was sad because he loved his friends from the guild very much, and they went through a lot in the game together. Therefore, the Great Tomb of Nazarick and the NPCs that his guildmates created are very dear to him. Nazarick's NPCs remind him of his old friends, and he treats them like his own children. And God forbid someone tries to harm at least one NPC of Nazarick. Death is a luxury that Mamonga will never give you. You will suffer forever. And believe me, there was still an idiot who dared to harm 1 NPC. Mamonga is ready to do anything for the safety and happiness of the NPC of Nazarick. In addition to the guild name being better known than individual player names, now if on the off chance he ever meets someone who claims to have met his friends, he'll have a way to test them if they're telling truth, since a friend would only know him as Momonga, but a poser would call him Ainz.

The guild is more known that the people in the Guild. The guild itself conquered the tomb of Nazarrick and literally made it their home. If you remember the first episode, at the beginning, the players were trying to raid Nazarrick and the floor guardians literally beat them back. Another thing to note, the Slaine Theocracy's Trump card, was suppose to be super powerful, HOWEVER, their abilities is literally a fraction of what Ains and his floor guardians are capable of.

One small detail in this episode that stands out to me in a much bigger way on rewatch is Ainz's offhand line about regarding humans with about the same fondness as one would regard some cute animals. Consider how we as a society treat our animals. Our beloved pets, the mice that get into our walls, the cows that go into our cheeseburgers, etc. In the anime this kinda has some implications for this new world that just received an army of creatures who aren't human and have zero respect (at least at the start) for those who are. IRL it kinda makes you think. We really are the overlords of our own world, aren't we?

if you want some context for power scaling, the strongest angel they brought Dominion Authority that takes several of the Theocracies strongest faith casters to summon is like level 60, Ainz is 100, Gazef is like 30ish

His friends know his name, but others from the game would not, but as a top 50 guild, Ainz Owl Gown was widely known. so using that name will attract the attention of anyone who came from the game if they are there. This was explained in the book and a lot of this extra dialogue was left out, otherwise the anime would be WAY too long.

when the sky fractured, slane was peeking on ainz and their pawn. but against ainz countermeasures the peeket got injured terribly. also when albedo got pissed momon got hurt, somethin inhuman monstrous was slithering inside her armor iirc. albedo describe shalltear as a lamprey while being described as gorilla by other. wonder what albedo true form is? winged gorilla?

actually the story is not that serious, the story will be more serious when Ainz starts to conquer the world, and carries out several large-scale massacres when there are kingdoms that betray him or don't obey him, and there is 1 scene of Ainz slaughtering around 70,000 troops just by using 1 magic, and actually there are many more but I don't want spoilers

For the name thing, I think it works as a test. Someone who is also from the game (a friend from guild or a potential enemy) would recognize the guild name. But by keeping his in-game name a secret, it can be used as a test of sorts. If they know THAT, then he knows they know him personally or at least beyond just name recognition. So the name Ainz draws in anyone also from the game. But if they call him Momonga, it's most likely someone who knows him and can trust.

Luke DUDE, Momonga is lvl 100 max stats and the other people are hopefully were lvl 10. He doesn't even need to use cheats

random thought: six fold slash is a massive move and eat away a lot of concentration of the user maybe instant counter is used to nullified any after affect of six fold slash allowing Stronoff to deal massive damage to the enemy without time lag. oh yeah its extremely bright in S1 compare to S4 deep mud darkness its gonna make u reevaluate Momonga's humanity. Albedo faults, cons and madness made her the most lovely female character.

The Archangel Flames have a passive skill that grants them resistance to normal weaponry. And the Principality of Observation buffs the defense of all allies _as long as it is stationary._ Because Gazef was equipped with no magic items, he was forced to use Martial Arts skills, which drain physical and mental energy. And because the summoners kept bringing in more Archangel Flames as soon as he killed them, Gazef could never get close, and eventually, he wears down first. Sunlight Scripture knew what they were doing before the fight even started. Dominion Auhority is actually only a middle tier summon. However, it isn't weak, per se. It successfully defeated a Demon God, 200 years ago in this world's history. However, only being in the level 40s, it is of course no match for Ainz. Also, performing the ritual to create a Dominion Authority costs an incalculable amount of money and resources for Slane Theocracy. So, not only did Nigun lose, he just wasted a national treasure in the process.

The thing is, Overlord as an anime is dark, but it still isn't as dark as the light novels. Anime likes to omit or skip stuff so I really loved reading comments on each episodes on reddit because they filled in on the much darker stuff that happened and HOLY FUCK... Hopefully people in the comments here can also shed the light on these darker stories as they've already did on this particular episode as well.
