The lesson of today is. When overheating starts, shut down the engine. Anchor, Stop and fix it. Love your channel.
@TheDigitalMermaid

The day started with me pulling apart the sea strainer, so in my mind (obviously lacking, now), I thought I had done my best to address the over heating. I also had Bruce take a look, and he felt the water flow was fine, if diminished. When Colin was at the helm, the impeller failed suddenly and catastrophically, I think. Shy of obvious mistake of not considering the impeller, I'm not sure what I could have done differently in high sight. :)

WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!! I came across your channel a few days ago and binge watched all your boat related videos. You've established quite the impressive support community. You've certainly been the thrown in the deep end when it comes to "getting your feet wet" (hehe) being a mariner. You've probably experienced more trials than most people get in a year and have come out still smiling (hats off to you, Madi). Have to say the one most impressive skill you've mastered is the retrieval of dropped paraphernalia into the bilge 😊. WELL DONE GIRL!!!

We did a similar trip getting our boat home for the refit. The engine overheated during the horrible mile outside fort Lauderdale at the worst possible time and we got pushed into a metal navigation buoy by the wake of a large boat almost immediately. A metal ladder off the buoy peirced the hull above the waterline and almost broke our port windows. Something I've noticed is how often people have engine related issues is far higher than most would believe. :/ Almost every RU-vid channel on here has people talking about busted engine issues. Maybe the endlessly reliable diesel engine isn't actually all that reliable. 🤣 We made it out ok, So don't worry your not alone when it comes to first trips going a little crazy. Thanks for documenting this journey. Its been fun watch.
@TheDigitalMermaid

Aye Samantha, I agree. I'm really coming to understand that most people are good, and don't take any pleasure in others being down. Some folks though, they know how to twist the knife to bring out the worst in people. I hope they lose in time, and people can just be themselves, good people.

@TheDigitalMermaid 9 месяцев назад
Abso-flipping-lutely. People keep telling me "oh but diesels are simple! yanmars are reliable!", and sure, fine, maybe that's true but it's all still far more moving parts to fail, and they all depend on each other. Electric will be a lot more simple. But, on the paying-it-forward, I've learned a lot so I might be better able to help folks in the future.

@@TheDigitalMermaid your boat will have a fully stocked marine electrical chandlery on board. I can’t tell you how many times people have been looking for odd parts or about to do sketchy “temporary solutions” and then found out my boat has all the tools. Heavy gauge crimper, meters of shrink tube, lots of lug terminals, MC4 crimp set for panels. Thermal camera, multimeters out the wazoo, dc converters and power supplies, etc. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to pay it forward on the electrical side. My latest was doing an out-of-warranty recovery of a 100ah drop-in lithium battery for a day-sailor friend. It was so out balance that it was only giving 20ah of use. I was able to re-balance, and fully capacity it for him. With proper balance, he got 92ah. Saved him a week of the season and $400 for a replacement.

If you want to make friends by wrangling pixies carry cheap sensors for exhaust temperature (like DS18b50 and a cheap display / 7-seg). And another note: this style of raw water pumps (positive displacement, this bump squeezing the blades actually produces suction) are self priming and silicone does not evaporate. In some regions it is really common to clog the raw water circuit with vegetation so they're designed to be cleaned out in a hurry.

She just wants to know: what’s next … and: can you fix it yourself?
@TheDigitalMermaid

Your wife is wise. I said from the start that part of the benefit of buying an older boat that needs fixing is how much I'd learn in the process. I know folks who had brand new boats, and they had problems, too. Learning how to maintain the boat and fix things is super important, especially going off-shore.

@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid 9 месяцев назад
They are waterproof, usually, but they don't float. The problem in my case is that the "media kit" used the USB port, and that meant taking the door off, so it was no longer waterproof. However, it doesn't float, and so in this case, it was a goner in any case. I was under way when it fell, in an active and murky canal. Even if I could have tried to go in after it, visibility would be minimal, I wouldn't know exactly where to look, and other boats (with their props) would be passing by.

oh mate - losing another gopro (or is that the first one) not good just a silly thought, have you thought about fixing them with a safety cable or string, you can get some simple types that just stick on with an adhesive sticky foam pad, then tie onto nearest possible place, frame etc, at least if they try the old Lemming thing they won't get far i watched a chap the other day, stopped to put his nice camera down while they were crossing a river, and yep, in it went, apparently his fourth camera, once is bad, but forth, that's pretty careless and here i am, can't afford one, let alone lose one, although i do say in one breath, i have had quite a number of cameras during my life, spent out hundreds and decided never again, just recently got given an old Cannon EOS which still works rather well - must try it out oh wow - your having quite a moment - remember, keep calm, catch your breath, take time out

Only lost the one, thankfully. I had thought about tethering it, but how I was moving it around, I figured any line short enough to keep it out of the water would be short enough to be a tripping hazard.
