I recently had the chance to catch up with Jordan Jonas of the History Chanel's ALONE Season 6 and Nate Weber of Season 8 to talk about our experiences on the show. We discus the mental side of survival, the tradeoffs of fishing vs hunting and trapping, how ego can hurt you and the importance of family.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

I can’t be the only one who’d love to see a season where it’s groups of two. I know it defeats the idea of being “Alone” but it’d be intersecting to see. Maybe a spin-off called “together”.

Do they have rules about what animals you're not allowed to kill? I think I saw a Fisher in one episode that wasn't allowed to be killed. But what about other things? Like if a bear (black or grizz) was walking by could you arrow it? Of if it's a deer can you shoot only a buck? For $500 grand would you rather pay the fine for shooting something you're not supposed to shoot vs starving yourself out of the competition?

You guys/gals have accomplished the same as a person joining the military. Whether you get injured and put out in basic or go all the way and retire, you have done more than 99 percent of the populace. I know some ground pounder out there is losing his shit right now, but just as he is serving his country with his Buddies, many of you also serve by teaching the skills you used to others that raises the odds for exponentially more people to make it thru "oh shit" long enough for that patrol officer, park ranger, fireman, infantryman/tanker/Marine, et al to pull them out.

Thank you Clay for the amazing moments, in particular your pre-win monologue... it was intense. Stay safe, boys!

There is nothing wrong with thanking the animal for providing you sustenance to survive. In fact it's noble & shows true appreciation that the animal's life has been given so that you can survive. It shows humility & true appreciation for the things that we take for granted in our spoiled rotten existence. Our luxurious lives would come to a screeching halt if the supply chain broke down. People would immediately understand the gratitude felt for something that gives their life to give you life. Selfish shallow people. Dude's answer was disappointing because he felt like he had to defend it, but at the same time played it down like he didn't respect the act of taking an animals life. Kinda like screw the damned deer or fish. I think it's appropriate to give thanks for everything we put into our bodies. It didn't get on your plate easily.

Tularemia is the scientific term for the thing people get eating rabbits/Jackrabbits out of season. The season is 2 weeks after first cold below 30 F or 0 C to the end of that as long as there is at least a half to full week above 30 F after, 2 days of warm then back to cold should not be an issue. Also this kills the other bugs/pests that live in the fur or if not cold enough, at least makes them inactive.

Great interview Clay! Your comments from 13:30 - 13:38 were spot on! Since humans moved to a farming/urban lifestyle, we have lost the basic survival skills. It is rewarding to learn these skills. Also lost is the old rite of passage where usually adolescent males would go out into the wilderness alone for days to ... 'find themself' for want of a better phrase. Nate's comment about 3 days alone is a very achievable time-frame for many people. A long weekend would do it.

I learned that a long time ago when I lived in Kodiak, AK. In 5th grade we sold chocolate bars to raise money to Go on a week long trip to a deserted island. We had 4 adults and like 20-30 kids. No T.V. or electricity...we learned how to build shelters and hunt and fish. When I moved down to the states my little brother sold the same chocolate bars to go on a trip to kings island. I was laughing so hard... I really do miss just being out in the middle of nowhere and just living.

Hi Clay ...I would say congrats but not so fast. Myself a former wildlife researcher, so perhaps a bit more observant then most. Can you explain what was in your cast iron cook pot, in episode 5 as you prepared for your deer hunt? It sure looked like Penne Pasta in meat sauce. I noticed a quick cut to the scene and and then the pot is turned the other way and tilted so you can't see what is inside. I know there is nothing you could have been wild foraging that would have the color and texture of tomato sauce. Curious if you will respond to this ? Have been a fan of show and many of it's participants...but appears it could be fake like so much else they call reality.

How closely do they keep tabs on what you are doing? Because I think I would say f-it and shoot any animal that comes along no matter if in season or not, this is suppose to be survival, not hunting. In true survival no animal or fishing technique is off limits, nor is there boundaries of where you can search for food.

years ago in Colorado camping with friends @10,000' one day 2 of the kids got mad about being told to take a nap. They decided to run away to hike out to grandma's house. LOL It wasn't discovered until hours and hours later.. went on a search. (plenty of black bear, puma, elk etc.. and 2 little boys). Eventually found them just at twilight tired and hungry.. but still determined. Their dad brought them back to camp and mom gave them a 'talk'. It was not an angry rant. It was more like: Where is your fire? Where are your knives? Where are your jackets? and etc.. Like if you are going to run away then next time you'd better be MORE PREPARED!!!!
