LYRICS:
Every time I think that I'm the only one who's lonely
Someone calls on me
And every now and then I spend my time in rhyme
And verse and curse those faults in me
And then along comes Mary
Does she want to give me kicks and be my steady chick
And give me pick of memo-ri-eeees
Or maybe rather gather tales of all the fails and tribulations
No one ever seeeeees
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup is as sweet as the punch
Boppa-do-wah
When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks
Whose sickness is the games they play
And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks
Make jokes as who is most to blame today
And then along comes Mary
Does she want to set them free and let them see reality
From where she got her na-a-ame
And will they struggle much when told that such a
Tender touch as hers - Makes them not the sa-a-ame
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup is as sweet as the punch
Boppa-do-wah - Boppa-do-wow
And when the morning of the warning's passed
The gassed and flaccid kids are flung across the stars
The psychodramas and the traumas gone
The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars
And then along comes Mary
Does she want to see the stains - The dead remains
Of all the things she left the night before-ore-ore
Or will those vacant eyes reflect the lies,
And make them realize - Their urgent cry for sight-no-more
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
Sweet as the punch.....
Sweet as the punch.....
Sweet as the punch.....
Sweet as the punch

Hey, thanks for posting this! I was the bass player in the band on this clip. I had the pleasure of working with the guys for 5 years. They still have the same drummer; Bruce Pictor [from san Diego]. I loved working with him. Solid driving groove monster, and beautiful sensitive rhythmic support on songs like Never My Love. To those posting about Jules, you're right. He absolutely nailed the lead vocal. This was taped at the ABC studios in Burbank in the Spring of 1988. Marilyn McCoo was the host. The other artists on that date were Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Great White, ABC, and the Desert Rose band, featuring Chris Hillman. I think I got that right. Feels like I might have left someone out. It's been awhile. :-} Again, thanks for posting. You brought back some really good memories.

Thanks for that great memory! Why did you leave such a great band? I hope your career has continued to prosper. One query; the vocals sounded unbelievable for a live performance. Were any enhancements made or did it really sound exactly like that? It always struck me as being a very awkward number to play at all, let alone absolutely nail it like they did on this show. Chris Hillman on the same show? Inspiring combination!

I met the guys after a show for autographs in 2008 and 2015. Literally prolly the nicest rock stars you’ll meet. No ego, no nothing. Which is one of the reasons why they are in my top 5 along with The Beach Boys, America, Chicago, Eagles.

IMO, the greatest American band during the '60s. Between 1968-1970, they outsold the Beatles in this country. But best of all was their on-stage professionalism and their vocal mastery. I saw them 2x in concert, and they were the best, most professional on-stage band I ever saw. Then add in the power they generated from 7 guys who could all sing, and sing well. They could fill an arena with vocal sound like no other band ever. People said, "They sound just like their records." No--they sounded *better* than their records. After you saw one of their concerts, you never forgot it. Listening to their records was a step back. While they were in their prime, they were one of the best vocal groups ever.

Wholeheartedly agree with you, Tim! I was lucky enough see them before their great bass player (and a heck of a nice guy) Brian Cole passed away. So fortunate that Brian's son Jordan was able to continue on for several years with the guys along with his fine keyboard playing and superb voice. A little side light here - when the guys played in our town at the university here (late 60's) my friend and I found out what motel they were staying at and we both waited outside their door to try and get an autograph or two. My very "nervy" friend got impatient and proceeded to bang on their door. I was more shy and reserved and thought they would tell him to get lost. To my utter shock - they invited him in and kept him entertained for some 20 minutes, signing autograph after autograph, allowing him to play their guitars, shook his hand, etc. while I waited outside like a fool! I could just scream! (and I did!) But they truly were amazing and most exciting to see in concert as you said.....Best Wishes to you......

1968 Hey Jude Its nine-week run at number one on the BillboardHot 100tied the all-time record in 1968 for the longest run at the top of the US charts. It has sold approximately eight million copies and is frequently included on music critics' lists of the greatest songs of all time. 1969 Get Back &* Something and Abbey Road I did not see anything in the top 100 in 68 or 69 for the Association www.cbsnews.com/news/the-beatles-by-the-numbers/ All told, the Beatles have sold 1.6 BILLION singles in the United States, and 177 million albums.

Their songs are still sounding great and not dated in the least. I wouldn't put them in the upper echelon occupied by those mop-topped lads from Liverpool, but The Association was super and they have a good hunk of my memory bank. I really loved "Everything That Touches You." It spoke to my teenaged brain.

The Association had so much "class" and even though they weren't as aggressive and "physical" on stage as other groups or performers - they could really get an audience "excited" very quickly!! As Tim H. mentioned - they sold tons of records, but the difference was - you continued to hear their Huge four hits everywhere you went for years and years!! And countless other great singers and performers thought so much of the likes of "Cherish", "Windy" and "Never My Love" - that they happily included them in their own records and performances! That says a lot!! Barry Manilow did a priceless version (released on CD) of "Cherish" and "Windy" blended together, with the Association members and full orchestra which is absolutely brilliant and most memorable.....but very hard to find. As Tim also said - "Once you saw the Association in concert, you weren't likely to forget that evening!" One reason for this is that they didn't do a large number of concerts in their heyday and those they did do were often "mysterious" - not known about until tickets were sold out or extremely hard to get, or the concert was not publicized enough because of intense competition from other groups and performers in the late 60's and early 70's. As a baby boomer - I tried and tried to see every great performer and group I could, when I was able, but the Association was so hot in their heyday - you really had to do your homework and be very diligent in your efforts to get to see them. In later concerts when they all wore their fabulous white suits and red carnations on stage - that was really something......those were the days, people.....!!! THANKS for all the wonderful times and great music, guys!!! and may the members who are no longer with us - always be remembered for their special "spark" they brought to the group.

Jules Alexander is such a superb vocalist and musician and songwriter. When I saw The Association in concert in1972, Mr. Alexander was great on guitar, performing “Requiem for the Masses” and on keyboards, performing “Kicking the Gong Around” with his fellow band mates. I’ve enjoyed so many of Mr. Alexander’s songs, including “Remember,” “Changes,” “You Hear Me Call Your Name,” “Dubuque Blues,” “Please Don’t Go (Round the Bend)” and the aforementioned “Kicking the Gong Around,” among several other of his songs. On “The Association Live” album, Jim Yester and Larry Ramos, Jr. sang lead on several of Jules Alexander’s songs. It was great to hear Mr. Alexander sing lead on “Along Comes Mary” on this video. I hope to see Mr. Alexander and his Association bandmates in concert this summer after this God-awful pandemic.

No, the story is that when he played on the song as a demo to be shopped around Jules recognized the hit potential in it and begged to take it back to the band. True, he left the band temporarily before it was cut(?) or before it became a hit. Still, he heard & played it first - and The Association would never have recorded it if not for him. I guess it's a kind of poetic justice that he got to sing it for a time in Jim Yester's absence... and yes, he certainly nailed in his own way!! Way to go Jules!!

You're right! This WAS a kick-ass version. I saw the Association in concert so many times, I lost count. Back in Spring of '81 there was some group touring with their name; didn't know it so we went. They were terrible and only did four Association songs. Then, during the break, I go up to one of the two guitarists, as he looked familiar. He said I did too! Then we realize were in competing bands in high school and my band (The Spectres) beat them silly. Of course, in 1969-1970, we were the only band in our town with two drummers, a keyboardist with a Hammond, a trumpet and a sax. Then in Fall of 1981, we had moved to Syracuse and the REAL Association came to play at the State Fair. After the concert, I spent some great time with Terry, talking about "those days." I see this video or some of the others and I miss that time so much, great music, simpler lives...Thank you all for sharing your music with us!

Where was Jim? This is such a great song, lyrics so complex and the rapid tempo. Jules knocked it out of the park. Mwahhh. 👄

Take a look at Jules singing Dubuque Blues, a fabulous song. Jules really should have sung more lead vocals imo.

Anyone who has ever smoked pot knows this song is about much more than merely smoking a joint ;)

Funny, I had no idea this song had anything at all to do with smoking pot.

I don’t remember where or what show they were on, but one of them said they were the first truly psychedelic band. My initial reaction was to chuckle, but then I thought about this song. Even though I had no idea what it was about, to me it was ahead of its time, on equal ground with any song from sergeant peppers. And very intellectual lyrics

Kick ass is correct. I'd say it easily competes with the original album version. Thanks for posting this!

This is a nice version. Very difficult song to sing live and they do a good job. Still love the original, but this band changed so much over the years it's nearly impossible to keep track of who did what.

Jules to Larry co-leads was dynamic, those two had tremendous chemistry while Jimmy had all the talent in the world on his own leads.
