These "reclaimed barnwood"/"racks" are also known as "tobacco sticks" or "tobacco laths". Five to seven stalks (plants) of burley tobacco were placed on each stick in late August using a sharp metal object called a "spud", then the stick with tobacco stalks was hung high in the barn over tier poles for drying. The stick was then removed from the barn around late November and leaves were seperated by color. This type of tobacco was typically grown in the mountains of east KY/east TN/western NC. "Flue cured" tobacco was grown elsewhere on flat land. Some of these burley sticks were reused yearly, for as long as 40-80 years if cared for well. With the government buyout of tobacco quota program and price support system in 2004, many of these sticks became completely unused. You've chosen (and did well - beautiful) a nice use for these leftover pieces of history.

Outstanding explanation! I didn't put the word tobacco in the description because I didn't want to anger the RU-vid gods 🙃

Nice job. I’d be interested to hear how the live edge holds up over time with use. 👍

What kind of wood are these made from?

Mostly Oak. Since oak is porous, they got sealed with the salad bowl finish by General Finishes
