@@Greeny1308 Artists associated w/ disco ("Dancing Queen" has always been their most popular song) were widely hated. Hence the demolition night in 1979.
One of the most complex songs of their early years, let alone of their entire catalogue. At least three or four songs in one masterful arrangement, foreshadowing Benny and Björn’s ambitions beyond the classic 3-minute pop song. Classic ABBA craftsmanship at its best.
The Beatles had a lot more songs but I get your drift, how important they are to music, from a Manc, hope we kick your scouse arse tomorrow in the FA cup ha ha
It has to be mentioned that US hip hoper Fugees sampled this for 'Rumble in the jungle"'96.Also according to some recent documentary this song's technic was used for studying by some of Max Martin's team, regarding the complication of its whole construction and esp the way both ladies used their voices. This is a legacy.
I love it when you discover a new ABBA song. I've been listening to them for over 40 years. They're a part of my heart and soul, and I wish everyone could feel the joy they give me.
This is a majestic song from a pretty much flawless album 'Abba - The Album' with no bad tracks, arguably their greatest opening track to the album 'Eagle' to again arguably their greatest closing track 'I'm a Marionette'. Utter brilliance!!
@@johnb8566 You should try some of the others, I mean they are all excellent but from Arrival through The Album and to The Visitors, they are all amazing. Maybe try The Visitors as there style was changing at that point and there are some stellar songs on there
Aww, that's so sweet. Have you seen Agnetha Fältskog's new videos? "Where Do We Go From Here?" and "Back On Your Radio"? These are animated videos. Maybe your great-niece will like them? Although the songs have a newer sound and cannot be compared to the oldies goldies by ABBA.
These ladies are beautiful with beautiful voices, and the gentlemen are brilliant musicians and songwriters. You can't go wrong with all those elements! This is my favorite song of theirs!
this song was number 1 in the UK for several weeks in late 1977, It stopped We Are Champions (with We Will Rock You on the B side!) by Queen getting to the top! I think Status Quo's Rocking All Over the World was kept down at number 3 by those two.
It's funny that I've never played 'Parcheesi', yet that was the first guess to pop into my head. I'm thinking that question must've come up in my past, and that was the answer I heard back then. 🤔 I've definitely played 'Sorry!'. I still have the original version from my youth in my closet. 😊
Another name for it was Spanish Ludo. I always knew it as Ludo in Australia. The games only really varied by how many dice you used. Ludo used 1 and Parcheesi used 2. But most of europe and the world knows it as Ludo.
"The name of the game" these is an extraordinary song by ABBA, which has many peculiarities: 1) I think it's the first in which each of the girls sings a verse as lead voice 2) the official video was recorded at the blonde Agnetha & blonde Björn's home, because Agnetha was very late in her second pregnancy (that's why maybe she's sitting and cared for in the picture) 3) "The name of the game" was released in October 1977, two month before "ABBA The Album" and the movie "ABBA The Movie" It was a bold gamble from ABBA, it opened their horizons and spread beyond pop. I think that "The name of the game" (1977) have some vibs of influences of BEATLES songs like "Penny Lane" or "Fool on the hill" (1967) curiosly, "The name of the game" was #1 in UK (4 weeks) and replaced in the #1 for "Mull of Kintyre" by Paul McCartney (ex-BEATLES member) "The name of the game" is in my opinion a masterpiece one of the Seven Wonders of ABBA (in chronological order): Waterloo S.O.S Dancing Queen The name of the game Chiquitita The winner takes it all Don't shut me down You have fantastic songs in "The Album" (1977) to react, ABBA's most versatile album: "Eagle" almost 6 minutes amazing Take a chance on me (the banger hit) "One man one woman" (beauty ballad) "Move on" (fantástic chorus) "Hole in your soul" (powerful rock) included a mini musical from 1977 Tour: "Thank you for the music" (ABBA hymn) "I wonder" (dramatic ballad) "I'm a marionette" (progresive rock) I hope to see you soon in more ABBA videos A big hug from Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷 South America PS: at the time of the official video (1977) the blonde singer Agnetha and the guitarist Björn was married since 1971, with one child in 1973 and in pregnancy of their second child (the only official video with Her pregnant) the brunette singer Frida and the bearded keyboardist Benny was engaged and living together since 1969 and married next year 1978
They obviously refer to the ”Game of love” in the lyrics, but the physical board game on the table is named ”Ludo” in England and ”Fia med knuff” in Sweden 😅
You are correct!! If I remember correctly from one of their interviews, this song was written at a time that there was beginning to be trouble in the romantic relationships in the group!
The game referred to is a growing relationship between a shy introverted woman and her therapist,. She's only visited him a few times, but he seems to completely understand her and 'see through' her - he can teach her a lot about herself - she's falling in love with him and asking if he can reciprocate - he can't do so because he is a professional - but she naively doesn't realise this restriction. (the game in the video is a red herring distraction)
Just as ABBA are the cream of the crop when it comes to musical acts, Jay & Amber are the cream of the crop when it comes to music reactions!! Both of you & ABBA are CLASS ACTS!!! Thanks again for your awesome reactions as well as the kindness you both radiate to all of your RSR Family!!☺
One song from ABBA catalogue I think is a "must check out" is ""Ring, Ring", because it was arguably their first song that had all the ABBA music ingredients intact. With this one they created the concept, that produced all the beloved hits.
Right - and most of us Swedes were shocked by the fact that 'Ring ring' did not win the Swedish song contest in 1973 and got to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the following year they participated with 'Waterloo' - and the rest is history.
For those of us around at the time in the UK, Abba were seen by young people as catchy singles, a bit cheesy and fun to dance to. However, now I am older I can appreciate just how wonderful, multi layered and interesting they were. These days, musicians are praised for changing chord and are mostly talntless and boring but in those days mega talents like Abba were commonplace.
ABBA is always a game changer. In 2021, after 40 years, ABBA released a new album Voyage. Their sound hasn't changed a bit. You can take any song for that album and put it on any of there past albums and it would fit right in. Definitely check it out.
The bass loop from this song was famously sampled by The Fugees in their song "Rumble In The Jungle". One of only two times that ABBA allowed their music to be sampled. The other was "Hung Up" by Madonna, which sampled "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)".
The structure of this song is amazing. If you sit down and listen to it you qucikly realize it's not the usual 'verse verse chorus verse brdige chorus....'.
You can throw a rock in the air over their discography and it will land on a classic. THOUGH - I cannot BELIEVE you haven't reacted to their most famous one yet - DANCING QUEEN!!
I may be in the minority, I am sure I am, but Dancing Queen is not one of my favorite songs by them. Nowhere near close. Am I completely alone in this ? Anyways, one of their biggest hits, so they surely do need to react to it.
No, you're not completely alone. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, the vocal range is amazing and the "third voice" is at the top of their game, but it doesn't quite grab me the way some other songs do. Having said that, it is their biggest hit and when the time comes it will be interesting to see the reaction. I'm guessing it will be recognized.@@aaradia
Winner takes it all, Super Trouper, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Dancing Queen, Voulez Vous, One of us, The day before you came, Does your mother know, Lay all your love on me... and so many more great hits. Don't know what you guys allready reacte to but for every mood you're in there is an ABBA song!
I can not believe that with all the ABBA songs y'all have done that you haven't done DANCING QUEEN yet!!! WTH?! That's the first song most people think of when you say ABBA!! It's their biggest most well known hit! Get on the ball y'all!!! 😮😊
ABBAs two main song voices are in most songs, Annifrid and Agneta...great in their own right but together their voice, together with the guys background voices,a super voice that nothing and noone else can match..please do more ABBA reactions..
The game they play in this video is Ludo, you 'll find details in wikipedia. It had many variations or brands (game of little horses in France for example). Very popular in europe by the 70ies. Love ABBA, listened a lot as a kid, it wasn't rock and roll, but it was sometimes so better ! The songs are still magic today, they feel like an old transmission from a eerie, romantic, happy (and sometimes sad), cool era. I have a "Feelgood playlist" on Dzer where among 50+ more tracks, you can find a bunch of ABBA songs. I will add this one, thank you to bring it back into the light.
Another masterpiece or 🅰️🅱️🅱️🅰️. In Chile that table game is called 'LUDO'. Always is a pleasure to see you, guys... Take care. Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱🤗👍
I grew up listening to ABBA and to say im a fan is an understatement!! I loved them before they became popular!! Now its so awesome to see younger people like you and Amber enjoying and being excited about their music. ❤😊
It's still a bit surreal sometimes. I sort of liked it when they weren't popular because it made me feel like they were my unique thing and that I didn't go along with the crowd. When friends would dismiss them as a "disco" band I knew that, sure they incorporated elements of disco but that they were so much more and felt a bit sorry for those friends in a "you don't know what you are missing" way. Fast forward to now and not only was I right at the time about how great they were, but they have stood the test of time in the way very few musicians have. As big a fan as I was and am - I didn't really expect that, yet I don't find it surprising. Amber explained it I think when she noted that you can't really assign their music a genre. They incorporated so much with such high production levels that most of it escapes sounding dated.
Really can't touch how magnificent the 1970s became. Multiple hit artists ABBA, BEE GEES, John Denver, Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Heart, Donna Summer, Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, The Carpenters, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Lynryrd Skynyrd, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Diana Ross, Barry White, Tom Jones, Kansas, America, Foreigner, Journey, Styx, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Marvin Gay, Black Sabbath, Elton John, The Who, The Guess Who, Jim Croce, The Doors, Anne Murray, Cher, KC & Sunshine Band, Sweat, Gordon Lightfoot, Meatloaf, etc.
I agree, so many artists had big careers in the 70s, you can easily pick the best artist of each decade, except for the 70s. There were just too many to choose from, in that decade.
I'm jealous!I nearly did.I was about to travel to Paris 1979 withy my older cousins but ma parents changed their minds last minute and didn't allow me cause i was too young. My cousins loved the concert.I sobbed hard that night.
...I am a metal guy, but ABBA...jeez, what an amazing group. All songs and music written by 2 men, and sung by 2 women that both have the voice of an angel...genius...kinda funny that in my collection, that is arranged alphabetically...it goes ABBA, then Black Sabbath
This is my ABSOLUTE favorite ABBA song!! I am a retired music educator and I wanted to do an arrangement of this song with my Sixth Grade Choir, but I let time get away from me. WONDERFUL song!!!
Congratulations at arriving at about a quarter down the ABBA rabbit hole! For variety (mix of hits, deep dives, dark period, different genre, etc.) i suggest the following: "Super Trouper", "Eagle", "Hole in Your Soul", "The Visitors", "Lay All Your Love on Me", "The Piper", "Move On", "If it Wasn't for the Nights"..."Dancing Queen" I guess at some point, if you must...
Both girls have such beautiful voices but when they sing in harmony it takes it to another level. Try listening to 'Thank you for the music'. One of their best in my opinion.
As you know after 40 years ABBA came back with the "Journey" The one song that stands out is "I still have Faith in You" A combination Ballad and Anthem style masterpiece that states the feeling of getting back together and putting out more music. As the song is song and the video plays you realize that it is the pinnacle of a simply yet unbeatable combination of video, vocal, and emotional elements. It brings the ABBA journey full circle. It is the story of ABBA getting together, stardom, heart ache, break up, lasting friendship, and here we are back together again.
You still have only scratched the surface. They did glam rock, show tune, reggae, psychedelic, disco and about every other genre. And did them all to perfection. The girls even took a year (they wanted the pronunciations perfect) to do a Spanish album of their hits. It was/is a huge seller. Every member is hugely talented and their all perfectionist.
One of my all-time faves!! I literally grew up listening to ABBA and pretty much know all their songs by heart. Their songs are timeless! Did you know at one point the four were two couples? Benny (the bearded one) and Anni-Frid (the redhead), and Bjorn and Agnetha. This band is really worth a deep dive into their career.
Such a great song, so mellow and sophisticated. The whole album ('ABBA The Album') is wonderful. I can't remember if you've reacted to Thank You For The Music, but it's glorious - ABBA's mission statement!
I had just turned 15 when this song first became a hit and I was just mesmerized and enthralled with it, truly unique,. Truly the first song that I so noticed, respected and honored the composition, the arrangement, the layered sonic differences and of course the harmonies. Total awe and admiration for this group ABBA.
Just in case you’ve wondered why ABBA had so many actual music videos back in the ‘70s, even the early ‘70s, when other groups didn’t (or at least very rarely): Because of their physical location in Sweden, and because Sweden wasn’t known as a mass producer of popular music on the worldwide stage, it was extremely hard for Swedish groups to get noticed, so they quite literally pioneered the use of music videos as a marketing tool. Obviously, it was long before MTV and long before the artistic, high-budget, polished videos we see now. Some of their videos are very simple, some more intricate, some downright silly - but it’s how they were able to reach out to the world in a way no one else had ever accomplished. It was a novel way they could export their look and sound to countries around the world, far from the isolation of Sweden, and get noticed and grow their brand-and it worked. They really deserve much of the credit for pioneering something that’s taken for granted today!
Thank you Jay & Amber for reacting to all these ABBA songs in such an entertaining, cheerful & positive way. I've been a big fan of ABBA ever since "Waterloo" - which introduced ABBA to the World. I was 13 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton England in 1974, I'm 62 now and watching your positive reactions to all these songs which have accompanied me during my life was lovely & delightful to witness. I congratulate you both for recognizing how talented these 4 Swedes are. Your happy reactions to each song was like an ABBA song itself. Thank you so much for making my Saturday morning get off to a happy, cheery & positive note! 😊👍
Probably shot on film. The video was directed by Lasse Hallström, who also wrote and directed "ABBA: The Movie", the film for which the song was written. The movie itself was shot in 35mm Panavision, although originally intended to be 16mm. I assume this video was in 16mm, also.
Listen to ABBA's "Does Your mother know?" Also "The Honeycombs" -Have I the Right" Honey Lantree is their female drummer. I forgot to mention "Love Is All Around" and "Wild Thing" by The Troggs adding this song: "Why did it have to be me?" sung by Anni-Frid Lynstad and Bjorn Ulvaeus(2 members of ABBA)
"Have I the Right" was a great pop hit for them with a great back beat provided by Lantree, probably the only female drummer from the British Invasion bands.
During the video, the four members of the group are shown playing the board game "Fia-spel", the Scandinavian version of the German board game "Mensch ärgere dich nicht", which is a variation of the English board game Ludo and American Parcheesi.
This is one of the best songs in pop history. It was huge back in the days, but far too few people have rediscovered it. Thanks for reacting to it, love it!
HI GUYS GREETINGS FROM ENGLAND 🇬🇧 AND YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE ABBA SONG 🎵" " THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME" THIS WAS ONE OF THERE FINAL RECORDINGS BEFORE THEY SPLIT UP AS A GROUP AND ITS SUCH A GREAT SONG AND IS SO DIFFERENT TO ALL THERE OTHER SONGS
I was a young teen when Abba was big , unfortunately for me and the crowd I hung with , it was not cool to acknowledge Abba , but damn they were off the chart !!
"The Album" for me it is still the most experimental Abba Album. Different from the other Albums in many ways and, as always, ahead of their time. As long as I live, this will be one of my favourite Albums of all times. Thanks for reacting to this piece.
So true. - Always Good!!! Such harmonies!! “Dancing Queen” next, please! The grounds crew for the Reading Phillies dress in drag when they ‘drag’ the infield between innings while “Dancing Queen” is blasted over the stadium sound system!! Hilarious!!
@spells1389 must have been early on in their channel. I’ve been a member for 2 years but I don’t remember it and don’t see it in their abba history. Taken down?
@@stevehatton-bw3bo Did you do a search for "Rob Squad Reactions Dancing Queen"? Typing the channel name + song title into the RU-vid search bar is the fastest way to check.
I had to google it because I didn't know. The game they were playing in the video is the Swedish version of Ludo known as Fia-Spel. I don't know what Ludo is either, but it looked a lot like a marbles board game we played when I was a kid. Of course, in the song, "name of the game" is figurative, asking the person being sung to "what are your true intentions in this relationship with me?" Such a beautiful song! Love ABBA! :)
Speaking as an old fart 63yr old Brit, I love you guys discovering what I loved in my youth. ABBA are indeed timelessly brilliant! Mad to think that if you loved them at the time, you were made to feel embarrassed or shamed. Now those who wanted that, are now the truly embarrassed and shamed! And you two lovely, brilliant, youthful people from the States prove it. So thank you Rob Squad. You're a great couple!
As a total metalhead, Abba music is perfection. They knew how to write, produce, perform, ... music to such a high degree, that if you don't like Abba then you do not like music.
