One quote from Schumacher during interview when he was asked "what will you do after retirement?". He answered: go to America, live peacefully until I turn old and fat because nobody knows who I am there.

- Races per year: In Schumacher's days, it was 16-18 on average. Now we're beyond 20 races per season, so Hamilton has it a bit easier racking up wins. - How many gears: Back in 1994, they had 6 gears, so Schumacher was stuck in the second-highest gear. Which means he lost top speed as well as momentum out of slow corners. It's just incredible he could be that fast with that handicap. Since the start of the 2014 season, we're up to 8 gears. - 3 stops in Hungary 1998: To put that into context, in those days drivers would usually make either one or two pit stops per race to refuel and change tyres. Depending on parameters like fuel burn, tyre degradation and the lap time penalty for every additional pound of fuel, which all vary from track to track. Hungary was usually a two-stopper, as far as I remember. But it was near impossible to overtake on that track. So here's what the Ferrari strategists did, they essentially told Schumacher: "OK, we're gonna make a short stop with less refuelling to get you out of traffic. You'll have a clear track ahead of you, fresh tyres and a relatively light car. But you'll have to use that to pull out a 25 second gap, because you'll have to make an additional stop in the end. So, just drive every lap like in qualifying and push 100%." And that's exactly what Schumacher did. He pulled out the gap to make the extra stop and won the race.

Schumacher would have had a lot more wins but he moved to Ferrari who hadn't won a championship for 16 years. It took him 4 years of hard work to get them back to being a championship team. So unlike Lewis Hamilton ( who only drives the best cars) Micheal won 2 championships with a lowly Benneton and then rebuilt Ferrari ( actually spent just as much time with mechanics working on car) and helped them become a top team before winning 5 championships on the bounce.

the best moment from all of this happened in the press conference after the race where he was stuck in 5 gear. hulll thought he beat schumacher fairly with his tallent and drivnt abuility. he was delighted to beat his main rival until the reporter asked michael about the issue and hill realised that schumi still got second despite the major issue. it was crazy skill to drive that car around those slow bends and to do a pit stop. it is things like this that makes schumi the GOAT. you would never see any of the current drivers doing most of a race stuck in gear or doing qualli laps for the whole race.

The difference between Schumacher’s record and now Hamilton beating it - Hamilton has done it by being one of the best drivers in the best car / team. Schumacher moved to Ferrari when they were the worst and hadn’t won anything for ages, then spending several years working with the team to make it great again, bringing it back from the dead. This is why for Me Schumacher is the greatest - better than Senna or Hamilton - not only was he a true champion, but he set himself up with an impossible task with Ferrari and made it work. Michael had input on Lewis's car prior to retirement as well I believe. Michael always the greatest for me!
@leampunkt3678
@leampunkt3678 2 года назад
Michael is THE GOAT of F1. He revolutionized the sport. While racers of today start their profesional career as teenagers, Michael finished his training as amechanic in a little garage near in his home town. Sheer talent and dedication brought him sponors, that then brought him into the profesional classes as a racer. He challenged the "old school" racers with his dynamic and athletic body. He was the first to realize, that physical strength gives you an advantage and saves energy for your mental strength. Nowadays every little part of the car is equipped with sensors. While racing, the mechanic team can check and change every little detail. Back then the drivers had rely on their own feeling and knowledge way more and Michael was an outstanding genius, when it came to that. He was able to race and pace at a 100%, yet still had energy left to focus on the track, the tires, the opponent tires, the strategy etc. He was the first driver, who wanted to be compleltely involved in every part of the sport. From car development, mechanics, simulations etc. He knew it all. He was 100% dedicated. He gave it all. He wanted to race and win and sometimes that energy pushed him too far. He was the best F1 driver ever and no matter how many records Lewis broke, he wont change that. Lewis is a great driver, but his records only go down to the fact, that Mercedes was unbeatable and unreachable for consecutive years, which made the sport really boring, as we didnt see real racing anymore. Fun fact: in 2010 Mercedes-AMG was founded and they premiered in F1. Mercedes put a hell of money into their racing team and they made Michael come back from his retirement. They needed his expertise as a driver. He helped develop the cars, In just 3 years, they became the leading team and Michael had a main part in this according to Ross Brawn. So Lewis being where he is today, goes all back to Michael. The irony of that.

When assessing the number of wins Schumacher has in comparison to Hamilton, you have to always bear in mind that at the top of his game and in one of the best cars, he decided to move to drive for Ferrari at a time when Ferraris car was terrible. He eventually won Ferrari their first Drivers Championship in 21 years, his primary goal when joining the team.

8:40 "Back when cigarettes were sponsoring motorsports" Philip Morris International (Marlboro) never stopped. They signed a (off the top of my head, so it might be a slightly different number of years) 12 year sponsorship deal with Ferrari the year before the ban on tobacco sponsorship came in for Europe (2006, I think). Back then they tried a few things to keep Marlboro fresh in spectators minds, even though they couldn't put the Marlboro name on the car. The white stripe barcode on the Ferrari livery is the most well known. PMI sponsors Ferrari to this day. Albeit that now they are doing it under the name Mission Winnow (with a logo clearly meant to be reminiscent of the Marlboro chevron). Ferrari aren't the only team getting tobacco money though, McLaren has a sponsorship deal with British American Tobacco. They are also sponsoring McLaren's Indycar team. It's not just four wheels. PMI sponsors Ducati's MotoGP team through the Mission Winnow brand. Imperial Tobacco sponsors the Suzuki MotoGP team, and Yamaha's Superbike World Championship team. It isn't just teams, PMI sponsors the whole MotoGP series through their Mission Winnow branding. Tobacco companies never stopped sponsoring motorsports... They just recently, in the last 10 years uped that to 19 to 22 races in a notmal season. Hamilton raced primarily in those years and had a car that was modt of the time way to good for the other drivers to catch him. And Schumi had a few rough years when he helped Ferrari to get back to championship winning level.

The race at Hungary 1998 was something else. No one ever before or ever since has done 28 consecutive qualifying laps and probably no one will ever do it again. I remember reading a detailed brake-up of the race in the following week where all kinds of engineers explained how this was on the very edge of what was technically and physically possible, not only for the tires, but the car itself. Small wonder then it's put up right next to the still unbeatable legend - the F2004. As for Schumi - i don't think there is anything to be added. For me he is the God of Formula 1. He is the only driver who did the impossible - get from a winning team into a back trailing one and leading them to total domination, which made FIA change the sport for life.

There is a movie about Nikki Lauda. "Rush" with Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl. Brühl played Lauda so that you would think he was Lauda. It's a good film that shows how F1 works, how Lauda makes Ferrari competitive and how the driver, team and designer have to work together to win. The accident can also be seen there, as the Ferrari 312T2 crashes into a rock face, skids down the roadway and bursts into flames. Since there were no rescue workers at the site, some F1 drivers stopped and tried to rescue him from the flames since there were no rescue workers at the spot, some F1 drivers stopped and tried to pull him out of the flames, which they only managed to do after more than 30 seconds. In addition to the burns, he also suffered chemical burns to the lungs and fell into a coma, and was expected to succumb to the injuries. Amazingly, just 42 days later, with unhealed burns, he drove the Italian Grand Prix after missing two races and finished the season in 2nd place against James Hunt.

There is something else that makes Schumacher great: he was the first driver that did lots of sports, didn't smoke, drink or party (or, you know, hardly). He was the first one that was in the factory every day to make the car better. In those days, it was still allowed to drive the car every day and Ferrari of course has a race track near the factory. Now, all F1 drivers have the topsport lifestyle, but it didn't use to be so.

Ayrton Senna is still THE GOAT of F1. If he didn't tragically died in Imola who knows what would have been his final achievement at retirement. As for Michael Schumacher, he was "boring" to watch 'cause you know that eventually he'll win😂. But he was not just a F1 pilot, he was also integral part of his mechanical team. He was involved in developing of Ferrari engine for F1, just like Nikki Lauda was 20 years before. Irony of life, you risk life in every race, and in retirement went to skiing, fall on head and now you're in coma.

A good analogy would be that Michael Schumacher was to F1 what Michael Jordan was to the NBA. A very long and very successful career, nearly unmatched talent, and - oddly enough - they both came back from retirement once. He wasn't simply (one of) the greatest F1 driver of all time, he was basically the synonym of racing at the time both inside and outside F1. If someone was speeding, people would yell "Who do you think you are, Schumacher?!", even if they weren't following the sport. His GOAT status is a topic of arguments to this day, but he was undoubtedly the most iconic racer of all time.

Current regulations say you must have eight forward and one reverse gear and remember the teams change the gears to suit each particular venue As to who is the greatest there has been endless discussion for many many decades Some still say Fangio was the greatest even though he did far fewer races than present drivers many people put Senna as the greatest of all time. despite him sometimes acting very “unsportingly “ to ensure a win as did Michael. Others say Jim Clark was the greatest overall driver with a very smooth style. And in England many people still claim Stirling Moss should always be included in the list as the greatest driver who didn’t win the world championship as he came second four times and third three times partly because he insisted on driving inferior British cars all too often. Then we have Lewis Hamilton who has won the world championship seven times and is still in contention this year I think is a great driver despite his flaws. You can discuss all night which comes first the car or the driver I always reply. if I was a race horse owner I’m not going to employ some third-rate jockey no ones ever heard of to ride it. I will employ the best rider I can find and so it goes with racing cars but it’s a long hard road to even get a ride in an F1 let alone be taken on by a top team. Instead of calling them goats I prefer to use the phrase one of the all-time greats. Coming back to Michael no question he was a great driver when he went to Ferrari they hadnt won for 52 races and he took them forward and won many world Championships with them. Then people said he only won because he had the best car -well it is well known he was fanatical about getting involved in the engineering and testing so he partly created the cars that he drove to victory. (It’s incredibly sad that Michael was so seriously injured in his accident while skiing and I wish him the very best of luck. ). Of course as with most things in life Chance plays an important role. who you get in your team of engineers and managers. Some of the big teams employ nearly 1000 people. And sometimes it even comes down to who is in the team that changes the wheels during the race it’s common to have a fresh set of wheels put on in under three seconds and if there’s any mistake you can lose the race just on that alone. Every second counts and sometimes even every one 10th of a second. Which team you end up being signed with is very important. Ferrari is a great name in F1 but for several years they have not had much success and I don’t know why but I think it’s ultimately down to the management. Because to use a good old American expression that’s where the buck stops. I have followed Lewis Hamilton from when he was a young guy new to F1 And have always admired him for being what we call a Racer. He has always been willing to take risks to go out there and try to win sometimes it comes off and sometimes it doesn’t but he is never happy just to plod along holding position. Sadly he is beginning to get a bit old now. (36 ! ). But who can argue with his record-breaking stats of 100 GP wins 101 poles and 137 podiums The one to watch now is Max Verstappen who is currently ahead of Lewis in the 2021 season. For sure I think he has a big future and there are a couple of other young guys who show great promise. One last thing I want to say unfortunately they have abandoned the golden era of 2 1/2 or 3 Litre engines and now we’re down to 1.6 L. With amazing technology these still give 800 or 900 hp but they don’t sound good and the sound was a very important element of the excitement of F1. That’s why I will never watch electric cars racing because they just don’t sound exciting. More like a bunch of tuned up Ford Fiestas. Every year I tell myself I’m not gonna watch F1 anymore it’s just a procession but this year has been particularly good and as ever I have watched every race. I am no expert I’m just one of the multi millions who get caught up in the magic of F1 and long may it continue. With good management I think it has a great future

All kinds of technologies were pioneered by F1 teams. The sport is hugely expensive to run, but it has all these spin-off benefits for the automobile industry. One of the facts I learned which surprised me is that race car engineering is dominated by British engineers, and making and maintaining formula racing cars is a major source of export earnings for the UK. It's surprising because the UK lost practically all of its car manufacturers to German and Japanese competition, and part of the problem was a shortage of investment in teaching and employing engineers, as in the degree courses in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or Aerospace Engineering, why not). We had had huge engineering industries serving the British railways etc, but that was part of the mass cull of industrial firms under Mrs Thatcher. It turns out the Engineering graduates and skilled technicians we do have are still able to dominate a field like F1, which is so high end.

To give u some more insight: Schumacher won his first 2 drivers Championships with benetton in 94 & 95 after he switched to them in 92 from his first qualy Outing in 91 when his clutch broke. Ferrari at that time was still a legendary team but for 2 decades utterly uncompetitive and completly unstructured with a lot of hierarchy and impact from the outside. So the Ferrari wasn't competitive at all in normal conditions in 96 (see his No.1 Drive in this Video). Yet Schumacher managed to drive it around at times like over 3.5 SECONDS per lap quicker than anyone else in the entire field to catch up to first and eventually win the race in dominant fashion. What is even more remarkable is his whole being in formula1: He switched to Ferrari simply because he wanted to, managing to get the uncompetitive Ferrari Team in the following years to the best team out there with 5 conecutive titles. He put in countless hours of work until deep into the night in the garage with his engineers, millions of miles on testtracks to pur everything out of the car and got a whole Ferrari team (not to mention the whole italian country) behind him where he knew EVERY name and EVERY personal status of his engineers until the retirement of 2006.

For context on Spain 1996, which is probobly one of the greatest F1 drives ever. The cars in F1, are not made equal. They're part of a constructors championship, which is a competition between F1 engineers to built the best car. Some times, a team is gonna nail the concept of their car, resulting in having much superior machinery to anyone else and be the only team to regurarlly compete for the win. We call this seasonal dominance. 1996 was part of 90s Williams dominance streak, where almost half of the decade was dominated by Williams F1 team thanks to their legendary engineer and aerodynamicist Adrian Newey (who is still active in F1 and works for Red Bull Racing) The Williams FW18 at that stage of the season was almost a second ahead in terms of both qualifying pace and race pace then next fastest car, which arguably was Benetton B196 while Ferrari was a struggling shitbox. Before Spain and extraordinary race at Monaco, which saw only 3 cars cross the finish line Williams won 5 races in a row, with no one being able to compete with them on raw pace alone. The reason Michaels victory is so great is because he took the challange to a guys in a car, that just one day earlier outqualified him by nearly a second and finnished 48 seconds ahead of closest Williams. Dominated the race in sub-par machinery with skill.

to put the 91 wins in to prespective, here is the top 10 all time, the second figure is the percentage of wins to races, Prost Mansel and Senna did 16 races a year 8 9 and 10 would have done fewer and today they do 20 or more, Schumacher would have spent most of his time on 16 races a year. Anyway it appears Hamilton has the better win ratio, but probably has the most reliable car of all time, although Shumi would have had good reliability for most part. Now below that only about half the cars finished the race and probably even less in Jim Clarkes day, Jim Clarke IMO is the GOAT and is still highly respected today, he also raced everything and won the INDY500, he was the most naturally gifted of them all. Since the late 80's teams have had spells of domination with the best car in the field, before that a number of teams would be competative each season. In fact Keke Rosberg won the World Championship by winning only one race back in the early 80's 1 HAMILTON Lewis 100 35.34 2 SCHUMACHER Michael 91 29.64 3 VETTEL Sebastian 53 19.34 4 PROST Alain 51 25.63 5 SENNA Ayrton 41 25.47 6 ALONSO Fernando 32 9.73 7 MANSELL Nigel 31 16.58 8 STEWART Jackie 27 27.27 9 CLARK Jim 25 34.72 10 LAUDA Niki 25 14.62

@@diogomelo7897 really, if you put their records side by side, seasons with competetive and none competative cars are pretty much the same. His last 4 years at McLaren, his car could win a race or two but it was not a championship winner, then a season with a average Mercedes. We can add into that, that Schumacher probably only had 3 seasons where his team mate could actually race him. I really do not buy the team orders for Lewis arbument, Rosberg could race him, Bottas is just not capable of racing him.

Schumis teammates just couldnt beat him. They were good drivers as well, irvine with better luck would have been champ, and Barrechello beat both Irvine and button as teamates (button beat lewis overall at mclarn BTW) and Massa took Hamilton to the end, and likley wouldve been champ whithout crashgate.
