Hey Biffa, I have a city which is quite good but I have a massive problem in trafik and I tried weeks to fix it: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1806037821 Would be awsome if you could show me how to fix it
There was a lot of "bigger roads don't necessarily help traffic flow" in today's lesson. If you didn't believe it, this would show you. 👍👍👍 Great vid, Biffa! Love the final cinematic.
Same lol. I didn't even play the game, but one of his videos popped up in my recommended. I subbed and watched his videos for over a week before i ended up buying the game.
There were so many lane management problems you didn't touch, no doubt because of wanting to fix as much as possible with the lightest touch. I can see why now, that flyover at the end was absolutely brilliant showing how little you changed and how much the traffic improved.
Tell people to stop using 6 lane one ways. They usually don't help at all but rather make everything worse, especially with roundabouts. They also make the city look quite bad, if they are spammed around for so many roads.
Love how you are consistent with your main tips and you can clearly see the results! 1. Lane Mathematics - simple and highly impactful 2. Round-a-bouts - helps the flow 3. There is always time to relax and sip some tea!
6. Alternate types of transport that take vehicles off the roads (foot, metro, train, ferry, maglev, etc) - buses can help, if used right since they compress road vehicles down from dozens into few, ditto trams 7. Extra road soaks for heavy cargo areas
He needs to change almost all the 6 lane one way roads to 4 lane 2 way and ha,f the roundabouts aren’t needed. The traffic has to drive so much further to get anywhere in the city that it’s artificially increases the traffic. One way everywhere with 6 lanes everywhere doesnt work people.... and biffa sticks a 2 lane roundabout at the end... lane mathematics lol
I was driving home and yelled at someone to "quit chauka blockin and horky borky lane switching and go straight on through". He was trying to give me the old jiggery-pokery.. oh my goodness me!
"Sometimes the solution to traffic isn't just roundabouts…" I BEG YOUR PARDON? *monocle falls from face* "…it's roundabouts, and metro, and…" Ah, good show, do carry on.
Most European cities have junctions that are relatively close, but they still have smooth traffic. Here’s how: 1. Roundabouts: They help smooth traffic 2. Pedestrian roads(e.g promenades) and paths: Most cities have pedestrian dedicated roads(yes, the zonable ones you get from Network Extensions) and paths providing short routes to commercial/office zones. 3. Public Transportation: Public transportation is virtually everywhere in most cities in Europe. Whether it’s buses, metro, tram or commuter rail (trains in Cities: Skylines), there’s always at least one mode of public transportation Limited Parking Spaces: This forces most citizens to rely on public transportation instead of cars, improving traffic flow. However, this is a very brilliant fix, especially for American cities (they depend on private cars). If you’re working on a European city though, you’ll need to take public transportation as a big part of your traffic fix since European cities depend on public transportation instead of private cars.
@@Yanate1991beeecause we're not suffering through traffic jams and have readily available public transportation? Sureeee it has nothing to do with certain USA politics bleeding into and poisoning European mindsets 🙄
@@Yanate1991 Europe has growing far-right because capitalism has been in an unresolved crisis since 2007/8. If anything the superior access to public transport (relative to the USA) is a moderating factor because of how much it improves quality of life.
I love how you've added cinematic looks of the before and after, sometimes I wish you would nuke *certain* areas of the city but I know you're just trying to help the people who built it to understand what went wrong!
Biffa, you are right! - The opposite sense of rotation or revolution is (in North American English) counterclockwise (CCW) or (in Commonwealth English) anticlockwise (ACW)
This somehow popped up on my RU-vid feed, and I'd actually quit playing this game because the traffic seemed impossible. You really did a good job of breaking down somewhat unintuitive traffic problems and fixes -- I immediately redownloaded the game on Steam and am excited to play again. Thanks for this content!
I think the city was originaly built without the infinite money and he converted it so that he can add what he wants without precautions and having to wait for income, or it has been built with infinite money and he wants to add realism.
I've heard that tolls make only traffic that needs to enter the city go through the city roads, as without them, traffic that just wants to pass through the map may go through the city as a "shortcut" however only makes city traffic worse. Toll booths filter this traffic.
Holy heck, i've never seen this channel before but you've earned yourself a subscriber. I could not figure out my city's traffic problems at all. But making all of these small changes that you showed has gotten my trafficflow up to 70% instead of the usual 10. Thank you!
@@baileyyordnoff2409 he doesn't mean that. what he means is this: take a stretch of road, let's say a 2 lane with trees, and change one part of road into a different kind of road, let's say 2 lane with grass. at the beginning and ending of the 2 lane with grass, there will be pedestrian crossings
@@jez0rvonnazaroth619 I realize that, but a more aesthetically pleasing way that he's done in the past is use the Crossings mod to make a mid-block crossing without odd intersections or changing road types.
@@baileyyordnoff2409 He could use street without trees or with trees on the sides and it would look more realistic. Crossing part of the street should be different because of the safety and car slowing...
This city in a nutshell : - Big roads when not needed - Junctions too close to each other - Lack of true main roads in some places - Bad lane mathematics inside the city (six lane one way going into 2 lanes...)
Some cities I'm honestly not sure how people build them so badly. They seem to think that using 6 lane one-way roads constantly is good. And then look at 27:05. Was it really so difficult to put in a nice curved road from one junction to the next?
@@danielsanders6959 as a ps4 cities skylines player: *YES* really wish i had a pc to make this stuff but no, just road after road being filled with traffic
I've watched a few traffic management videos but this is definitely the easiest one to understand for a quick fix. the traffic in this game actually kind of ruined the game for me for a bit, but now I'm ready to give it another go. thanks for the vid!
18:30, there is something at the next junction, there was no need for such a big roundabout. And by the way for the city: Six Lane Roundabouts are way to much lanes, Jesus.
Hey biffa, One thing I would really like you to teach. In addition to the usuall lane mathematics and roundabout managemen, their is the important notion of lane Hierarchy. You want one main streat to run straight through the districts, with a limitied number of collecting roads connected to it, in order to limit congestion. And to these collecting roads you can have local streats spreading around, but not directly connected to the main artherials. That kind of design allows to build districts not fully made of super big streets (one 6 lane artherial connected to the highway, with a few 4 lanes collecting roads attached to it, and then you can spread the local 2 lane streats).
Love your vids, biffa! Cheers. I'm looking forward to more CS vids that dont just focus on traffic. Lord knows how you get office blocks to level 5, for example. :)
This before/after cinematic looks incredible. The good thing about the small cities is that small changes boost the traffic instantly. Metro is a must ALWAYS. Your tips about lane mathematics really do help Biffa, thanks a lot for this video.
quad prong metro / light rail off a main shared track city centre would have been best metro wise i think. I come from TpF2 so maybe i'm missing a reason why this wouldnt work in CS. title is reallyyy good as it applies to people wanting to fix as well as people looking for satisfying gameplay, great job.
Found your videos a couple weeks ago. Been binge watching. Love these videos Biffa! I have been itching to get this game on PC. Not the same on console. Definitely learning good tips and tricks!
Same here! I never actually was much for this type of videos, but I just love the way Biffa plays the game, and fixes traffic. I actually started a new game because of it. I hadn't played in a long wile, because I was always so annoyed withe the f...ing traffic. Now I now how to avoid it. ( Most of the time ;-))
Can't believe I sit and watch half hour long vids for a game that I don't even play ... yet. So satisfying Biffa! Love your fixes and how you just do it so easily. Plus, props for tea breaks.
yes. Very good. Remember, when there is another Steam sale, don't buy/use the DLC all at once. Mass Transit is #1.. but after that, ease into it. Grasp the base game.. then add gradually.
Did a lot of motorway (Freeway) driving the other day. Thought about lane mathematics in real life. Why don't road builders do it? Some junctions have it (UK) and it's lovely not having to force your way into traffic before the filter lane runs out.
because when a line suddenly vanishes off to the side into some village isn't that great of an idea?^^ inbetween the on- and offramp you are forcing traffic into the remaining lanes which might not be enought and when all the trucks suddenly have to move over one lane thats quite horkyborky^^
Because humans are smarter than the AI - as hard as that is to believe when you're on the road. Lane mathematics is just a simple way to force an unthinking AI (or person) to behave in a specific way. In real life, the extra lane after the exit will still actually get used properly as a buffer in cases of heavier traffic.
The huge toll roads are rather too much for the game AI, they won't really use the full size anyways so it's always better to use the toll roads with the same lane count as the road you putting it on. Also making sure the automatic toll roads thing will help out a lot to speed things up a bit. The ideal location I use is where the highways come in to your city meaning the very outer limits. This keeps the traffic to a minimum but the downside is that you need to make sure electricity and water is available which may cost you a lot to even add it in.
You did a good job on this one indeed. Comes to show once more that bigger roads do not mean a better flow :) It is funny that I often in spare time after work rather watch you fix cities than to play the game myself. (although I intend to play it myself again of course ^^)
I really liked the before and after effect you did at the end. Shows what you changed and what the traffic was like before. Super neat. Also love the time lapse of busy interchanges. Relaxing to watch the cars.
I love the idea of fixing a big issue like this, because it really shows how good someone is at something. My only issue is, it's easy to fix a city's issue when you have an infinite budget. Great vid tho
"Lane mathematics" Stuff we actually see in many highway systems, considering these sort of thing is very similar to IRL system in the UK, so you just need to drive around the country to see it. Also, Euro Truck Simulator 2 seems to be somewhat realistic besides the distance/time compression to experience the roads in Europe. So you can "experience" in a fun way (better then Google Street View voyeuring).
Why do you never Check where People actually want to go . You allready got this tool so you can click on Streets and Check where People wants to go on that stretch of Road. I now fix Citys like that in moments.Still enjoy your Videos tho :)
I propose you just annoy everyone equally and start saying "sunwise" and "counter sunwise". Anyone who asks what that means, just say "Get a sundial, you fool!"
while driving in Hawaii. I always think of lane mathematics. And the Hawaii road planners apparently do not know math. Which is why it can take over an hour to go 15 miles
Crypto is like water, it flows up the currents, or the down currents ,it settles in tranquile lakes, or fiercely rains down cliffs, forming spectacular waterfalls, at the eh of a rainbow. So, think crypto as water, my friend, and hydrate.
Hey Biffa I only drink coffee while playing cause I don't like tea, is that why I keep getting gridlocked? Damn that sweeping camera over the city comparing before & after is great, are you planning on doing that for all fix it videos?
Keep saying anti-clockwise, fella! Counter-clockwise is just an Americanism and the people trying to correct you just have no idea how the English language works. Might be nice to remind them the language is called 'English', not 'American', and a quick Google search will show them that anti-clockwise is a perfectly acceptable term. Keep up the great work!
Biffa... great video as always! At 4:20, you add a side street by a train station to create a crosswalk. Why not just swap one small section of the existing roadway for one, say, with grass instead of trees. That would do the trick and allow you to place the walk directly in front of the station or the path coming from the Metro. 😊
One suggestion, for roundabouts which are embedded in the city grid, you can reuse the grid and make one connection one-way into the roundabout, and one connection one-way out of it. Like the one at 23:18 and it again at 24:14, this would separate flows in and out of it.
Nice fix but there was a roundabout connection that you said you wanted to add a two lane road but never did. It was the area where you had that diagonal road connection near the roundabout and you removed it.
Hi Biffa, I love your videos. It's the reason I got into the game. I did my first city and I went chasing Unique Buildings. I needed vacant buildings and messed around with too many things and i went from near 200k to 11k population. Want to try and salvage this one? Could be a great challenge, lol. Obviously I have a backup save that enabled me to continue building the city but thought you might want to give it a try.
people have been trying to fix my city (york) for years, I was a taxi driver in it, friend a bus driver, more road hours than most in it and even we dont have answers, except dual the ringroad.... its a compact city with narrow roads, doesnt help
It's a shame they don't have an underground path mod from metro stop to stop versus going up to the surface and back down? It looks like there's Multi-route transition stops available, maybe a multi-access stop between two or more close by stops (going down, then in direction to intended stop), would be good?
Always enjoy watching your city fix videos... and that you have went to more than just adding those dang ugly circles, that take up so much room... yea I dislike roundabouts, IRL and in game. Watching you add unneeded roundabouts, when traffic just wants to make a simple turn, always inspires me to come up with other solutions. Traffic management is not just about flow, which in a 20,000 city is quite easy to get to 90%...It is about getting people to their destination. I used to be lazy with metro, and just build the metro loops, like you did in this video. I have found with experimentation in the same city, that the hub and spoke method moves more cims, and reduces surface traffic better.
85% of traffic fixing appears to be making sure your lanes are properly managed and 10% is using less lanes instead of more and 5% is rebuilding/adjusting junctions (or intersections as we Yanks say. I said intersection in Ireland once and got some funny looks.)
I tried downloading the traffic mod on Steam but unfortunately it is not working. I believe it may be because I downloaded Cities Skylines on Origin before learning about Steam. Does anyone know how to download mods if your game is installed in Origin? Please forgive my ignorance... I have never downloaded mods before. Any advice would be much appreciated :)
The only problem I have with your videos is that metro lines don't usually loop, thats why they're called lines, only sometimes in big cities they loop to connect all the lines. But other than that, your videos are very entertaining.
What annoys me about this game's AI is that every car does the EXACT same thing. If they put a little bit of variability into their route planning, that would already improve traffic.
