I have a matching pair of 1958 520 John Deere tractors. They have spent nearly their entire lives on this farm. As far as I am concerned, they can stay with me until my end.
In this video, I have one of them down in my woods pulling double duty.
I am cleaning things up and starting gathering up for this seasons firewood cutting.
Fall is such a special time of the year. The trees are spectacular this fall.
Come along and enjoy the ride along on the 1958 John Deere 520.
Thanks for watching.

Dad had an old A when I was a teenager and we ripped a many of sapling out of the pastures with it. What I like about your old tractors is that you actually work with them and not just parade them Gary. Good job!

Thanks Mathew. Yes, they still earn their keep on this farm.

Love the sound of a 520 in the morning 😊. Those old JD’s pulled a lot of logs in my neck of the woods. Love the chainsaw holder! Great hardwood stand. We have a stand of huge ash that I should probably log before the borer gets here.
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Dave. That emerald ash borer has decimated my timber. There are tons of dead trees We will log it this winter and then I will have all the tops to clean up. That is what we loving refer to as job security.

Never had 520 but 530 was the first new trractor we ever had, the power steering on those tractors were game changers as a little kid it was amazing to be able to steer a big tractor so easily!

My Dad always wanted a 530 instead of the 520’s. Both have proven themselves to be very capable tractors over the years. There was a time that I didn’t particularly care for them. Times like pulling a 2-14’s pull type plow in the clay hills in 2nd gear. I would look back behind me in our biggest fields and see that I was turning the dirt over 28 inches at a time. That and plowing corn with a 2 row mounted cultivator. Didn’t seem like I was getting anything done. Now, they are a real delight to still have around and to still be working with them. I expect that they will both outlast me. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Please come back again.

We had a 3-14 semi-mounted plow and a 4 row front mounted cultivator had a full leg cast from a car wreck cultivating corn sunburned the hell out of my toes resting it on the rockshaft pipe that raised the cultivator!!@@tractortalkwithgary1271

Thanks Jan. I tend to take it for granted as I have grown up with them and have heard that sound my entire life. This pair has spent nearly their entire time on this farm and still work to earn their keep. I am very proud to have both of them.

Them old 2 cylinder tractors are good machines
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Ron. I always thought that these were too small for the farm. They weren’t powerful enough to grind feed. They could only handle a 2 bottom plow , and much of that time was down in 2nd gear. But man are they ever the cats meow down in the woods. They can get in and out of tight places and do a great job dragging up logs and limbs.

Hi Gary! That’s a great old classic JD. Over 4,000 hours! That says it all right there. Didn’t realize you have two of them. You have some beautiful land, especially in the fall! Sorry your ash trees are dying. Very smart of you to use a tree as an extra parking brake on that steep slope! Thanks for sharing!
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 9 месяцев назад
Thanks Martin. Yes, that is exactly what I use that tree for. That is really steep there. It’s really hard to even get on and off of the tractor. There’s a pretty good pucker factor when operating in that area for sure.

Back when they built tractors with steel and iron. Not aluminum and plastic. Always wanted to own a row crop tractor like that, very rare up here cause there was no row crops. Really like that loader on it. Pretty cool.

Always love hearing the ol poppers working! Always nice to get things cleaned up!! Plenty of firewood. We have ash beetles in the county.. or alder beetle, they get both.. and so now, they can't sell any alder .

Good morning Ed. Our ash trees will go for pallet wood. They won’t bring much but at least they have some value. I have quite a few walnut trees in my fence rows. Every one of them is going and they do have value. Right now, walnut is the highest price it has ever been. Almost all of it is going to either Germany or China. I would hope that not one toothpick of what I sell goes to China

@@tractortalkwithgary1271 nice! So knowing how our ash is after being cut for firewood.. that would explain why pallets rot so fast. 🤔

I know what you mean about live trees. On the bright side if you clean up the dead wood sunlight will get in there, and trees will grow. I would suggest hard Maple, but neither of would be around in 40 years when they mature. Our neighbor planted one when his son was 5 it's mature now. Thank you Gary.

That’s what the experts are all saying Louie. The oak trees are experiencing an “ oak wilt” that is damaging them to the point it is killing them. We are going to be in serious trouble if we lose our trees. We will have to live in oxygen tents and wear gas masks.
