Amazing KONI Special Active shocks - My conclusion
This is the last of 3 videos and my opinion on the upgrade.
These really make a difference for less money than the expensive Air ride or comfort shocks.

Great Video John. As you say, its a difficult thing to show a before and after, but it looks reasonably clear that its better👍

Thanks John. I hope it did show the difference. I have an app on my phone that works off its accelerometer. It was showing the bumps well, but unfortunately the 'before' screen recording switched itself off. I did not realise until after I had changed the shocks. That possibly would have given a clearer comparison.

Thanks for another great video. I am not sure whether I will fit the konis but I am convinced that I will see a huge difference on ride quality whichever shocks I fit to my T5. Thanks Damien! Cheers Nick

I went H&R 50mm springs to start with, lost all my teeth as the ride was shocking, now I’m on bilstein b14 komforts and I have to say you get what you pay for, I’m on 80mm drop now and still rides so nice.

That is really good to know. I am happy with the ride on mine now. It's possibly not as good as yours but my budget did not extend for enough for your set up. I'm glad you are happy with yours. I have not experienced the komforts. I hope to one day.

@@ccuk hey dude are Bilstein better than Koni or vice versa? I'm looking for absolute comfort for smooth ride and quiet. 2014 Mazda3 here... Should I get Koni Special Active shocks using existing oe springs or Bilstein B6, B14?

@@BigdisplacementI6 Hi. I am not able to answer that. From my research, for comfort on my T5 I believe that Koni are better suited than Bilstein. This is not from personal experience. I am happy with the Koni compared to stock shocks though.

@@BigdisplacementI6 I know that this answer might come a bit late, but I was looking to upgrade my suspension as well, because my stock struts were blown. My target was also comfort over handling. I was looking at Bilstein B8 (shortened version of B6) and Koni Special Active. The Koni Special Actives are definately the way to go if you are aiming for comfort. HOWEVER: If your vehicle is lowered more than about 2-3.5cm ish, then you will not be happy with the Koni SA. Their two valve system only works in combination with stock ride height or very moderate lowering. If you change the springs with the special actives to something like a 40mm or 50mm lowering spring, the mechanical two valve system will not be able to work properly, and the dampers end up being stuck in their "sporty" mode = hard ride. I think in the meantime Koni offers some spring&damper package or from what I've heared and read: Eibach Pro Kit springs shall also be very suitable if someone is looking for comfort, somewhat decent handling as well as lowering.

Looking at these shocks and considering ride height (if I were to lower the van it would make sense to do it while the shocks are fitted) - what ride height are you at? Might just stick to normal as I think lowering reduces comfort. Also, what was your reason for replacing? Were your old shocks worn or just considered no good as standard? I have a weeping shock so know it will need doing soon but if standard VW new shocks are as good as the Koni i might get those? Hope you understand my vague question.

I replaced the shocks to improve the ride. The lowered springs were fitted at 20k and immediately the ride was noticeably different and rough. The van has done 70k now and I wish I had changed the shocks sooner. My van is lowered 40mm. The only reason is aesthetics. If that does not bother you I would stick to the original ride height. I though the standard ride was good. I hope this answered your question :)

Hi John, can I ask where you bought these shocks from please? Great video.

Hi Greg. It was a company near me called Carnoisseur. They were the cheapest and were on back order (like everywhere else was). www.carnoisseur.com/products/details/koni-special-active-front-shock-absorbers-pair-to-fit-volkswagen-transporter-t5-8705-1392
