We are back on Steve Strbel's "O" scale railroad to see his new village! Lower Pandora at the site of the HUGE Pandora MIl. The main line here is 3 foot gauge, On3, with a 30 inch tram! The scratch built iron leg water tank and coaling tower
are AMAZING!!!!
********************************************************************
Steve Strbel's "O" scale railroad is one of America's best model railroad layouts, covered in many magazines including Model Railroader, Model Railroading, The Narrow Gauge Gazette and Model Railroad Craftsman.

Some of my favorites on Steve's railroad! That coaling tower is beyond perfect! I swear I can even smell the coal! The water tank is absolutely a work of art. When Steve was putting it together, I was amazed at the detail... And i do mean detail!! Everything done to perfection! The boiler looks so real... Don't even think about touching it... or you will get burned!! I can't help but wander over to these items on Steve's railroad.. just to see if there are actual coals glowing in the boiler.. to see if there might be a little drip of water coming out of the water tank... or if the coal at the coaling tower needs attention. A fabulous layout, where looking on, leaves the sense that one is actually "there"!

Steve's work is awe inspiring. He has a genuine gift. Perhaps you can get him to do a dvd on his techniques much like Al's tree construction dvd. The Gazette has been sold?!! If Bob and Irene have gone into retirement I am guessing that many of the usual contributors who have been with them for so long will also be retiring from the Gazette.
@ToyManTelevision

Bob and Irene are not retiring!! (exactly) They sold to Carstens to take a lesser roll, they can't keep up, but will continue to edit as long as they can. The goal is to make a smooth transition to a new way of keeping the Gazette alive for many years to come.

Geese! We are once again "gob-smacked" at Steve's talents. Let's not sell the videographer short, either. Once again Dale has cobbled together an outstanding episode for us. As always, Well Done You! P.S. We were all struck by the News of Bob and Irene's retiring. But, as he so well put it, "Oh, I'll still be around to dabble and there still is a mighty talented group running the show..." We learned of this some time before the official announcement in Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette. Bob and Irene deserve their years as they are both in their eighties. We will keep an 'eye-out' for your article on Pandora in the up-coming issues of the Gazette. Well, because Dale's photography just, "knocks it out of the park" so to speak.

Irene was so kind. I have an "Irene" story and still have her hand written note. I was living not 45 minutes from them and had an open invitation to visit his layout(s) but never went. I am not sure if I had the good fortune or bad that I worked for two, family owned places while I worked. I have only met Bob once and he was most kind. It was before my last open heart surgery and I was ghastly pale, and moving slow. I must of scared him a bit from my appearance. They deserve to take a breather. As far as Steve is concerned; I cannot say enough about how he works and his flare for a bit of whimsy. It helps to have his place superbly video graphed and photographed by a talented guy that thinks outside the box. On to next Sunday.

Hello Dale, Lord only knows how many times I’ve been back in for watching this particular video over and over again ! I’ve always found it fascinating and with the fact that it is 1/48 scale two rail it makes it that much more interesting ! But the only problem I foresee with 2-Rail is a (“return loop”) which with “three rails” is a piece of cake and when you’re “high railing” you’re trying to maintain that 1:48 scale as well ! But Steve really does take the cake ! He’s done some very really awesome Marina and if he’s done any of those ships then he really top the cake !!! I remember the one he did a boat and the railing system pulling the boat out of the water !!! I loved that segment ! 🌊👌

The 2 Rail Return Loop is an interesting problem. There are a few automated systems in place for solving that problem but it just isn’t simple. Even on a DCC system the reverse versing the problem is a real problem. Are used an automated system on my backyard rail Road and it worked great. Trains would proceed to the far end of the rail road go around a balloon truck right back out on the main going the other direction travel hundreds of feet to the other end of the rail road to go through yet another balloon track reverse power and go right back from where they came all automatically. That’s assuming that there’s only one train on the track! Because if they were two trains as soon as one went through a balloon track both trains with reverse direction!! And that is what you call a problem.
@jorgel.fernandeziii8278
@jorgel.fernandeziii8278 4 года назад
Toy Man Television, I understand where you’re coming from ! The very first 4 x 8 my dad got me before he abandoned us had a reverse loop and I spent months trying to figure it out until I came to the conclusion and from that day forward, it convince me that it just wasn’t feasible or logical on a two Rail model train layout and But if you have multiple loops and a yard and even a few sidings with the yard and that usually would satisfied most but when I started with Lionel again after so many years I found that using return loops truly work great on a three rail system ! And that’s considering I’m trying to reproduce the a part of Florida in “O”, HO N, and Z so you can imagine what I’ve been able to collect over the years ! Besides I think the model train plan that I have I may be able to work it were I may not even need a return loop and just do a dog bone style point to point with a circle at each end to reverse the direction of the train although if I start putting in crossing tracks so they can cross which other then I’m going to run into some trouble ! Who was it that you said he said; keep it simple stupid ? 🌊🐺

I love it. Expect for the little bobber caboose. What does the crew in the cupola sit on, if there is a window under it? Check out the inside of a real caboose, you will see what I mean. It is a pet peeve of mine. If you don't study real railroad equipment, mistakes like this are easy to make.

I know you guys live out in Nevada area but if you would be interested in taking a trip east, there are two Great car shows/festivals that happen on the same weekend in September. It's the Ducktail Run in Gas City, Indiana and about 20-30 minutes (could be an hour if you take the main roads with all of the cars :-) ) south of there is the James Dean Festival and car show. They offer a camp ground and trailer parking if you happen to have an RV and Trailer for one of your Mustangs.

@TheModelingNut
@TheModelingNut 7 лет назад
Yea I've personally drove out to Wyoming before so I can really understand the expense and the long haul nature of those drives. They are both great shows with last years car count being 2417 at ducktail, according to their website, and from what I could tell about another 200-300 at James Dean. They also have old fashion flame throwing contests, and an almost endless parade of cars around the lake at the park where the show is located. Also along those same lines there are a few nifty car museums around the Auburn area, just about 1 to 1 1/2 hours north of Fairmount/Gas City. There is the Kruse museum which is an auto and military museum, and another which is a Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg Museum.

If I were just getting in, I'd go with On30. 1:48 scale, same track as HO standard. Can glide right through an 18" radius curve, AND look good doing it. As its a new scale-gauge, all modern, runs great, can be bought with sound and DCC built right in. Affordable! And yet large!! Really taking off as the new size. We will be putting up a show on designing a small layout, not the usual 4X8 plywood. As this turns so well, we like a "dog bone". About 3 feet at the ends, about a foot wide i the middle, as long as you can fit, hanging on a wall. HOn3 is good, way small and more expensive, a good locomotive is about 600. But you can do more in less space.

Hi and yes republished several different articles in several different magazines. There were a couple that we wrote for the concert that they bought but never ran. One was on the use of small cameras inside the trains and the other was on interesting pumps! I’ll look at some of the oddball water pumps around the rail road and how they actually connected to simulated plumbing systems. The article read well. But I think Bob felt that it just didn’t have a wide appeal and he never ran it.
