I’m a RCMP officer and I operationally we don’t wear the red surge. That’s our dress uniform we wear like other police wear their dress blues. We are federal and handle homeland security but the majority of our work is front line uniform policing. We are responsible for most of the rural areas of Canada but also cover a few larger centers that would be considered “city policing”. We get posted much like military personal and are able to transfer across the country throughout our career. In 7 years I’ve competed 4 posts and plan on doing more. We also have a little more than 150 different sections in our organization with a mix of both front line and fed policing sections. We also don’t ride horses operationally. We drove cars and have a couple of motorcycle units in large centers. The only horses we have is for the musical ride. Which is a section you can get into but is only a performance section with a commitment of 3 years. A lot of people go in for a break from police work and then get back into it after their run in it. Our real uniform looks like any other police uniform really. We wear a duty shirt, either internal or external body armor. A duty belt and cargo pants with a yellow stripe. We work along side the city police a lot depending on how close our post is to a city that has a police service. We have a great relationship with other police organizations. Neither the RCMP or city force is better than one another. It’s just a different dynamic and if you want to settle into a city the city service is great. If you want to move around the RCMP has the opportunity. As for the community policing. It’s true. We do try to have a very good relationship with the public as it does build trust and makes our job easier. But we do have major and dangerous crimes. I’ve been involved in high risk situations involving firearms and weapons. I’ve been here involved in many homicide investigations and dealt with very dangerous people. But we do have world class training and make pretty good money to do what we do. Thanks for reading!!!

Well done my man. I've been living in Canada since 2009, that makes 14 years and a few months. I've never had a run in with the police nor have I personally known anyone that has. Silent racism is a thing up here, but at least it won't be the death of me. It's at most a look, a sneer, or a little pencil pushing. I don't have to look over my shoulders every few steps like in the States. Yet as a black man, I refuse to go to the States. It's so violent and dangerous down there. In fact, I fear their police more than I fear their criminals. I'd rather be robbed or assaulted by a criminal down there than be shot to death "on suspicion" because my skin is a little too dark. All the criminals want is money/profit. But you never know what a corrupt cop wants. I grew up around police back in Jamaica since my mom and stepdad were cops, and I stayed at the various stations often. So I have no love lost for police, since they're there to serve and protect. But the evidence against US police is waaaaaay too disturbing. At least I feel safe where I'm at. 👍👍👍

in canada there is a difference between RCMP and regular city police. the training and requirements are a lot different, and RCMP are far less common then average city cops. not to mention RCMP usually stick to doing things based federally, not locally like an average police officer.
@Jhubes5.9
@Jhubes5.9 5 лет назад
TOM ATO that’s not entirely true and depends on what part of Canada. For example I live a half hour outside of city limits and the only police we have out here is RCMP. There are a couple city police forces in the province with the biggest being Halifax police, yet the RCMP still operate in their area. The RCMP deal with a lot of the same things city police do, at least in NS.

@Swelkins
@Swelkins 5 лет назад
@@smithmcsmithy2645 That is not 100% true. The city where I am from is completely policed by the RCMP and so is most of the province. There are a few municipal police services like in Alberta it is only Edmonton and Calgary that aren't policed directly by the RCMP. If by saying "those visiting Canada they will only see the normal police and rarely Mounties or RCMP" you mean the RCMP dressed in the traditional unoform then yes, it is uncommon for that to be seen.

Speaking of mental health, I was in a treatment facility for PTSD in Ontario. When I arrived, a large contingent of police were being discharged but there were still a few there. There were also police dispatchers, soldiers etc. The point is, mental health is recognized as an issue in Canada. And in general, our universal insurance covers treatment. Depression, suicide, anxiety etc. are still issues in Canada, and there is still something of a stigma around it. But my experience is that the stigma is becoming less and people are more and more willing to seek treatment. I don't know how this compares to the US, but the fact that there were 4 suicides in the Capitol Police after the events of January 6 makes me think that more should be done there.

I live in Canada and last summer my friend and I were being a nuisance in our neighborhood and someone called the police on us. The police came to see what was going on; but my friend was afraid of the cops; so when the police walked into the house; my friend was already halfway out the window. For some reason he didn't climb all the way out of the window and leave; so the police were able to grab him. He had a criminal record and I didn't, and he got put in cuffs and put into the police car. Part of the reason he got cuffed was probably because he had a pair of scissors up his sleeve (he was VERY paranoid and always had some form of a blade with him). He had to sit in the car for an hour while the cops where figuring everything out; but then they decided to let him go. Funny story that I thought I'd share.

As a Canadian, I can tell you that most cops don't ride horses and wear the red uniforms. They have vests and the same type of police cruisers as American Cops. You only see RCMP officers wearing red uniforms during ceremonies. The RCMP is more of a federal police force, sort of like the FBI. Most suburbs, smaller towns, and metro areas have the RCMP, but larger cities like Toronto, Calgary, Montral, and Vancouver have their own municipal police departments.

Idk how it is for the other provinces in Canada but I know that in Quebec, being a police officer is one of the jobs with the most demand and so to actually go into the police officer academy they’ll take people with the highest grades. And by high I mean really high, our school told us people with 85% average were getting refused cause it was too low

In Quebec (provincial or municipal police force), you have to do a 2 years course (CÉGEP - technique policière or TP) followed by a 450 hours course to be a police officer. You have to study more at Nicolet college to do anything more (e.g. investigation, etc). Police officers are often back to the academy.

it’s actually 3 years because of the basic cegep classes + the 3 months in Nicolet

I have spotted a fairly major issue. You chose the American municipal or state police but the Canadian Federal police. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE! The American municipal or state police would pull you over and give you a ticket while the Canadian RCMP is more comparable to the "FBI" as they do larger crimes such as shootings or mass murdurs (which fun fact are very rare in Canada) and the RCMP wouldn't give you a speeding ticket. A more appropriate comparison would have been Canadian municipal or Provincial police such as the OPP. Sorry for pointing that out. (An other fun fact, municipal and provincial cops in Canada drive CARS and wear "normal" police attires) Best regards, 🇨🇦

Jonathan Bourget At least in Nova Scotia, you are way more likely to be pulled over/ticketed by an RCMP officer. The municipal forces here make up a very tiny part of the police population and their jurisdictions aren’t super large. The RCMP here generally do all the same stuff the municipal forces do.

I think Quebec and Ontario are the only provinces with provincial police forces, all the other provinces and territories utilize the RCMP in that role. (I could be wrong)

RCMP does actually give out speeding tickets in provinces with no Provincial police force
@BenGalbrand

@@daDuke42 you are right. I live in Québec and we have the Sûreté du Québec. They act as highway cops and investigators for the bigger cities (Montréal and Québec city) and as normal officers for smaller cities/villages. Under them are the municipal police services which patrol and give tickets. Same concept in Ontario. The other 8 provinces and 3 territories have the RCMP as their police service and some have municipal police services.

Nope. RCMP gives you tickets too. It's more common in rural areas and places without provincial/municipal police (for example, northern BC or Alberta)

I visited Toronto once. I was out with some guys looking for a certain club and asked a female cop for directions. She put her hand on my chest and just started walking me backwards, it was so surreal and uncalled for given I had just asked for directions, so I gently removed her hand from my chest and as soon as I did two male cops lifted me off my feet throwing me on the hood of their police cruiser and started yelling at me that “you never touch an officer!” I just threw my hands up and said “hey look I didn’t want any problems I was just asking for directions.” They picked me up and told me to move on. Most bizarre inappropriate experience I’ve ever had with the police and it was in Canada.
