I'm often get asked which credit card is better? The Amex Black Card or the Amex Platinum Card? As an owner of both the American Express Centurion Card and the American Express Platinum card for several years, over 10, I decided to make a video going over a comparison of the benefits of each card and the value to benefits.
Both credit cards are exceptional and this also has become a hot debate on the channel where people just cannot justify the value of the Centurion Card membership fee and the annual fee when compared to the American Express Platinum charge card. They just do not see the value of the centurion credit card that far outweighs the platinum credit card to justify the nearly 10 times more annual fee and 20 times more one time membership fee which is now $10,000.
The Amex Platinum card fee is $550
The Amex Centurion also known as the black card fee is $5000 annual and one time $10,000 membership.

@@sincere355 I used welcome bonus to fly ANA in business class between US and Japan. (Ticket price has been stable at $2000+ during the past 10 years). $200 Uber Eats, $200 airline credits I used it to deposit in my UA travel bank (just spent it to buy tickets from SFO to BOS). 1 year of Uber Eats Pass ($120 value) I paid 0 delivery fee and 5% discount on every order. $100 saks I bought shampoo and cosmetics for friends. Tons of Amex offers($100 off $100 bestbuy, $100 off $100 Home Depot, $100 off $100 Dell this year = $300 free cash) $200 free cash on Amex Travel because I renewed my card last year…..Purchase protection, Cell phone protection, rental car insurance, free extended warranty….. For all those above, I only paid Amex $550….

@@sui8261 great for you I don’t fly business class nor do international travel. I don’t like nor use food delivery services because I must pay higher prices as well as spend time picking up food to avoid delivery fees, the airline credit, purchase protection I have on several of my cards which have much lower or no annual fees. We get AmEx offers on a smaller scale on our Hilton and BCE cards. All of that is free or less then $100 a year.

You’ve really stepped up the production value too, latest videos look nice 👍 About the additional users - the Plat comes with unlimited number of “Gold” authorized user cards that each get their own Global Entry fee waiver. Gave some AU cards / GE memberships to my friends and family as holiday gifts last December 🤑

Great video Simon. I have had d platinum card for a few months and the fee was just increased but it's a great card looking forward to using it more. Just like u pointed out Centurion card is you're paying for the prestige and honestly majority of the people who have Centurion cards dont really care much about the extra benefits they just want the ease of life, concierge and just the prestige

The bonus to the centurion card is the VIP service. Whatever you need, anywhere in the world. "I need a private flight to France in 1 hr." "I need tickets to a sold out concert." Just need points? Pick any other card.

Centurion is more of against the Coupon mentality 4X, 5X, etc and more of getting rewarded with exclusive lifestyle offers. Platinum is still more of playing the catch-up but still getting the reward (But Platinum get to enjoy selecting, while Centurion is more of pushing the boundaries)

Great Video. These two cards shouldn't even be in the same sentence, Centurion card is truly a Luxurious Elite card and the Platinum is a coupon card with water down benefits. Platinum will be relaunched again in July with higher AF without an doubt. I agree that pound for pound Platinum is more value, but the Centurion is all about prestige.

Platinum concierge will call local stores to find that thing you want. Centurion concierge will send a guy to a remote village in eastern Europe on a moped to get that mug you regretted not buying.

I have the regular amex green card and I also have at least 2 no annual fee cards that will preserve my points should I get tired of paying the green card annual fee. I have the regular everyday and the blue business plus. I want to stay in the amex family in some capacity even if I get tired of paying $150 annual fee.

Hi, I really love to see your videos. American Express just called me to offer me the Platinum, I have the Gold at the moment. I’m 22 years old and I feel very comfortable with what I am achieving, since I have always wanted to have an American Express. I don’t know if I’m going too quickly, I apply for the Green by March 2020, they offer me the Gold and I accepted in November 2020 and now by April 2021 I have the chance to get the Platinum but I said I need time to think about it. I enjoy very much your videos when you talk about American Express, I’m a big fan!

@@mivisionworldwide There is a hidden max limit with the AMEX charge cards (i.e. Gold + Platinum). It's a flexible limit based on your reported income and your monthly spending. Typically for starters its usually a $20K max limit and it goes up based on your monthly spending, income, and paying off the balances in full.

I have the Amex LintDirt card. I use it a lot at the Dollar store. It has an annual fee of punch me in the face and a kick on a nutsack. Also it saves me money on my travels, it lets me hang free behind semi trucks. I’m thinking of upgrading to Platinum Excelsior Elite Echelon card but my passive income is telling me to Eff Offf.

what I don't understand, is why do people want little perks with the Centurion card.If you have $ 15, 000 to hand over to AMEX to carry a card, do you really need little perks.The black is for people with REAL CASH, like celebrities/rappers/CEO who want flaunt their wealth. The black card is not for the average Joe. I doubt if JAY-Z OR Justin Bieber paid $15, 000 for the black card to get discount at the neighborhood AMC or whole foods .

So basically what your really really saying is, having both cards is the strategy. Platinum with their current benefits for normal things, move to Austin so you use the equinox benefit of the centurion and shop at saks to make up the remaining difference. Book your flights with the centurion for the 1.5x, custom service perks and everything balances out. 👍🏿

Centurion is not the best to book the flights but to redeem the points for transfer. For flights Plati gives you 5x on dollar spend so its by far the best travel for points card.

Having approximately 100,000 Centurion Card members worldwide is not that rare imho. To put that into perspective, Patek Philippe produced about 50,000 timepieces a year before the pandemic. Ever since the global pandemic started, their production number dropped substantially due to the lockdowns and global supply chain disruptions. Any person trying to buy a brand new Patek Philippe watch at an authorized dealer at the moment will find it extremely difficult to obtain one as there’s a shortage of PP watches in the market. They can try to buy in the grey market but they’ll have to pay way above MSRP if the watch is available.

would it be woth for example having gold platinum and black because they are all good in their own way. example using the gold card at restaurants and supermarkets and using the platinum booking hotels and airlines but using the black for the status at the hotel and other stores. So I’m curious then, what do you think about the changes said to be coming to the platinum card? - $300 annual Equinox credit -A $240 annual entertainment credit, broken down as a $20 monthly credit towards magazine & news subscriptions, video streaming services, and audio & music streaming services -$200 annual credit for prepaid hotel bookings through Amex Travel -Possible annual CLEAR membership, may be replacing the TSA Pre-Check credit -A $100 Resy credit, but may be a temp. Credit. And the one that will bother people the most....platinum cardholders can’t bring guests into the centurion lounge, unless they’re above $75k annual spend.

Not a fan of the guest change at the lounges. The $300 credit to equinox may be a good but it’s for those that use the gym. Not sure if they offer a month to month. The other credits or entertainment fees are nice. Basically they are giving you a free card at the end of it. So I think it’s an overall great card. I think $75k is a lot of spend for an average person.

I think they should bump up the Platinum Saks Credit to $200.00 at least. The Equinox Credit could be changed out for something better, Maybe a $100.00 or $200.00 Disney Parks Credit!

Hi i have seen your presentation of centaurion card. And for me i think amex can do a better work when it comes to the gift from prada. who wants to walk around with a lether belt around the wrist? For me thats a very dealbreaker. What do you think? I think prada have done the work just the half way. A prada watch would be better and useful

I have the Platinum card but I know if I go out and attempt to purchase something for $10k it’ll be declined. Does the Centurion card come with any type of limit?

If you’re being declined a 10k purchase on the Platinum, you had to do something to make AMEX warrant that limit.

Centurion also will have a similar limit it depends on your income, payment history, etc.

The limit they'll accept is based on what you normally spend. Often if you plan to make a big purchase with your amex charge card you can call them and get them to approve it.

10x points doesn’t exist anymore, it’s 5x points on groceries and gas, and that’s only for 1 year only before it goes to 1x points on anything outside of travel. Frankly, the Gold card is much better at 4x points on groceries and and gas for everyday use. Gold also pays 4x on travel versus 5x on platinum, there’s only $100 better airline credit and u we credit… unless you travel 5-6 + times a year for personal use(5 or 6 vacations annually) then platinum is a lesser card for points than gold. It’s been irrational that way for some years now and I’m not sure why the gold card gets 4x points on everyday things (restaurants, groceries, gas and travel) every year and the more expensive platinum card only wins on travel and barely(20% a handful of times a year) and loses by a lot (80% on next to everything else)

You’re evaluating the platinum versus the centurion in purely dollars and cents terms here, and I think we all know there’s a huge intangible benefit to being a centurion holder - Prestige. You whip that black card out anywhere people take notice. You’re a somebody, you’re an elite person if you use this card, and that alone, even without any of the benefits, is worth it for most people. Let’s be honest

It’s a charge card but also very similar to a credit card where you can carry the balance and get charged interest.

But new members do get it for the first 6 months up to a certain amount. It’s like a sign up bonus Those of us who had the card before that are got $100 at Best Buy and $100 at Home Depot which the new users largely did not.
