@@iwantadominantmommy like it’s equal parts “random=funny” because that just comes out of nowhere and is unexpected, but also Patrick is a man of massive privilege and wealth, the only traumatic thing that could possibly happen to him would be divorce, and that’s the only thing that could possibly “justify” his actions, besides being late
My favorite part is when Paul Allen says “it was you, Patrick! You’re the American psycho!” right before he gets killed. Amazing delivery out of Leto on that line. Brilliant movie.
Its so strange how people idolise him. Ignoring the fact that he's completely insane, he's also nearly brought to tears by his colleagues not giving a shit about his business card and not getting a good seat in a restaurant. In other words he's a complete fucking loser. But he also treats women like shit so I guess that'll draw in certain crowds
**patrick bateman voice** it's 100% a comedy. it's so overacted, incredibly quotable, and the comedic timing (while likely not intentional) is perfect. the way his face moves is almost jim carrey-like in so many scenes
1:16 when he says "I'll call you", he smiles at her but at the last frame Bale gives her an evil look, such a cool detail that the actor put into the character
Even the director and Christian Bale themselves said it is a dark comedy and both laughed their asses off at the premiere when most of the crowd didn't know how to react. Way ahead of its time
My favorite part is how they all have the same title in the same division of the same company; yet you can tell each one of them is convinced they are a god compared to the others
My favourite part is the, “I’m almost in tears by the time we reach the restaurant”, because on one hand it’s comically ridiculous, but on the other, as someone with OCD, I relate to being that upset about things not going according to plan.
@@user-sl7ie9te5r Right. And how would you quantify that? Rate your disappointment on a scale of one to ten? I'm sure this happens to everyone. That's the problem with self diagnosis. Thanks for your reply and have a great day!
If y'all like American Psycho, especially its comedic elements, you HAVE to see Vampire's Kiss. It may have been an inspiration for American Psycho (it came out in the 80s) and there's really nothing extra remarkable about it other than Nic Cage's glorious performance. It's like "we already have American Psycho at home" but on crack instead of cocaine.
0:51 as someone from sri lanka i always found this line inexplicably hilarious. it just feels real, like u could imagine yuppies making small talk about the country as if they actually cared while mispronouncing its name the whole time
Reminds me of Bridget Jones trying to make conversation by bringing up Chechnya and Hugh Grant’s character saying he couldn’t give a fuck. Also great to see a fellow Lankan 👋😃🇱🇰
It isn’t meant to look like they care either, the point is that the dude talking about sri lanka and patrick don’t really care about those issues but instead are trying to look like they are the most moral out of the group, because the movie is making fun of that yuppie culture. Also a detail: patrick talks about feeding and housing the homeless, but (earlier or later, can’t remember) in the movie he actually kills a homeless person and later he confesses he killed 5-10 homeless people.
I laugh more and more every time I watch this movie. A couple of funny parts you left out are when patrick asked the homeless dude why he was fired, and asked "insider trading? just joking", and when they were at Espace, and bryce hands patrick the menu and says "the menu is in braille" and it cuts to the see-through menu
The first time I watched this movie was with friends and I was laughing the whole time and my friends thought I was deranged. Second time we all were cracking up and our other friend who had not seen it yet thought we were deranged. I will die by the idea this movie is supposed to be funny
Yeah same the first time I watched I was like dang this movie us screwed up then the second time watching I didn’t take it quite as serious and it was a good time lol
4:25 Alright but actually, Luis has the best card out of everyone's. Not only is his actually unique, it genuinely just looks nice. Everyone else did boring black text meanwhile Luis used a pretty gold/bronze coloring (and I think green for other text) as well as having a similar colored case, makes the indentation of the lettering stand out better imo. Of course Bateman had to try and kill him, it was clear that Luis had far better taste exceeding his and all else.
I can’t believe you left out the part where he’s dragging the body out and Luis goes “Patrick is that you?” “No, it isn’t me. You’re mistaken” I crack up every time I watch that part.
Am i the only one who bursted out laughing when Patrick had to do a whole circle in the revolving door just to shoot someone, AND THEN RE-EXIT💀 Edit: The community has thrived me in likes Thanks everyone🤧🥹
You cut out the best Louis interactions! "Your compliment was sufficient louis." "No louis, it's not me, you're mistaken." And the whole bathroom scene is hilarious
4:44 I think McDermott and Van Patten are actually in awe of Luis’ card, and look so dejected because they feel threatened by how much better it is than theirs. Bateman feels this way so strongly that he wants to kill Luis.
I read it in some comment section that he realized that it's the same reaction they had to his card and that shows that they didn't care really and that's what made Patrick angry. This also works
@@sarii_p1697 not really, in the book they all thought it was absolutely hideous and cringed out of embarrassment for him. Bateman just wanted to kill him because well he’s Bateman.
@@sarii_p1697 its not the same reaction though, when they were all comparing cards they were having a dick measuring contest over it. With Louis they just kinda dismissed him. Bateman wanted to kill him because Louis is trying to flex on them but his taste is hideous and Louis thinking he is comparable to Bateman angers him
How can anyone not view this as a dark comedy? The character christian Bale created here is so unique, entertaining and insane. Its like like a caricature of what a sociopath is supposed to be. Done very well but overdone with the behavior and facial expressions. I dont think ive ever seen a character like this irl or in movies, or anywhere for that matter. Amazing film. I watch it every few years to laugh my ass off.
Him talking about music and his obsessive narcissism and the way he talks about himself and his insane jealousy is so absurdly ridiculous you can’t help but laugh
@@trevorcoyle517 Agreed, Patrick’s may be nice and neat but it doesn’t feel lived in and there’s hardly any personality to it. Just goes to show how cold and nonhuman he is.
This movie has so many green flags for me. -has to be watched multiple times to truly be enjoyed -really fucked up in a bizarre and hilarious way -offensive humor that actually has a point instead of being edgy for the sake of being edgy -the protagonist being batshit insane in every single frame -making fun of rich white men PS: If you're offended by the "making fun of rich white men" bit, then you definitely didn't get the movie or the book because the author explicitly said that that was the point 😂
A lot of people in the comments don't know what satire is and it shows. This movie isn't "accidentally comedic", it's intentionally comedic because both the movie and the book are satirical. You're supposed to find it laughable and ridiculous, that's the whole point.
My favourite line from this has to be when Patrick and Timothy are doing coke in the club and that guy leans over the stall door and says "Will you keep it down, im trying to do drugs."
Funniest thing about the business card scene is the fact every single one of them spells "Acquisitions" wrong. I hope this was intended and not just a typo by the art department.
Bale’s work is so overdone it borders on parody, but it’s perfect for the character. He’s so lost on how an actual normal person might behave he goes to the moon with his efforts to compensate.
The business card scene may be one of my favorite scenes from any movie. Its just so utterly ridiculous and nails the toxic male corporate business type right on the head. Its hilarious.
I saw this movie for the first time in the mid 2000s and over the years it’s creeped up into being one of my favorite movies ever. There’s not a scene without some pure gold in it
In the Trivia section, it said They filmed every Willem Dafoe scene 3 times, 1 where he knew Bateman was guilty, 1 where he thought bateman was innocent, and 1 where he isnt sure, and the Director placed one of the 3 versions every time he appears, and honestly, when you watch the movie, you can pinpoint certain moments where youre like "yeah this is definitely a scene where he thinks patrick is guilty lol" Dafoe was great
I'm amazed the amount of people who have seen the film and will try to speak authoritatively about their opinions on it but have never cared to read the book.
Somehow the funniest scene in the movie isn’t in this. When Patrick shoots the cop car and it explodes, and he just looks and the gun confused. That sh*t killed me
