Beware, some of the characters in The League of Gentleman are very dark, very twisted, almost evil, which may leave you open mouthed rather than seeking harmless roaring laughter (ie Papa Lazarou,Tubbs & Edward,Herr Lipp)..Its not laugh out loud slapstick or stand up,so you will have to really follow the gist of the characters to understand the various plotlines. It's definately NOT a sketch show in the normal sense, even though it plays out various 'sketches' or scenes, some of the characters persist throughout the series in plotlines.

League of Gentleman was dark, incredibly dark, it sparked some controversy, even the people in the village where it was filmed weren't particularly fond of being associated with the show, but as someone who grew up in a remote UK community, part of the reason I love the show is how true to reality a lot of the dark humour actually is, it's truly brilliant and on my top ten list of greatest UK sitcoms of all-time. There was a brilliant show called 'Teachers' which I'd love to see you react to, it was basically inbetweeners but from the teacher's perspective, and the teachers in the show are equally badly behaved, it's a true cult classic, as it's not that well known, but is adored by those who do know of it.

It is never not dark. The League of Gentlemen is brilliant. It is like a combination of kitchen-sink drama and very dark comedy. The characterisations, variously played by the 3 main actors, are brilliantly written and performed. This works better by watching the episodes in order, series by series, not dipping in. Much of it can work as set pieces however.

4 actors that play ALL the characters - these characters live in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey - the humour is very dark, topics including murder, kidnapping, possibly cannibalism (never quite got to know what the special meat was sold by the butcher to his select few customers). Some real laugh out loud moments but best watched as a whole as many of the storylines develop from episode to episode - also keep an eye out in shop windows, notice boards or generally just in the back of shot as there are some very funny jokes posted that are easy to miss.

The League of Gentlemen is an excellent series! Plenty before me have now given an accurate description of a dark yet hilarious show. One small clip can't do it justice. If you enjoy this show, I heartily recommend Inside No.9 as a follow up. It's written and performed by the two actors you saw in this clip here - Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith; every episode has a unique story and the only linking thread is the number 9 in some way. Aaaaannnnnddd…..that’s as light as it gets! Not sure many have reviewed the whole series, maybe copyright issues? - but it is really worth watching for your own pleasure/discomfort! It really is a one off, nothing else like it (except the League when they did other projects like Psychoville and Inside No. 9) bizarre, hilarious and shot through with an occasional strange pathos. Like many British TV shows it’s a short run, three series, a not-very-Christmassy special, a feature film, several live tours and a recent - 2020 I think! - catch up series. The last series culminated in a Tristam Shandy-esque final line and the last live tour tied up developments from that series with Highlights including ‘what happened to Mick the cave guide’, ‘Edward and Tubbs - The Musical’ and the Reverend Bernice taking it out on the audience with extreme prejudice!

My wife and I were in a Café in a Suffolk seaside village and we still laugh about it as the 'local restaurant for local people' as the experience made us think of Royston Vasey. The waitress was laughing, smiling and joking with people she knew then broke it off and approached us. By the time she reached us the smile had completely gone and the mood of irritation on her now sour features was impossible to miss. The service was very curt and obviously we were a very irritating distraction from better things. It always was amusing when England of all places tried to switch to being a service culture as this program is not pure imagination I can assure you. Fawlty Towers was based on real life experience for example. Many shops in the UK are plastered with notices not to abuse the staff as there is little right of reply and double standards in treatment of customers against what the shopkeepers can say so no answering back is tolerated. Our ailing failing NHS will be festooned with these notices as the medical practice will not really want to see you or be bothered with your petty problems and it is free so they are doing you a massive favour. Complain and you will need to find a new doctor and you will rarely see one of those nowadays whatever.

This is pretty mild stuff for League of Gentlemen but the "I didn't force her" hints at how dark it really is. There is a live version from Drury Lane (which is on RU-vid) that has a lot of the famous characters and some stuff not in the TV series.

The programme is set in the English village of Royston Vasey. Royston Vasey is the real name of the comedian Chubby Brown, who you might have reacted to. Chubby Brown appeared occasionally as the mayor of Royston Vasey. As others are saying here, League of Gentlemen is dark, daaaaaaaaaaark comedy.
