Never seen a player like Gerrard. He struck the ball with so much power and accuracy, was a thing of beauty to watch. But to really appreciate his brilliance on the pitch you need to understand his leadership, defensive and goal creating skills were at least as good as his amazing finishing. Lampard is probably a better scorer in the box (not by much) but in every other category , Gerrard is better and still a great scorer, and a better long range shooter , better passer, tackler, faster, better at volleys, better in the air in attack and defence, stronger, better crosser, free kick taker, better Captain, better in the clutch,possibly the most complete player of all time, certainly up there, these are just his goals It does not show his will and heart and fire and ability to drag teams through fire and win against the odds as a leader, he was a phenomenon. Best player to play his career in the Prem (all but 2 years of it ) and not win the Prem title, that was largely down to Liverpool never quite having a good enough squad to win a title, not really his fault (although rival fans will cite the slip against Chelsea in 14 but really our Attack was great our midfield was great but our defence was shit, which is why we did not win the league. The Best Midfielder! I’ve watched him played as a youngster till he retired and amongst all the midfielders I’ve seen, he is definitely the best for me.

Literally had everything…..could play any position on pitch….and the purity and sweetness of his passing combined with his vision and ability was up there with the very best. For me Zidane and Messi are the greatest but Gerrard was knocking at that door…..imagine him playing in those great Chelsea or Real Madrid sides that he turned down to stick with his boyhood club….he would have excelled and been weighed down by trophies so massive respect to him for staying at Liverpool when he could’ve walked into any side in his prime.

Funny thing, he wasnt known for his capability to score. He built his legacy thru hard work and carrying the whole team for a decade on his shoulders, no money no shortcuts, just him and the same Red Liverpool shirt on.

It was much more common when he was playing for midfielders to score, because the formations of the team and the tactics were different. So any midfielder worth their salt needed to be able to score because most time your formation only had one or two maximum strikers on the field.
