"A naked American man stole my balloons!" Saw this in the theatre when it came out, and me and my friends were absolutely blown away by the utterly amazing makeup effects and the take on werewolves, and the perfect blend of humour and horror. And the music choices are just brilliant. Love this movie.

This is (in my opinion) the best werewolf movie ever made. The perfect blend of comedy and horror. And the special effects...OH MY GOD, so good. Rick Baker is a genius of makeup and prosthetics. If I'm not mistaken, his work on this movie is the reason the academy awards created the category for best makeup. Also, Michael Jackson loved this movie so much that he went out of his way to get John Landis and Rick Baker on board for the Thriller music video. Sorry to hear about your heart. I hope everything turns out fine.

A miracle of practical effects. I knew you'd love this one and appreciate the makeup. Nothing was animated, these were all practical makeup effects combined with clever editing that jumps to each specialty wolf at different angles during different stages of the transformation. The hair growing effect was a little simpler. The hairs were pulled backwards through fake skin and then the film was reversed in post. Hope you are feeling better and doing well and that your news is good news. Happy Season of the Witch!

I must say I loved watching your reaction. I saw this film when it first came out at a drive-in theater in Amityville when I was a kid and it remains one of my all time faves. And to this day so much about the film holds up. The tight script. The performances. The perfect blend of horror and comedy. And the all-time greatest werewolf transformation scene. No CGI, just practical movie magic. Over 40 years on its still a classic

The idea of a canine quadraped (4 legged creature) trying to come out from inside a bipedal one. Truly fascinating, the entire musculoskeletal structure expands and shortens to create a new set of back muscles, spinal column, hind legs, front paws, elongated jawline, protruding canines/fangs etc.

The FX artist for this movie, Rick Baker is/was very active on instagram. Posting pics of his projects, past and present. Dunno if he's still doing it, but he's definitely worth a follow. Fun Fact: Writer/Director John Landis and Rick Baker wanted to make this movie for years. One day out of the blue, Baker gets a call from Landis "We're finally making our werewolf movie. Can you get out to London?" Baker was in the pre-production for for another werewolf movie, "The Howling". Baker handed the job off to his protege' and hauled ass to England. His protege' was Rob Bottin. He's the FX artist who would later do "John Carpenter's The Thing".

"A naked American man stole my balloons." 😂 You can't take this movie seriously. 😂 Fun Fact: The fake porno movie "See You Next Wednesday" was the first thing to be filmed during production. Director Cameo Fact: John Landis appears briefly near the end of the film. He is the bearded man who gets hit by a car and thrown through the plate glass window in Piccadilly Circus. Casting Notes Fact: Mr. Collins is the one and only Frank Oz. Not only is he an actor and director, but is also a celebrated voice actor. Best known as the voice (and puppeteer) of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Yoda. Practical Make-Up Fact: Rick Baker (the winner of the very first Academy Award for Best Make-up that was created the year this movie came out) claimed to have been disappointed by the amount of time spent shooting the face changing shot for the transformation after having spent months working on the mechanism. John Landis only required one take lasting about seven seconds. Baker felt he had wasted his time until seeing the film with an audience that applauded during that one seven second shot.

This is one of the greatest and most distinctive, individualistic of any "American Werewolf In London" reaction, for a whole host of reasons. Brilliant idea to drown the transformation scene out so that you could include your reaction to that scene in its entirety, thank you for being so generous. You got all the humor, and I mean EVERYTHING. You were drawn into the whole premise. You were blown away by the practical effects (which, of course, everyone is!). You're from the UK, you're a horror fanatic, you have a background in makeup. And you're just simply intelligent enough to "get" the movie, and it was an HONOR to share this experience with you. Nothing but gratitude. This was a majorly groundbreaking movie. The following year was "The Thing", which was another amazing practical effects film of course. And preceded by stuff like the incredible 1978 version of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers". Have you seen that yet? That is a MUST SEE for your channel. Please put the 1978 version of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" on your list, you will love that movie. Ok, I'm writing you a book. THANKS!

PS: You want horror comedy? The very next year: "Creepshow" written by....and co-starring!...Stephen King! And directed by George Romero (Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead)!!! An anthology of five stories, you'll LOVE it. Horror comedy. Each story better than the last! And of course, "Evil Dead 2", which I'm sure you've seen already. Definitely do not miss "Creepshow"! ("Poltergeist" has comedy in it, although I wouldn't call it a horror-comedy. So does "The Fly". And definitely so does the 1978 version of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", very intelligent movie(s). LOVE YA! You are a FANTASTIC reactor. That was a helluva reaction! I KNOW you've seen all the behind the scenes stuff about this movie by now so I won't regurgitate any of it here other than to say it blew our minds in '81 and clearly it has held up ONE HUNDRED PERCENT as fresh as it was then. It's a fun horror movie, we came out of that theatre and we felt we got our money's worth, you know what I mean? We felt like "now THAT'S a movie"!! A meal of a movie. So much fun. (great soundtrack too! Every song is about the moon! )

Some have speculated that in the ending scene when the snarl relaxes it's what's left of him as human & he attacks to end the curse knowing they'll shoot, probably what he meant about only being killed by someone you love. it was about the same with the shot gun as THE FLY ends, except there it was more obvious.

Skeletalk, you've an interesting accent. I don't usually enjoy southern accents but you have my attention and I find you calming. To the movie. I really enjoyed revisiting it with you. Your reaction was fun and I'm glad to see you enjoyed it for the odd comedy it was. I was 14 and living about as rural as you can get in England when this came out. Having fled the rural life aged 16, the only life I'd ever known, and by that age living and working in London, I finally got to watch this. I used to spend a lot of evenings on my own enjoying the scenes and lights around the West End from '84-'87 and I felt this movie captured that somewhat innocent London rather well. Tottenham Court Road tube station could be incredibly quiet late at night back then. As an underage youngster I got to experience the delights of the porn cinemas and the Soho area, I wasn't a regular to them at all I just wanted to see all I could as I knew I probably wouldn't choose to live in London ever again. To my memory the quality of that porn movie, the staff in the theatre and the handful of dodgy patrons in the seats was just about perfectly portrayed. The bustle of Piccadilly was well pictured too I felt, always chaos but add a werewolf and it all kicks off. Not many movies stand the test of time, this one is a time capsule . . and, yes, the practical effects stand up incredibly well (the visual effects aren't awful either, and bloody good for the time). I imagine the local Tesco has forced the closure of The Slaughtered Lamb by now ;-). Success with your channel!

There's this insane film I watched last night called Tourist Trap, from 1978. I don't want to spoil it for anyone wanting to see it, so in short it has mannequins and wax figures and mannequins in it..and is CREEPY as hell. And ya gotta love the use of music and lighting in the older films. The great thing about the older films is cameras were very expensive and special effects took time, so they had all this time to perfect the film. And only the most passionate and creative people could afford the camera, only they could win over backers to fund it, and so the film was always interesting or at least unique. They were so creative back then because they had to be. Nowadays, any lazy un-creative person can get a camera and greenscreen the location and even blood...ergo now there's way too many bad movies. I heard that even some Hollywood films have CGI...OMG.

Oh and the atmosphere of films is so important, shooting on location, like John Hughes always shot in Chicago..now they mostly only film in Cali or Canada and pretend it's Florida or New York..so they miss out on the ambiance, even things like bug sounds. LOVED your reaction! In the documentaries about this film, the bones cracking is definitely something they talked about, which is also why David is screaming in agony the entire time. You were definitely spot-on with that observation. Many different techniques were used to show the transformation, from mechanical rams, air hoses to fill air bladders, reverse-motion for the hair growing, hole in the floor to allow full motion for legs and arms but have non-human proportions, etc. Definitely genius-tier effects mastery in this film by the legend Rick Baker. Also, your reaction to the first full-body reveal of the werewolf as he closed in on the victim on the escalator in the Tubes was priceless. CGI won't ever top that scene. I also love the eyes, and how they look insane with rage--and the werewolf howl? Best ever IMO. Recognizable as wolf, but also with a crazed hate/pain filled quality lacking in a real wolf's howl. Great music, both in terms of the songs chosen and the score by the criminally underrated Elmer Bernstein (who also did Ghostbusters, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and many others). This in is my top 2 horror films of all time (tied with The Thing). So glad you enjoyed it. As always, good thoughts and vibes for your health. Peace!

HA! Was wondering when you were going to get to this one! Now, here's a bit of trivia for this movie: go back and watch the initial attack on Jack and David. During the attack scene, during more than a few takes, Griffin Dunne (who plays Jack) kept RIPPING the werewolf puppet's "face" off. Rick Baker (the effects master on this movie) got some sick of him doing it, after he finally repaired it and made sure Griffin Dunne couldn't tear it off, he started beating the shit out of Griffin Dunne with the Wolf Puppet! So the look of frustration on Griffin Dunne's face during that scene? Is him GENUINELY getting pissed off at Rick Baker which ended up in the movie and the cut after was telling him to chill out lol loved your reaction to the make-up effects for "Zombie" Jack. There's also another of Griffin Dunne going into public with the full make up and getting weird looks lol

This is my personal favorite horror film of all time and many have stated that the transformation in this film is the best ever depicted in cinema and the most accurate to the mythology... however they did screw over the werewolf in terms of it's strength, speed, durability, and weakness.... literally the only way to kill a werewolf permanently is a mortal wound inflicted by silver... as for your question about how a person becomes a werewolf... there is a number of ways... a ritual performed on a full moon, a curse inflicted by a witch, or being bitten by another werewolf and surviving. The longer a person is a lycanthrope the easier they are able to shift... they also have a insatiable hunger (which grows worse the longer they are a lycanthrope) only soothed by eating hearts and a overwhelming rage which causes them to lose their sanity and enter a fugue state kinda like how in real life you get so angry you see red and dont remember what happened when the rage passes....only those with a strong will can control the beast..... you can kinda see David break through at the end when she says she loves him but the rage and fear quickly takes over and he loses himself. In some versions werewolves even age slower than humans being immortal in a sense.... for example: every 100 years they only age 5.... kinda like reverse dog years. also (I swear i'll stop after this final werewolf fact) Lycanthropy enhance's the host's hormones as well as their senses and physical strength... that is why David was all over the nurse in the Cab like a dog.

The scene in the tubes is one of the creepiest. Long dim corridors, so creepy. Use to watch the tv show Kolchak the night stalker. There was one episode that was in an underground complex that had tunnels. You can hear light bulbs breaking as the lights go out and this lizard creature walks toward the detective. That was one of my favorites as it was claustrophobic and creepy.

Bit of trivia,....The taxi driver is Alan Ford,....Brick Top in Snatch! Also, when I went to college in late 80's, early 90's, There was a very decrepit Adult cinema on the South Bridges in Edinburgh, somewhere around Nicholson Street. They weren't that uncommon at the time. Others have mentioned, The Howling, it's definitely worth a look. It's a different take and look from this, but right up there with it in terms of quality.

Waaaay back when Michael Jackson's Thriller video came out, they had a television special about the making of the video. Since the video was also direcred by John Landis, with Rick Baker again doing the special effects/makeup, they also showed some of behind the scenes for this movie. I was 7 when I saw that, don't think my parents expected all the footage from this movie. I went to bed with a mild feeling of terror that night.

Since you love puppetry and practical effects, this film has the most famous puppeteer in the world and the most famous practical effects artist in one film. Frank Oz, voice/puppeteer of Miss Piggy, Yoda, Grover, and Bert (of Bert and Ernie) just to name a few, is an actor in this film. He's also credited as "Miss Piggy" in the Nazi Werewolf dream sequence as the Muppets play on the television. Rick Baker is another name you should know. He did all of the practical effects in the film, and as others have mentioned, he raised the bar for industry and revolutionized horror effects. To this day, he really hasn't been bested, and his werewolf transformation sequence is still the golden standard.

Hi Katie another enjoyable vid as always, also so glad you liked this film its one of my favourite comedy horrors, and the transformation scene is still one of the best even after all these years, the pub at the beginning has some very famous British actors in it most notably Rik Mayall, also Jenny Agutter starred in Child's Play 2, but I also know her from the best Sci-Fi comedy series ever made Red Dwarf, she played Professor Mamet in the episode Psirens, and if you want a dark fantasy/horror film about a vampire you should watch Dark Shadows, it stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Eva Green. And I agree with you about London I try to avoid the place at all costs, and I'm very happy living where I do in the Cotswold's which is such a beautiful part of the country, and I had to google this because I've never thought about this before but apparently over the past decade or so the amount of sunshine hours we get has increased by 3%.

I'd never seen anything done like that before, not realising that was the tip of the ice berg for fx, everything was different for both a horror & Werewolf film, it wasnt done like the old Hollywood one's, where it looked ae though someone's beard had grown all over their face, this was also a quadropedic Werewolf to(which meant it walked on all fours) I have to also praise the quality of the film, & quality of Direction & writing by whacky John Landis, he came up with a new story, & the...King kong like wild ruralness brought into civilisation, worked so well to, there's more to this film than ground breaking fx

The title of the movie playing in the theater “See You Next Wednesday” is a play on an old phrase. A way to refer to female genitalia was to call it her “See You Next Tuesday”, because “See You” is a homophone for saying the letters “C U”. You can imagine what the words “Next Tuesday” add to the rest of the phrase.

Unfortunately when it comes to- "Armed response units, in our Capital City's now, this film is way ahead of it's time, as we have become more & more Americanised the ending is very abrupt after all that chaos, it felt as though we needed an epitaph, but the rest was classic.

I think this is probably my favourite werewolf film. The special effects, the comedy and the scenes in the London underground and the porno theatre are the highlights in my opinion. I think my only critisism is that the characters and themes could have been developed a bit more. But, overall very good werewolf film. The scenes on the Moors and in the pub were shot in The Black Mountains in Wales. Lovely countryside to go hiking and camping in. And you gotta think ecology; we wouldn't have the beautiful landscape without the shit weather 😂. The creepy US Embassy offical is Frank Oz of Jim Henson and Star Wars fame. Rick Mayall and Brian Glover also star in cameo roles as two of the pub goers. Rick Baker's practical effects are some of the best in film history in my opinion. Baker and Landis actually had a debate over whether the werewolf should be on two legs or four. This raises the all important question: Bipedal werewolf or quadrupedal werewolf? There's also a clip from a Joe Rogan podcast with Rick Baker where he talks about his work on American Werewolf. Definitely worth checking out if you want to know more.

Hey Katie, hope you get the answers you want from your consultants. I'll maybe post another comment after watching the video, but while I think of it, do you have any thoughts about what is a good time to introduce a young person to digital art? My niece recently showed me some of her (year 7) school work, and it seemed pretty good to me (the shading etc looked reasonable well done and she seems to have a good eye and a good hand at least for copying things), and it got me thinking about getting her a cheap graphics tablet as a Christmas present. Do you have any thoughts about if someone should try to deal with the practical drawing first with real charcoal materials for example, or is it OK if they go digital early on?
@skeletalk
@skeletalk 9 месяцев назад
I do absolutely recommend doing traditional first, I still always use primarily biro pen and cheap watercolours I really recommend that. Could get her a sketchbook to carry around! I don't use charcoal as much as I should but it would be fun for her to try out a few different materials and see which ones she likes the most. As I said I swear by biro pen and a crappy watercolor palette that's my go to! However you could absolutely get her a tablet I would recommend a NON screen xp-pen that way she can learn hand ehe coordination and control of the pen (you're looking at the screen and drawing elsewhere) it's a really valuable skill to learn for precision, it's how I learnt with shaky hands. Maybe get her a little sketchbook, few different materials to try out then a cheap tablet! So glad you asked and always happy to help! 💙💙💙💙
@neilbiggs1353
@neilbiggs1353 9 месяцев назад
@@skeletalk Thank you. I think my big concern if she goes digital too quickly is that she may not fully appreciate how media are meant to behave/interact. I saw a video looking at watercolour brushes in Krita* and the person doing the video had to adjust the opacity to make them look right as they went over areas that were already painted, so she might not be aware of things like that. It's her birthday soon so she is getting the Dorling Kindersley Artist's Drawing Techniques book, and I'm letting her tell me what she wants to try from that book, I feel like she is more likely to try pastels than charcoal. To a layperson it looks like a lovely book as it breaks down each technique simply so you can try them one at a time, my only complaint about it is that I think it ought to have a link to more reference images for each technique, and maybe they can do that via QR codes in future editions. If she likes it, it then gives the option for the Painting Techniques book, and I can do something similar there by letting her guide me in what types she wants to try out. I'm glad you mentioned the XP-Pen brand - it was the Deco Mini 7 that kind of put the idea in my head. Her brother has started to do Photography at GCSE this year too and I know if you want to do anything funky in Photoshop etc, using a mouse is not that great, so it may be something for them to share. I don't think he is going to want to do much more than very basic editing though so one for him would be overkill! With my niece, she is much more creatively driven (and she has asked me to look at her stories as she writes them which is charmingly ambitious!). She has always liked her craft activities, so what I'm hoping is that she starts to see art as another medium for her stories, even if it is just something as simple as sketching characters to try and figure out bits of who they are. If my laptop can handle it, I'm going to try teaching myself Blender in case she wants to explore 3D modelling/animation (it may have some use in boardgame design if I can make a friend with a 3D printer...). It's another thing that makes the pen tablet appeal as I feel like if she takes to it, she is going to grow with it. She very well might be the type of person to mess around with Photoshop! Anyway, thanks a lot for the feedback - just a shame that I can't point her at your videos, but there is no way at her age she should be watching half the films you react to! I'm not even sure her mother could cope with The Descent... *-because I'm a cheap bugger at heart and once you've learned one bit of software, you can usually learn how to use similar ones like Adobe that you have to pay for
