Americans React to Isle of Man TT Sidecar Racing - This is INSANE! 

Steve, the Isle of Man course is *not* a racecourse. The TT is run on the Isle of Man's normal roads...... Of course normal traffic is suspended during the TT runs...... Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts turn up to see the TT, often from all over the World..... Sadly, there are often serious injuries and fatalities each year among the competitors, such are the risks..... One Championship winning rider (I can't recall who) was once asked "what is it like to take part in the Isle of Man TT?" He replied by saying "well, there's a green blur and a grey blur - and I try to stay on the grey one"......

I've ridden motorcycles for over half a century, and I love motoGP, and the Isle of Man TT. But like many motorcycle enthusiasts, we regard sidecar outfits and their crews as next level crazy.

Steve, you need to be careful dude. It looks like Lindsey is starting to get the motorbike bug. Some very excited smiles when discussing the TT. You'll be down to the Honda dealer before you know it.

The TT is on at the moment. This week is practice week, the actual racing starts on Saturday, 1st of June. Worth a watch if you can find coverage in the States, there will certainly be daily highlights somewhere on youtube.

Never underestimate a little old lady! My best friend was a racing sidecar passenger back in the 70s. She has also had her own bikes before and since. As far as I can remember from the 70s and 80s several riders had their wife or girlfriend as passenger.

Hi Steve and Lynsey, I used to race these on circuits in the UK in the late 70s/early 80s, several teams I raced against were husband and wife. Neil and Viv Miles were a very successful team. There was at least one all female crew at last years TT. As well as "outfits" they were also called "kneelers" because of the riding position, when I started there was no such thing as mini sidecars, it was straight onto the full sized stuff. I got into it more or less by accident, I went to buy a road bike, and was confronted with one of these things! I had a think about it, and decided to buy it and register it for road use, found out how much hassle it would be, so decided to go racing.

With any luck ( though looking out of my window towards the course it is cloudy) the practices will run. Roads close at 18:00 Superbike/Superstock at 18:30 Supersport/Supertwin at 19:20 and finally Sidecars at 20:10. Though they may run a practice today at last nights practice was cancelled due to showers. added several side car teams are husband and wife.

You ask what makes people do this. You know we're nuts over here? We invented a bunch of winter sports we can't even do without travelling to the alps because who doesn't look at a mountain and decide that jumping off it on ski's is a good idea or look at a bobsled track and think what it really needs is going down it on the most minimal sled possible head first. :)

Don't forget the 120mph is the lap speed the top speed on the straight is a lot higher

Hi Steve and Lindsay this is mad I know. Also Lindsay mentioned about the tyres being bald they are designed to be that way. The reason being bald tyres or Racing slicks as they are known effectively hold the road better than if they have tread on the tyre. Although there is a caveat to this if it rains racing slicks actually become potential death traps because they lose all grip But you really do have to check out the World Rallying Championships particularly the Welsh stages where cars are driving in excess of 100 mph through forests and mountain tracks that literally have drops of a few hundred ft off the edges of the roads on mud snow and rain especially at night. On gravel mud and tarmac through single track lanes with the supporters literally on the sides of the roads as cars go past at speed

The TT is incredible because of the length of the lap.. You only race / beat yourself on the TT, with road racing it's the same speeds and risks on a shorter course but FOR POSITION, wheel to wheel. My best sporting memory is at the NW200 (a race in N Ire) watching a pack of 4 going 4 wide at 200MPH and swapping positions down the "straight"

What happens if the driver slams on the brakes and the passenger isn't ready is an immediate demonstration of Newton's laws of motion specifically the bit that says "an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction".

At the Edinburgh bike show several years back they had a small sidecar track where you could be a passenger, so many big macho bikers gave it a go...I have never seen so many scared shaking bikers at the finish line.

Love Linseys reaction. You need to get both of you to the TT. I raced solos for 14 yrs, did two laps of Mallory Park as a sidecar passenger, and NEVER tried it again! It is hard work, + you are only inches above the track at over 100mph. I am not that brave!

A few years ago we had the great pleasure and privilege of meeting Robin and Annette Daykin, husband and wife team racing sidecars as Team Past-It, with a combined age of over 130! Annette practically forced us to come into their motorhome for tea and biscuits and a look at their photo albums, and Robin just came in with a face that suggested she does that kind of thing all the time. Lovely couple who are very much missed on the road racing scene

Hi, This year 2024 there is a sidecar outfit with Todd Ellis & Emanuelle Clément, Todd is male (29yrs old) and Emanuelle is female (27yrs old), Todd drives and Emanuelle is the passenger. They are champions on the circuits but it is their first time at the TT.

Do you think when they're trying to decide who's the driver and who's in the side car, they say, "Who's going to be Wallace and who's going to be Gromit?" :D

Steve, as has been said before. All this is done on normal (closed off for the event) public roads and not a dedicated race track. Imagine riding along at over 160mph+ on your local roads in your city and this gives you an ideal as to just how terrifying and insane and exciting this really is....its such a unique event unlike anything else! 👍🏻

Many years ago, I had a friend and his wife who raced sidecars as amateurs - she was the passenger.

Thank you for doing this one! As for what makes a person do this, my brother did it, and not long before he died (on a bike) he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. 😂 I'm not saying they all have it, but it certainly explains him lol

My dad used to race outfits and having been on his sidecar going down a straight fairly slowly in comparison it's no joke, it's unreal to watch.

A friend of mine was a racing sidecar passenger and was involved in many accidents, he finished up with a permanent limp. He did it for the adrenalin rushes.

I would recommended you also watch some videos about the Isle of Man that is not about TT or road racing; fascinating as this is. As the island is such a beautiful and interesting place.

Steve, I'm in my late seventies now and when I was seventeen I went on the back on my cousins motor bike and we did a speed of one hundred miles per hour, without helmets. It was very exhilarating but so dangerous. He was an expert driver and raced at Brands Hatch.

Hey Lindsay, The tyres are supposed to be ‘bald’ as this give better grip, they’re referred to as racing “Slicks”. ‘Normal’ tyres with cuts and grooves on them are actually for wet weather. The tread pattern is designed to give the surface water on the road somewhere to escape from otherwise the tyre would skate over the top of the wet road with zero grip. It’s known as “Aqua Planing” ( pronounced ‘Plane-ing’). 1980’s Group B Rally Cars next please!!

Im sitting watching this with the sound of the TT practices going on in the background lol the course is literally 150 yards down the road. My Uncle used to ride as passenger in a sidecar when i was younger and I had a cousin who had a lap record In the TT for a short while

In 2022 a father and his passenger who was his son died in a side car crash at the TT. And yes, Women do compete at the TT, but the numbers per year are in single digits.

Side cars had 2 or 3 laps of Practise tonight. They go past the garage I work at quite slow at about 60 - 80 mph but are accelerating really hard on their way to Ramsey Hairpin. Average lap speeds of just under 120 mph. Nest to watch would be an on baord lap. Pieter Hickmans fastest recorded lap is good.

I've never seen this before, and it's nuts! I was a bit wild as a teenager and even then there's just no way 😂

I worked with a guy who raced sidecar....he crashed and his passenger died, he never raced again.....

Brilliant fun, everything seems so much faster when you are that close to the ground.

The Sidecar racers are Truly Crazed ... There are many women racers who compete at the top level, either in a mixed or an all lady racing outfut. Lots of married couples also compete together

There are a number of women who do sidecar racing, a lot being husband and wife but some are unrelated. Most women are passengers because they are more flexible and lighter then men but there are a couple of female drivers as well. In this year's TT World Champions Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement (who are husband and wife) are competing in their first TT. Other females competing this year in sidecars are Vicky Cooke (Passengering for Michael Russell) and Maria Costello (driving with Gary Wheeler in the chair and who is also racing in Solos in the Supertwin class).

You both need to watch the Isle of man TT track being completed by a purpose built Subaru WRX race car built by i think prodrive. Its worth a watch. It was driven by a british rally car driver. I cant of hand remember his name.

Riding a motorcycle fast is exillerating. You have to book the Isle of Man TT a year in advance. I had a friend who went every year. I have always loved being on a bike. My partner had bikes, and you have to learn to be a good pillion rider. You must lean into corners with the rider. You must be relaxed so you don't throw off the balance. The sidecar racing has always been a real love of mine. The passengers in these races are as dedicated as the riders and are co- dependent. Years ago, racer Randy Mimola had a GP bike remodelled to take a pillion and would take them round the track at speed to give them the experience. Going really fast on a motorbike amazing. I have also been lucky enough to be driven at speed by an advanced driver and have never felt so safe in a car.❤❤👵🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌹🌹

Hi all, I used to be a passenger in a racing outfit many years ago. I raced at local circuits in Northern England... it's good fun! I've never raced at the Isle of Man although I have done the circuit many times on a road bike. Learning the corners (which is a must) on a 37 mile circuit must be a task in itself, never mind the endurance required of a passenger on a two lap race. They have my respect! The next level... well I have a friend that mounted a Vampire jet engine on an electric milk float which he raced at Santa Pod Drag Raceway.... not for me thanks!

You used to go and watch Grass Track side car racing when I was a child with my Dad. Thats done on Grass and not a road. The side cars are not so space age and are normally welded together in a shed! lol

Slidys may be nuts but they are a generous bunch who race the tracks and stick together off. Hubby x passenger and yep he’s nuts. Maria castello is a bike racer and sidecar driver check her out she’s amazing. TT if you get the bug that’s it. Iom is a special place even without tt can’t wait for October just a pity the steamracket company is in charge of the ferries.

As a former motorcyclist, all I can say is anyone willing to compete in the Isle of Man TT is utterly lacking in any self preservation instinct, and the sidecar folks take that to a level I don't even have words for. I would never ever in a million years consider racing in the Isle of Man TT, but I would fancy attacking "the twisties" at a more sensible speed.

This is insane, definitely not something I could ever attempt even at half that speed 😂

If they brake before the passenger is ready... then the passenger obviously wins first place and the outfit comes in second! lol

I'm going to the Isle of Mann on Saturday for a whole week of TT insanity 🤘racing starts on Saturday you should try to find a way to watch some of it, though I'm not sure where you would find it on American TV, they show highlights in England on ITV4 and there is Live streaming on the internet with TT+ Live Pass but that costs money

Each year several motorbike riders get injured or killed & spectators can get injured if the bikes crashes

Lindsay, I think you would enjoy Formula One! All you need to do is choose a driver to support so you get involved with that driver’s race. Back in the 80s, I discovered the Indy 500, and annual race, and some time later, came across another race but instead of the oval circuit, there were curves, bends and long straights, making everything way more exciting. I had discovered a Formula 1 race and I was hooked! I became a supporter of Nelson Piquet and even met him at the track a few times after the F1 came to Australia.
