Crocheting an amigurumi doll can be tricky. If you don't get the toy exactly right, it can look creepy. Your kids will be running to you in the middle of the night screaming, "Mommy, that doll is looking at me!" That's not exactly the reaction we were hoping for. These seven tips are going to help you crochet an adorable amigurumi doll, but even if you're going for macabre, these tips will work for you too. #amigurumi #amigurumidoll #crochet

My solution for the face since I have no patience for embroidery is needle felting it, the faces I did years ago are still perfectly in place

I love these tips. I watched some use embroidery yarn to attach limbs thru the whole project. I’d like to suggest using fishing line. Since everything is hidden you can use 30 pound test line, black. It will never break, I’m sure. It’s something to think about and you have line forever more. If fish can’t break it neither can a child.( unless they are a Houdini , all bets are off) lol💖

Have you heard of staggering your incs and decs. They no longer form a line. Kristie Tullus explains this well in her ami tips. I use granitos stitch and yarn for eyes, I use one long strand to do both eyes one needle on either end, pay attention to tension and count the wraps as I sew them in, to get them even. Jean Greenhowe designed great eye techniques for her knitted toys. I sew on bits twice for strength. I start with whip stitch, the mattress stitch for the second round. I leave 4× the length of seam + 11/2 inches for (LST)- leave sewing tail. I have never run short with this formula.

another good trick for sturdy necks is to use inexpensive nerf darts to stiffen the neck. these are firm yet pliable, and make a great neckbone. you can stuff around them or add more than one if your neck is particularly large. for holes i have been known to go in and reinforce that area by stitching through/under the places where the holes are. if you do it carefully it's just enough to close the holes without being obvious. Love all the tips and tricks, thanks so much.

Another thing I never do when I make my dolls either feet up to head or head down to feet and that is I NEVER sew my heads on or my arms. My neck trick is to see how many stitches the neck opening is and match the same number of stitches in the pattern for the head and continue the pattern at that point. My preference is feet up to head. I attach the arms as I crochet. I split the arms into two halfs, bottom and top. Start attacking at the bottom half and next round I finish attacking the top half of arms. It works perfectly and seamlessly with not sewing, or holes. Oh!... doesn't forget that tooth brush handle inside the neck with filling around it for stability and softness in one step. These tips work great every time.

To make an amigurumi doll stand up..another popular RU-vid crocheter makes the dolls shoes then cuts out cardboard (thick enough so doll can stand) in the shape of the amigurumi dolls shoes and then glues the cardboard cutouts inside before stuffing them..it works well and the dolls do stand up quite nicely. I suppose you can do this for the feet too by following the same method .

I am a newbie to crocheting and amigurumi. Stumbled on your very informative channel and can't stop watching all the tips to making an amigurumi toy. One request for your consideration. Could you do a video just on stuffing, say the head, body, arms, nose to the legs. It's a little hard for me, a beginner to visualize what is stuffing a bit at a time, how to stuff the head round without wrinkles, etc. Also when you say to leave a long yarn for stitching, do you have a guideline on how long is long. Many thanks. By the way, I'm subscribed to your channel to learn more.
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet Год назад
Thank you so much for the suggestion!!! I love when people share what they would like to see more of! And leaving a long tail depends on how much sewing you need to do, if it's a small section you just need it long enough to sew that part. If it's a bigger section you obviously need more. A lot is learned by trial and error! That's how I learned!! 🧶🧶🧶

I love all your amigurumi dolls and animals. I am wondering if you use the sport yarn, it is a little stiffer and is mostly made with cotton. Also the vintage yarn you use, is their a trick to help not fuzz up your project too much? My last question is.... what do you use to add blush? Thank you for your time. You amazing at crocheting!
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet 4 года назад
Thank you so much! Do you mean a sport weight yarn? If so then yes, I've used that but if you mean a brand then no, I haven't. The Berroco Vintage does not pill at all or become more fuzzy. I like my toys to have a tiny bit of fuzz but that's just my personal preference. For the blush I just use a cheap brush and human blush. But I do know some people use a crayon or even chalk pastels! Thanks so much!!

Hi Elise Thank you for sharing these tips! They will definitely come in handy if and when I crochet dolls and toys. I’ve only made two so far and my stuffing technique needs work as I didn’t stuff the first toy a hippo in a tutu very well but my niece loved it (4 or 5 years ago) it’s probably hidden in her toy box now. And the valentines bear I made for the birth of my cousins son (4 years ago), I wasn’t impressed with my attaching the parts techniques, but we live and learn but I’m too much of a perfectionist. I’ll see how I go with my current temperature snake 🐍 (PlanetJune) only eyes and tongue to attach 😆 keeping it simple. As I used cotton for my hippo and polyester for the bear, would you say that Stylecraft DK or Aran would be equivalent to your Paintbox? I have various colours leftover from a blanket I’m making as I over bought as too many colours to choose from and I couldn’t decide at the time 😊 If I visited the USA which store would you recommend I visit to purchase some yarn? Thank you again I’m sure I’ll use these tips as I love the idea of put blush to emphasis the cheeks on a doll/toy. I also didn’t like to look of the neck on the valentines bear so I stuck a ribbon bow tie around his neck to cover the imperfections. Take care and stay safe and well 🙏🏼💗🧶🦋😻
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet Год назад
I have never tried using the Stylecraft for amigurumi but I can't see why it wouldn't work well!! And if you come to the US you might want to go to a Joanns or Michaels if you're looking for big box stores. But we also have lots of small independent locally yarn shops too!! 🧶🧶🧶

I've been checking out different blush ideas, but I'm curious about how well they stay? Like if I used a regular blush, would it last through washing? I haven't heard of the chalk pastels you mentioned in another comment but you can bet I'll try it now :) Ive heard of using a sharpie, but I haven't figured out how to get a nice blush look with it yet!
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet 3 года назад
I haven't experimented a lot with this idea. I have used regular blush but it doesn't stay on there for long. I never wash my handmade toys but I doubt it could withstand that. I've heard of one designer that actually uses a crayon. If you find something you love let me know! ❤️
@nryane
@nryane 2 года назад
As a cloth doll maker, I would put on blush and additional face colors, using makeup and fine sharpies, along with colored pencils. Then with a spray-on matte clear fixative, I would spray only the face (hair and the rest of body covered with protective layer of plastic), especially on the areas where the added colors were placed. The spray allowed the facial features to last longer. (Because I’ve never washed a doll face made this way, I’m not sure whether or not washing the areas would show maintenance of the colors.) Blessings!

I've been looking into this as well and watched a video from Green Dog Crochet where she used acrylic fabric paint (diluted with water). I would think this would hold up better in the wash. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gvUrR4kYgkk.html

Just discovered your channel and am loving the videos. I have crocheted for 50 years but have only recently begun ami. I have a question about using blush....I have seen it recommended in other places but always wonder how long it will last. Especially for dolls intended for sale, it seems to me you have to consider they will likely need washing if they are given to children. I would like to sell my creations, but am having trouble wrapping my head around the philosophy of it. Do you just make a doll/toy as you conceive it, or should everything be made so as to be appropriate for children? Or do you assume the purchaser will make that decision? I know this is long, but I have no fellow crocheters to discuss with. Thanks!
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet 3 года назад
I'm so glad you like the videos!! And for blush I add it knowing it won't last super long. But I have seen others use dry pastel paints to blush the cheeks, which I imagine would last much longer. For selling I always recommend my toys not for small children, just because there are a lot of choking hazards on the toys I make. But if I wanted to sell for small children I would keep that in mind and not use safety eyes, buttons or other choking hazards.

I don't know if you've covered it, but how do you add the blush? What products and tools?
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet Год назад
There's a couple of different ways you can do it, most of the time I just use a brush and makeup blush (doesn't last very long), you can also rub regular crayons on the area and the last one is to use a brush with pastel chalks. Hope that helps! ❤️

Can amigurumi toys be washed? If yes, how would you do so? Any precautions to take?
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet Год назад
It depends on the yarn. You can always spot clean a toy. But you need to check with the yarn label to see if the yarn can be washed and how to dry it! Hope that helps! 🧶🧶🧶

What is a ‘halo’
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet 3 года назад
I should have clarified that in the video! Sorry! It's the fuzziness of the yarn. So a slight halo would mean a little bit of fuzziness. Hope that helps! 🧶

How do I fix a crochet doll wobbly head that I already crochet on?

I would add something like a crocheted scarf so that it looks pretty but provides stability. 🧶🧶🧶

@@EliseRoseCrochet The pattern says to do the 1st foot and finish it off and then do the 2nd foot but do a slip stitch and then chain 18.. I understand that.. The part I am having a problem with is attaching the 1st foot to where it all lines up evenly like it shows in the picture.
