Well, without amy's peel out( ? ) In amy rose in s3k, some of the levels could've been unbeatble. I guess E-122 psi had to get rid of giant step so he could add this... weird peel out thingy? Kinda sad, to be honest.

One key thing you are forgetting is that E-122-Psi had Giant Steps at all. I feel like playing as her in Sonic 3 is not the same without it.

Personally, I was pleasently surprised with just how well Amy's abilities work in Sonic 1, which is even more impressive when one considers that the level layouts where never designed with Amy in mind. I think that simply the fact of Amy having different jumping abilities that can give Mario a run for his money (normal jump, the higher hammer jump and the giant steps that cover horizontal terrain) as well as those that help add precision to the platforming action like the Hammer Whirl (which works like Mario's mid-air stomp) makes playing Sonic 1's more platforming oriented stages to be actually fun, and really makes me wish shed had been added to 2011's Sonic CD re-release instead of Tails, especially since that was her debut game and had more right to show up than the overrepresented fox. While the Mania Adventures final episode was a wonderful surprise since I always wanted to see Classic Amy being animated in a cartoon, the game made IMO the terrible mistake of leaving her out, which is only made worse by how the developers choose instead Mighty and Ray, who I felt where not that different from Tails and Knuckles. Hopefully the next 2-D game will feature the pink hammer wielding hedgie as playable from the very start.

If Amy Rose would've been the star of the series to begin with, it would've been dead on arrival, or it wouldn't have made much of a difference. You see, there are these things out there we call "demographics". The Sega Genesis back in the day was touted as the "grown-up" console alternative to the "kiddy" and "childish" Super Nintendo. The Genesis wouldn't have gotten far with a Pink Little Girl Hedgehog as it's mascot. Now, if it's audience were different, maybe it could've been, but it would've been a disaster. "Gender Equality" doesn't sell consoles.
