Not sure if you are joking or being real. But even a shower can be broken down into smaller steps. Open bathroom door. Close it. Turn on hot water. Let it run. Brush teeth. Hop into shower. Shampoo hair. Put shower gel on loofah. Etc. The hardest part is always getting started. Literally getting up from wherever we are to go do the stuff we don't want to do but must do. Been there, still there.

What works for me is simply looking around and figuring out what i have to do, do it on the spot, and THEN write it down and mark it as complete. Making a list of too many things I have to do stresses me out, so I simply decide on the spot what I'm doing next as soon as I think about it and then i write it down as if i planned it all along

(ADHD here) lists have saved my life! This has helped me, maybe it helps you/others: I have made lists of stuff I need for certain occasions and taped them to my door (i.e. work: keys, food, water, sunglasses). That way instead of running around every morning I just check the list and then I can go to work. For the tasks, you don't need to make a list everytime you do it, you can just make the list once and then every time you need to do the task you just consult the list and tick off each step in your mind, hopefully also releasing dopamine and serotonin that way :-)

Yes! I keep a calendar on my phone of what I need to do. I look at it first thing in the morning, knowing I’ll go on many side quests and writing them in the calendar at the end of the day. I feel very accomplished and what didn’t get done is the start of the next day! This way I get many things done and stop worrying about how or when it’s getting done. I also add to the calendar as I think of things to do or as they arise.
@trapfethen
@trapfethen Месяц назад
You can help that by simply using the "FNO" method. There are usually tasks we feel we need to do that really are not that important, or can logically wait one more day. So you simply say "F*&k no" and cross it out deliberately. You get the little kick of "cancelled plans" and a smaller todo list. This is similar to what our brains do when we procrastinate, but this way you have a say in what is put off rather than it being seemingly random.

That's why stimulants work so well for ADHD... helps a lot with motivation and in turn, feeling rewarded for accomplishing the things you were motivated to do, because we lack the natural brain chemical stimulants like dopamine and adrenaline, and in turn, also lack the feel good reward chemicals like serotonin.

The last part about crossing out the most difficult thing and breaking it down, might not work for some people with ADHD or some tasks. For me when I break them down it just looks like more work so I become less motivated. So instead I just write it as one thing That way it feels easier to do. But again depending on the person and the task, I do advise trying her step first. Like she said so it can become more satisfying to you when you cross out more things. For those of you with ADHD and having a hard time building habits I highly recommend reading Atomic Habits. And don't feel like you have to read it all in one go take your time. Just open it and read it for just one minute a day. You might end up reading more. Also it really helps that there is a short summary for each chapter and illustrations to explain methods, ideas, and techniques.

I think it’s the mental load of all the steps of taking the shower paired with potential shame over time blindness, forgetting steps, etc. for me. It’s not just “get in shower, wash ass.” It’s also not wanting to get cold before getting in the shower, dreading losing track of time and the hot water running out, not wanting to get cold when the hot inevitably runs out anyway, dreading the guilt that no one else will be able to shower after me, not wanting to get cold when I get out of the shower, dreading the guilt of forgetting steps or having to skip them because I lost track of time, on and on and on. It’s an entire mental load just to take a 5 (20) minute shower. You’re not alone.

I do like making to do lists and breaking things down to make the tasks less daunting, but I have to block off time specifically to do the mental work of making the list and if the broken-down steps accumulate too much, the quantity of tasks then becomes exactly as overwhelming as the bigger task was alone. Something that helps me is to brain dump all the tasks I have in one column, pick the top 3-5 and put those in a separate column. This is now the todo list. I break those tasks down as needed and remind myself constantly, “one thing at a time”. If i finished those three, I cross them off and pick three more. I still struggle but it helps

I also really like doing daily to do lists with colours corresponding to how ‘hard’ the task is for me. Like it could be a really simple task but on that particular day it might just be something I’m really finding resistance to so I write it in red. The hardness of that very task could change day to day so I try to keep track of the patterns. ‘Easy’ tasks are in blue and ‘neutral’ tasks that I don’t feel strongly about either way are in black. Sometimes I’ll think a task is hard but then my desire to cross that task off to get it out of the way helps me get it done quicker. Some tasks I thought I was ‘neutral’ about end up becoming things I put off because I tricked myself into thinking it would be simple. I enjoy colour coding things for my visual brain it helps a lot! Hope somebody else can find this useful.

this was the General accepted theory for a long time but there has been some recent and very interesting research that has come out that has essentially disproven the idea of chemical imbalance being responsible for anxiety depression. another interesting thing is that the ADHD brain does not actually look any different than the normal average person's brain. Many diseases can be seen in the brain of a person who lives with it but that is not the case with ADHD. This is really empowering to individuals who experience it because it means that you have much more power over it and you're not set with some defective level of chemicals that you're always going to have. the activities you suggested are great and they are absolutely helpful but I wanted to share the updated information because it's important we understand it as we have been misunderstood for a long time and that makes it quite hard to get help. that is not to say the things you suggested are not helpful, they are. I just am excited to share the progress we have made in our scientific understanding of these neural divergences.

Well my ADHD brain completely spaced out halfway through the video because your diagram of receptors reminded me of something else, so I had to rewatch the video all over again.

I don't like to do lists, too much anxiety so i make DONE lists. Instead of writing things To Do for the day, i write on my calendar what I have done at the end of everyday to check my activity levels for each day. It's nuch easier for me personally and helps hold me more accountable. Also I'm never satisfied with anything lol

Nice tip, so much easier when the tasks are atomic. I guess a WBS chart is for ADHD folks.
