Let's talk a little about the concept of 'artistic research', and why it's at the same time super simple and self-evident, but also maybe not really! I talk about drag queens and youtube comedians, and my own path to knowledge through university.

"Making good art is 100% subjective and 100% dependent on the voice inside of you". Thank you for this. It comforts me in thinking that I can never fail in art - it is subjective, no one can really criticize it, except me.

Sorry but art is a bit subjective and mostly technical and objective… there is a lot from art that is extremely technical from the craft used to produce a piece of art to the delivery and meaning all of it can be extremely technical and objective. Also the validation of art doesnt come only from your own validation, art doesnt exist in a vacuum.

@@nntblstin my opinion, there's no way art is mostly objective. the main thing about art is that everyone perceives it differently, and everyone has a different point of view when it comes to what they perceive as beautiful, emotional, disgusting etc. you CAN talk about a painting being made by someone lacking skill or a song sounding like made by a 12 year old, but that's also sometimes the point. things can look, feel or sound like just a mishmash of lacklustered crap, but there will always be a group of people loving it. same way, you could have a landscape painted by someone whose art looks like photography, and despite that there will STILL be someone to hate it there are 8 billion (or milliards, depends where you're from 💋) people on this planet and everyone has a unique enough mind that they are able to have their own opinion about art. that's my view on it

@@maksiulightning Im not saying that there is no subjectivity in art, im gonna rephrase a bit this, people give way too much importance to subjectivity in art wich is not a good thing. when the video say 100% subjective and 100% self validated its pretty easy to doubt of all the video remember "Only a Sith think in absolutes" Now going back to yout idea, if the of making a song that "sounds like it was made by a 12 year old kid" its a concious decision, that can express certain ideas, then we can say its posible that this song belongs to acertain artistic language and can be art and meaningful but there is a longer way to walk yet. For example (and in really loose way and for the sake of argument) we can differenciate "medieval art" from "art of the rennasaince" because of the lack of perspective and the use of religious imagery and a series of objective parameters that needs to be stablished first to make the difference between pieces of both periods, a bit in the same way we can say this song is house and this one is dubstep, there is a lot of objective parameters to qualify something as an artistic piece or not. Now all of this parameters need to be also validated by the people that participate of something that George Dickie called the ïnstitution of art"this recognition comes from a whole group of people, institutions, media and theorist and market that recognize such as "art" this recognition comes from a bunch of parasmeters that can make something artistic, one part is the fact that the author can recognize something as art and self validate the idea of a piece of work as art but this doesnt happen in a vacuum because of the preceding ideas in this text. So yes, art subjective and also objective in great manner, and all of this doesnt happen because the author say it this "100% subjectivity and 100% self validation" is dubious to say the least. (by the way the milliards = billion thing is something called short and long count wich is an increidibly interesting topic)

Really relate with growing up in a non-musical family, tought everything needs to be functional, studying maths and sciences. Discovering and exploring creativity is such an eye-opener. Learning from failing and feeling.

I always appreciated your videos and content (even though I have zero musical ability or time for production etc - but I love learning about the "process") in order to be a more knowledgeable about electronic music overall, but I truly appreciated this video. Art for the sake of Art is important to the artist as experimentation to help them learn and grow, and it's important to other artists to expand their knowledge of what is possible. I feel like this video is talking about this concept from a different angle. Taking classes to learn an artistic craft is a way to learn all of the technical aspects about the craft - learning 'how to...' What school doesn't give is that subjective sense of what's good and what isn't. The technical knowledge can get you maybe 75-80% there, but that last big is learned from experimentation, and seeing how others react. It's the smallest part of the skill but arguably the most important, and also the hardest to learn.

Nice one, Oscar. This fits to they saying: What sounds good, is good. But it's not that simple. Of course, basics are undisputable. You won't put a C minor triad above a C major chord. But in the end, it is just finding out how the hell is this gonna work for me. And once you're more confident, you try the next step. So do I. I'm currently fiddling around with effects that I didn't dare to use a few weeks ago. Let's say the Vocoder, the Gate or something like that. And I've found out that you can make really cool musiic by using these things on drum loops. These are things that get me excited at the moment. So what, then I don't publish something for a while. But the thing is that such a research (Using Vocoder and Gate on drums was shown on some videos, so I tried to figure it out myself) will help you find your musical voice.

By trade I'm a 3D artist. As a hobby, I generate music. The hobby concept also works because the trade art tells me I need to have good "follow through" similar to how a baseball player swinging at a pitch only hits their best baseball when they follow through their swing. I love this metaphor because even in practice of generating artwork, hobby or not, I have to see it through the process. It's strange how influence can happen from a variety of experiences and observations, but that variety spices our life! And hey, thank you for sharing a bit about yourself :) there's the human element to all of this!

Reminds me of Rick Rubens rule that if someone has an idea you must try it because the idea suggested might not sound like a good idea until it is actually inserted and you hear it. Good stuff

It's a simple concept, but it requires meta-thinking, and while you think about it. The way of described it made me think of how important the feeling is, when interacting with art or making art. Just the feeling you get from experiencing it in the moment, that's often a great starting point.

It’s so cool to see you’re talking about more complex concepts, which likely matter more for some people including me. Perfecting craftsmanship is obviously all cool, but personally I would rather listen to a honest performance that wasn’t put together perfectly, than listen to a perfectly polish product with clear target goals in mind.

This makes perfect sense. Maybe the season by so many successful artists come from an art school education, which should be directed towards exploration and evaluation of ideas. It's no criticism, many genres have evolved from "House" which was driven by the availability of affordable sample tech and other sync enabled midi tools, random ideas were thrown into the machine and out pops a repetitive groove. Style over content. It caught fire in the music industry, everybody wanted one. Even the best of EDM producers are sometimes inclined towards a dependence on the technical, finding an intensely driven loop or a catchy phrase and hammering it to death. All composers have a bit of luck and stumbling over something interesting while experimenting is a primal element in music. The difference with EDM has been that unlike human repetition, machines have only recently learned about variation and feel although the best EDM artists have used effects for decades to make some ot those things possible long before the computer could give us percentages for probability and limitless cross modulation. Even so, unless the artist is prepared to refine ideas, compare them in different contexts or even use them elsewhere, this can still become Frankenstein's monster

It might sound funny but this video changed my whole perspective about art. I think most of us block ourselves from being creative because of the possibility of not being liked. But after all, art is %100 subjective as you said so you are absolutely free to what you wanna do with your art. And I'm sure it will be interesting to other people because it's %100 authentic.

This reminds me of a metaphor from agile software development. In this metaphor, there are two pottery courses. In the first course, students are told that they should submit a perfect jug at the end of the semester and spend most of the time perfecting this one jug. In the second course, students are told that they will be graded on the number of jugs they produce, regardless of quality. At the end of the semester, it turns out that the students in the second course, who have made many jugs, also produced the higher-quality jugs. Through constant practice and trying out different techniques, they significantly improved their skills. The students in the first course, who focused on theory and planning, had fewer practical skills in the end, and their jugs were not as good.

This is true. I had a feeling for music when i started making it. I made drum and bass becouse i felt that style was right for me. I expresed a lot of my emotions trough and when i get a good feedback from my speakers this where i would get inspired. Later when i tryed other styles i lost that original connection. I had stop producing music for a month or two and in that time i was hoping that i will forget about dnb. What can i say. Styles are like relationship partners. Once you get in the relationship deep enough to understand yourself and your goals dont change it. Just change your bpm values slightly. Maybe eventualy you will find that perfect spot where you will know what hear and feel are one and the same.

yes try things out, but if you are pushing yourself to put things out to others view, that's where most people fails. you should re-consider if you are doing it for the process that you enjoy, or you are here for the potential outcome that your network will give you some attention for your work.

Not just the research but art in general only needs the artits's own validation. You shouldn't make art for money and fame. When you get the mindset of doing art for money and fame you'll probably not be expressing yourself truly through your craft, when you set goals you create barriers, when you create barriers you lose your freedom, once you lose your freedom, you're not making art anymore, you are making a product to put on a stand, and that's not what art is about.
