That was my takeaway as well, you could say the exact same thing about a stationary bike. If your doing cardio on a machine, you need to keep an eye on your RPM and resistance or heart rate, that's just part of using the machine correctly. Video should be titled "An Exercise Physiologist Reveals Why She Never Reads While Doing Cardio"
This uses the same logic that the term and notion of "unskilled labor" stems from, which resigns any "task" executed lazily to the "task" itself, in an equally lazy and disengaged fashion. We've all seen videos of someone masterfully and efficiently cling wrapping a pallet of goods for shipment, laying bricks, squeegeeing a window, etc. which all demonstrate the extent to which anything can be done exceptionally. That requires effort, intent, and hundreds of hours of practice, all culminating in a skill/talent. Just as ANYTHING can be attempted or executed poorly, laxidasilly, sloppily or novicely, and at best for some comedic value or the slightest chuckle. The point(s) being: 1) everything exists on a spectrum; and 2) it's not necessarily what you do, but HOW that makes all the difference, with the primary HOW being heavily dictated by perspective and perception, and while it "can" at times be measurable, in many regards efficacy, like beauty, is highly subjective.
I only used the elliptical and lost 40 Ibs with my healthy eating of course. I tried to change and mix it up, but the elliptical was the only tool that raises my heartbeats fast and burns my calories faster.
@@rogelioarmentasolorzano3848 I've been doing it for 45 mins every day and have lost a lot of pounds and usually loose an average of 450 calories per workout
thats great that you can use other equipment. I am 57 and if it wasnt for the elliptical I couldnt get a good workout. I have bad knees, back and neck issues. It sucks to get old but this machine has been a life saver. Without it I wouldnt be able to exercise. I get a good cardio work out and able to achieve good muscle tone and muscle strengthening. It depends on your age, physical issues, and medical issues as to what is good for each person.
I thought she was going to reveal a flaw with the machine or something physiological. But it's like walking or calisthenics: it's up to the person to motivate and push themselves on whatever their fitness goals are.
If people want to watch tv while on the elliptical and if that makes them do some exercise as opposed to not do any, then what this woman said is already completely worthless lol. People who wanna take their cardio to professional levels wouldnt even use an elliptical in the first place, not because it is useless but because there are more challenging alternatives. People who want some distraction while exercising are 9 to 5 workers who want to improve their health but dont wanna be bored to death while doing it. There is no problem in that given the person is getting some considerably intense cardio going on.
@jack_hono one was blaming anyone in this video. She stated what the research said. People get distracted when on ellipticals, apparently. I love the elliptical, but if I didn’t have my audiobooks or video streaming, I would find it incredibly boring. I do, however, have to watch my cadence to make sure I’m not slacking.
What a terrible video. Dont listen to this lady. Ellipticals are amazing machines and can be a great way to lose weight and stay fit. Boo this video I say. Boo
3 months elliptical use 1 and 1/2 stone lost and counting, if it works it works. Too many perfectionists and purists that will write something off if it isn’t the best or their approved method of workout. If it works it works, work smarter not harder. If you hate running but find the elliptical better suited to you and it enables you to actually get up and workout then why not.
This advice is wrong on so many levels. The elliptical is a good machine to use, whatever gets your blood flowing and in the gym is good. The level on intensity depends on the person. You can also use a treadmill without ever running, or a squat rack without ever increasing the weights. Folks - feel free to use the elliptical and push yourself with intensity. The first step is to get active.
Many people don't work hard enough on the elliptical...? Many people stand next to the squat rack on their phones too long, does that make the squat rack bad?
I love the elliptical. I always use it with resistance. The elliptical is great for a full body workout. If I am reading, it doesn't last long because my workout gets so intense that I can't focus on reading. Currently, I'm at 8000 strides on the elliptical, at a resistance of 10, and 15 incline, I burn about 700 calories per 1 hour workout on it.
I enjoy running, but after having my baby I find my joints and both my achilles tendons hurt while running. Even when I stretch and warm up. Thus my next alternative is the elliptical, and honestly I don't feel that pain anymore while using it.
@@davegrice9546 how is she right ? if someone watch a movie on elliptical, hes not getting 100% out of the exercise, thats right, but if the guy do that cause hes a lazy fucker over weight and he cant do exercises cause he hate it, is it better then watching the movie lying in his bed and getting fatter ? what she said is totally dumb
@@davegrice9546 so is cycling on a bike if you are reading or watching a video…. Its not the machine’s fault… its the persons fault… probably shows that she herself can’t work hard enough and doesn’t have the grit to continue… that is not the machines fault…
I go to the gym everyday for years, I have yet to find a person who reads a frigging book or watches movies while using elliptical. Cut the cr@p, people just put music on and get pumped, yes sometimes they check their phone because a message came, but so do people on a treadmill or bike. Don't impose your personal bias to everyone while rubbing your physiologist credentials to our face, the best exercise is the one you enjoy and are consistent with.
I mean I bought an elliptical March 6th and have changed nothing else and I’m down 25 pounds as of this morning. Each their own I guess. Watched every Marvel movie on Disney+ starting Star Wars now lol
You did good… her concept is 100% flawed.. you could practically do any sports being lazy ass…. Jog, swim or even cycling on a machine and watch videos and do no effort…. It is all a mental game… to each his/her own…. this video is just useless… doesn’t prove one bit why anyone else shouldn’t do Elliptical……do what you are doing 💪
cardio is cardio if you ENJOY THE ELLIPTICAL USE IT , ITS GOOD FOR LOSING WEIGHT!!! IF YOU WANAN BE A TRACK RUNNER OR GET INTO SHAPE FOR A RUN TREADMILL AND STAIR MASTER BUT TO LOSE WEIGHT ELLIPTICAL
Ellipticals r ideal for those with knee issues. A treadmill has more drag. I don’t advise doing anything but working out in gym. I am able to focus on a spot to right or left and not feel my body. Disconnect if u will.
As long as the watts are still reasonable, one can be as distracted as they wanna be. They're still likely going to be putting in enough watts to be able to stop after 20 minutes if they do it daily, to hit the minimum recommended cardio for cardiovascular health. The intensity doesn't have to be that serious. You can do a reasonably brisk-walk for 20 minutes a day and still be good. If you wanna push it a bit harder to the equivalent of like a jog or a slower run, then you could do about 10 minutes a day (more is better, but still). It's often a good idea to mix it up, move in different ways, use different types of machines or activities that aren't machines. It's not necessary, but it keeps things interesting and the body will be more capable of different things. Not everyone is interested in the slightest in doing things like sports or side to side activities, and they don't have to for cardio, so that's good. Ellipticals are one of the absolute best pieces of equipment for cardio. Not shit on the joints, not high resistance, so there's little interference with weight training. It uses the whole body, so it's going to have more of an effect, and also yea it's less localised, so one body part isn't going to start to build lactic acid, which then affects one's weight training, since it's more dispersed over the whole body. She came across kind of like she's looking down on the piece of equipment, which is really not warranted when it's one of the best options out there, that almost anyone can do, and there's not many draw backs as far as comfort and stuff. When factoring in everything that makes a good cardio activity for a general population, it might actually be the best by a fair bit.
Lately running has been giving me shin splints and, ultimately, a mild stress fracture. Unfortunately, this means the elliptical is one of my only options for cardio while I wait out this situation. Still gets my heart rate up so I'll count that as a win.
You can actually make the excercise way more dynamic by changing postures and switching back and forth between legs and arms and push and pull. Also bending the knees, or vary how you place your feet (tiptoe vs flat vs heel) makes a whole lot of difference.
Get an elliptical that doesn't plug into anything, so you have to keep spinning or it turns off. Then you can't just coast. Also do it on the highest resistance you can
I dont know why some trainers or peole say its pointless. i have to use this because i tore my PCL last summer at the beach and now i cant really sprint because its harsh on my knees nor can i go heavy anymore. So now biking, treadmill and elliptical are my best friends for protecting my knees. Its hard to workout my quad muscles this machine is the only that gives me a good burn for my quads since lunges or leg extensions are harsh.
This broad is a wonderful example of the idea that just because somebody is supposed to be an "authority" on a subject doesn't mean what they have to say has any value. Doesn't matter if you're reading or watching TV if you spent 30 minutes on the elliptical 7 days a week you are going to burn a ton of calories your heart rate will increase and you will reap all the benefits. The fact that the elliptical is so low impact and the fact that it gets both your legs and your arms moving increasing calorie burn or just a couple of reasons why it is such an awesome machine. Lady... just because you can make a video about something, doesn't mean that you should
Elliptical machine is Jakob Ingebrigtsen's choice for alternative training, if injured or otherwise in need of variation. Its extremely similar to running, without the impact.
increase resistance at times and focus on your workout, not distractors. A cycling class will help too. Ellipticals and Cycling are good for those who don't want to put pressure on their feet and knees, especially older people
Liss cardio also causes you to burn fat when resting. And not everyone can do Hiit training. The best cardio or workout routines are the ones that you can stick to.
Sad to hear. Exercise that use both upper and lower body at the same time have the most benefit for brain function. She just sounds a bit like I'm too cool for school type. I'd rather see someone reading a book on an exercise machine than not at all and just at home in the couch. If you like the elliptical machine keep using it! I definitely do myself.
If you don't put the effort into any exercise or workout routine you won't get great results. It's not the equipment or programs fault. It's yours. You get out what you put into it
Dang ... I wanted to put my 2nd TV in my exercise room to watch the news and run on my elliptical at the same time. LOL ... if you watch TV and folding your clothes you could forget what you're doing. If your on any type of exercise machine it very hard to forget what you're doing. Granted it can distract you ... if it does simply turn off the TV if it interfers with your workout!!! But whats a better way to watch TV and burn fat at the same time? Watching TV on the couch or an exercise machine?
I disagree here. Everyone is different. Some cant squat so they leg press...tredmill wont work for everyone...neither would elliptical...but it worked for me more than a tredmill has. Each to their own. This advice doesnt apply to everyone. Theres to many factors to consider.
It shouldnt matter if you are reading a book or watching a movie, your body is moving either way, same calories burnt. Your mind may be somewhere else, but you are still using up the same amount of calories. This makes no sense.
I notice when I get on my elliptical after bingeing PCP that I often forget that I am exercising and sometimes think I am Link from The Legend of Zelda hiking through some enchanted forest.
Get back on, this idiot doesnt know what she's talking about. Keep your heart rate around 60% and you're good. She acts like people stand there watching tv and forget to exercise lol.
Watching TV is the only reason why I get on an elliptical or even an exercise bike. I can jump on the thing for 30 minutes while I watch a show and jump off to use other equipment for 10-15 minutes.
I've just started using an elliptical and I've been getting quite severe one sided hip / lower back pain, it's a strange feeling I've never really gotten before in my life and I'm pretty young. Anyone experienced this and did they find out what was causing it re: elliptical use?
Did interval training on an elliptical in Iraq 90-100+ degrees, because that was the only machine they had other than blocks. Cardio threshold was pushed so far, that it was really hard to wear me out. I abused that thing though, the whole machine was shaking around I was moving it so fast at the top of interval 5.
That is incorrect on so many levels…. Work done doesn’t really change - physics sill holds true… so net calories burnt would be exactly the same… you probably would have different muscles activated though.
If you want to mix it up and do a variety of exercise, then why not incorporate the elliptical, by your own admission you are limiting yourself. You make some valid points, but the elliptical has some advantages, unlike the other exercises mentioned the elliptical is low impact, and I haven't found another exercise where I can exert myself to the level I can on the elliptical. I'm not educated in this field, but I understand this body and I have a good understanding of biology, but more important than that, I'm getting the results from the elliptical. How else can I burn 400 calories in 10 minutes, and that's not big talk for purpose of debate. Don't get me wrong, I only want to be constructive, I'm not criticising, I think you're intelligent woman but on this point I think your wrong.
How can it possibly be too easy when I can't even last two minutes on one of these stupid things? I can walk for half an hour just fine, but getting these things to move on even their lowest resistance setting has always been way too hard for me.
What is so different about watching tv vs listening to books in tape or music? Either way your brain is distracted. Back in the 90s I lost 30 pounds doing the stair climber and treadmill while my mind was in another place, listening to books on tape. If breathing is really what burns fat, I would think any steady cardio would force your body to do that, even if your brain is distracted. I suppose you could lose a lot of weight if you DIE OF BOREDOM doing the machines with no distraction.
I hate stationary exercise machines, i get bored with them quickly nothing compares to tearing apart the bike trail with my Walgoose nothing compares..
She really should not be discouraging Americans who are willful and reluctant to move around. This video is bullshit. Elliptical is great for anybody from ages 18 to 88. If reading a book or watching movies inspires more movement, then do it!
I mean, it IS bullshit, but only to those people who want a REALLY INTENSE workout 😂. I bike for an hour and a half to burn 1.2K calaories, and would hate trying to do that on the elliptical, as its just not feasible to do. With cycling, I can take it easy somewhat and still cycle my ass off while being under 150 BPM. so it deoends on the goal tbh
This lady is a joke. Have she not heard of low-intensity steady-state cardio? smfh. it doesn't matter if you forget your doing it while watching tv (that's the whole point) Being in a caloric deficit is the goal. If someone is watching tv and doing 20-40 minutes of elliptical cardio then thats fine.
Nothing is stopping you from incorporating other types of exercise on top of using the elliptical/crosstrainer. So why would that even be an issue? Most people who work out will apply different types of equipments and/or exercises, so you're hardly limited to only using the elliptical machine, obviously!
Blah blah blah! Do whatever you need to get through your workout, burn some calories, have a little fun, & don’t be discouraged by this negative Nancy!
This girl speaks nonsense. Ellipticals are great tools for beginners, overweight, as well a professional world-class runners for cooldown/warmup or recovery days. You might be surprised how high a beginners person's heart rate can get when they do cardio. A simple jog can make someone's HR go up to 160 for example. Broadcasting your HR from your watch to the console or your phone and keeping it within certain range 110-130 for me helps me learn to relax and this isn't something I can do on a Treadmill. You also don't need the armswings. You can mimic your running arm swing motion on the Elliptical without the arm attachments. Heather seems like a young person who never been out of shape. Elliptical are great tools for warm up/cool downs and also for long steady state cardio recovery for anyone of all stages of fitness.
Whats the point of this vidoe. Look lady go on your boring bike to workout il stick with the ellipticall it helped me alott i turned skinny after using this i sett hard for like 5 min some time i set it soft like hiit workout veryy verryy good machine
some say you would develop disc problems as the pedal will push back up and compress your spine, does anyone here experience that after years of using it?
