For headphone watchers, one section of the video is left ear only for audio. This was my last video with this horrible wireless microphone setup. I smashed it with a hammer afterwards.
4:44 That little kick is not the transmission, that's your motor mounts. All of the GMT900 platform SUV's with the 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 seem to get this issue after 70-100,000 miles or so depending on how hard its life has been. Open the hood, put her in Drive, step on the brake and give it some gas. You'll see that engine block try to hop out of there.
I had a '10 Tahoe Z71 for a few years and ended up replacing the driver side motor mount, parents had an '08 Escalade had to do the same thing. Great trucks if you abuse them, even better if you take care of them.
For whatever reason this seems to be somewhat common for all GM RWD/4WD platforms. Even later model S10s with the 4 cylinder would smoke engine mounts. Hilariously, the S10 mounts are enormous (about the size of a regular sized jar of mayo or peanut butter) and that little anemic motor eats them up anyhow.
One thing to note the 08-09 Denali did NOT have AFM aka cylinder deactivation. The 07 had the hardware but it was not activated, however the 08-09 didn’t have the hardware at all. It wasn’t until 2010 when they started using the AFM (cylinder deactivation) so find one before 2010 and you’re good. I have an 08 Denali with 227k miles on it and it’s running strong with no signs of giving up.
Really glad you covered this man, I've been looking at maybe purchasing a Denali from before 2010 and was a little skeptical when he mentioned the whole cylinder deactivation being an issue.
I have a 2009 Yukon slt 5.3. It has 212,000 miles on it. Had since new and have never done anything to it but change the oil. If you want a reliable vehicle this is it
So the only service you've done to your vehicle you've owned since brand new were oil changes? Meaning you never changed any other fluids (transmission, power steering, brake fluid, differential, or transfer case)? I don't mean to jinx you but that sounds like you should be prepared for a potential huge failure in the future that'll make you file for bankruptcy lol. But seriously, it's a huge risk to not do any other maintenance other than oil changes. Sure it's the main and most important but a car is more than just its engine!
I have an 07 Suburban with over 242,000 on it and I've only changed the oil and plugs. It has the original transmission fluid still in it. This thing's a beast.
Meq Six Do not flush your transmission now. If you do its almost guaranteed it will break. Your should flush at max at 60k. After anout 120k just wait til it breaks then replace or rebuild
Man, this was the music I was playing when I started my career! This is the most comfortable video you've posted, in my opinion. You're getting really good at this! Thanks
MrCarGuy20 Lol, for shits and giggles I had my 05' Tahoe Z71 appraised then and the dealership didn't even wanna touch it. They valued it at around 11k. I laughed so hard on my way out the dealership that I caught everyone's attention. I sold it privately after the recovery for over 20k. And I originally payed 23k for it with 5k in mileage.
Gage Spanny yeah but a Toyota Tundra can last over 1 million miles there fore of since the Seqouia has the exact same engine it can at least get a good 750k miles on it. Therefore meaning that the Seqouia is the better family hauler both durable and reliable.
Isaac Arias yeah, but there are also silverado's with over a million miles so therefore the Tahoe and Yukon can also hit 1 million miles because they share the same engine. Any vehicle can hit a million miles it depends on where you live and how well you maintain it.
Why is it that I can enjoy listening to Hoovie talk about an old American SUV while I get quickly bored of listening to Doug talk about the latest supercar he's testing. You'd think a supercar would be more exciting...Hoovie you got style and you capture interest, I hope you never stop what your doing and continue this Idiots Guide series. Its great!
The thing I love about the triplets is that you can find one of these anywhere you go, from being used as Uber blacks in NYC to being driven around the Suburban and rural areas of the USA.
I have a theory that Doug refuses to acknowledge Hoovie because he knows he would get outshined. I wish you had access to the press cars he did, would love a Hoovie review of a new Mclaren or something
My boss had the cylinder deactivation issue on his 2007 suburban at only 66,000 miles. It relieved his wallet of over $3,000. Also, you forgot to mention almost every single one of these GM full size SUVs of this era have cracked dashboards and peeling door handles.
wolverine350r if you have a sharp handles take your truck to the dealership because there's a recall for this since people were seriously injuring themselves, they will replace your handles for free.
I have read that, but will they even if I am not the first owner? Mine have issues inside and out, the driver is really sharp on the inside and my mother sliced herself pretty good on the outside passenger handle.
wolverine350r if it is in fact a recall, which I think it is, it doesn't matter if you're the 15th owner or how old the truck is, it's a safety issue that they are required to fix
Got a 2005 Escalade esv platinum best vehicle our family has ever owned. Can pile 7-8 people in a still have lots of cargo space in the back, pull the boat, drives great on the highway, no issues mechanically or cosmetically (knock on wood). Honestly you can’t go wrong
We had a 2011 Escalade ESV and we loved it and recently sold it and bought a 2017 Escalade not an ESV. We had our Escalade since I was in 3rd grade and it feels like I had it my whole life. When we sold our 11 Escalade ESV I was sitting at the dealership crying because I didn't want to get rid of it. I honestly like the old body style better than the 2015 through current.
If you can find a NEW Denali for 65k your're getting a smoking deal on one. I do window tinting for a local GMC dealer here in OKC and they move more Denali Yukons than anyone around. The usual msrp on them is anywhere from 79-82k depending on options. Also from someone who is in and out of over 70 new GM truck platforms a month (driving to and from the dealer) the initial transmission slop you're talking about is experienced from day one. They feel like they are waiting to engage and then kick really hard.
jhugo1986 you can change it without having to drop any components or power steering pump if you get a swivel, and jack engine up, it will slide through the top. Remove the intermediate steering shaft. My first one took me 4 hours, I can do them now in under an hour.
"...with little difference between the 2007 and 2017 models." I don't know if that means the old infotainment system was a decade ahead of its time, or if the new one is a decade behind.
One issue you failed to mention is the rampant problem with the dash board cracking on the driver's side and passenger side. Both sides crack at both ends of the air vent on a 45 degree angle. My 2011 Avalanche LTZ has been garage kept and babied since the day I bought it and I still managed to get these cracks. I looked online and there are TONS of people out there with the same issue. There are even RU-vid videos out there showing them.
Tony R Honestly I think almost all of them have it. Some trucks get the cracks a lot worse than others. I pointed them out to my friend who has an Avalanche and maybe I shouldn't have because he had no clue before I said anything and now he's really upset about it.
I got a covercraft mat off amazon for $50. It fits perfectly though I did have to cut a hole for the center dash speaker. Perhaps they have a cover with said hole already cut. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007WIET46/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Honorable mentions: the heater hose that sends coolant to the engine! (this happen on my 07 Tahoe and 08 escalade) The cracking dashboards! The leaking engine oil!! Motor on the power running boards! over all good trucks.
I have an 09 with 169k. Happy to hear the jerk on take-off could be an engine mount instead of a tranny issue. Great vehicle with the usual complaints- Worn buttons on the AC, flaking paint on the inside of door handles, engine mount, annoying rattling locks(which I fixed with soft velcro), had to replace oil pressure sensor, high pitch whining through the speakers. Love the truck though
Have a '07 Tahoe w/ the Vortech PPV. Transmission burned out at 150k Miles. Put the new transmission in, shifts like butter. Other than that, no problems. These Chevy Engine's last easily over 200k miles as long as you give it the love it needs haha
You never buy a used police car esp one that was used on the streets i.e normal heavy police usage .. the one you get is the detective one..or used as city fleet
Dashskin sells some dashboard overlays that'll take care of that cracking issue. I installed one in mine a couple of years ago and it still looks showroom new....and the product price isn't bad either!!
Also look for cracking dashboards in warmer climates. '07 Denalis and Escalades had major electrical issues with the AWD system/stabilitrak wiring connectors, my dad's 07 Escalade would completely quit on the highway and needed a tow-in probably 4 or 5 times in 3 years, his coworker had an Avalanche with the same issues.
My mom had an ‘07 suburban that she bought with about 70,000 miles on it. Drove it to about 110,000 miles and started to have endless issues with it. There was a break problem that would cost about $5,000+ to fix. I have heard great things about this generation of these cars though so I assume we just had a lemon. Great video hoovie👍
My college graduation present in 2010 was an ‘09 Denali. I kept it until 2016. As soon as it hit 100k mi on Christmas Eve 2014 it fell apart- within 3 months, fuel sending unit went out, oil pan started leaking, airbag sensor went out, both front wheel bearings, cruise control went out and none of the recommended fixes worked. Within the next year, master fuse burned out and made every light on the dash come on at 2 in the morning, alternator went out, wire to the starter burned up and it had periodically had electrical issues for the 6 months before I sold it, both front exterior door handles broke, and on the inside before it hit 100k the leather on the center console cracked one winter and the “chrome” on the interior handles peeled and was very sharp. I kept it until 130k because the infotainment system started getting dead pixels and for some reason flipped upside down and kept defaulting to 12 AM. It was just too expensive for someone fresh out of grad school and getting started. I loved it though and I never damaged it, so the White Diamond paint did really well. I took it all over the US and it was very comfortable to ride in. I miss it sometimes, but definitely not the year and a half full of repair bills.
Priuses are for douchebags. Some people just like full size SUVs due to their capacities they offer. Priuses are supposedly meant for saving the environment, but the battery making process and material used to make their batteries are actually worse for the environment than a Land Rover Discovery. So just stick with a full size SUV and don’t get a Prius.
Im more of a Ford guy but i have always loved GM's Vortec engines. My family's ranch truck is a 2001 Gmc sierra. She has pulled horse trailers graded the arena hauled brick, tree trimming and pulled out cacti from the ground. I think it has around 190k or 210k miles. Of course being a 16 year old workhorse she's needed stuff replaced but its a great truck. Been trying to buy it from my parents for years! Haha
I leased one for a short while. It was a dream to drive to be honest. It was like driving my livingroom. In Nyc traffic it was a blast. Quite, great soft seats, and traffic made it a great place to be in.
DriveMango On paper it’s great but I couldn’t find the use case for it when you can get a Silverado pickup with a better towing power then an avalanche
Maybe but the avalanche tends to be cheaper than a silverado. I got mine for 14 grand and the dealer wanted a similar silverado for 3 grand more, 17k. The Avalanche also is nice because it rides smoother , has a better turning radius, and the bed is connected to the cabin so you can fold down the rear seats and have a full size 8 foot bed. Not to mention that it's the most unique looking truck in the business معتز التميم
This was my first car an 07 Denali with the 6.2L V8 Engine, Great car a lot of good memories. Although after 130K miles the interior door handle fake chrome trim started to peel off, GM quality to be expected. The Denali Served me well driving a Macan now!
I heard they debated whether to call it the McKinley. I love my 2013 McKinley. I built out the 6l80 with the Sonnex upgrade. Along with a billet torque converter, it's shifts wonderfully. After the lifters are replaced, it will be bullet proof. The 6.2 in the McKinley responds well to performance modifications, and a good tune. It makes a really good family sled. Smooth and bountiful power, with a satisfying rumble. What's not to like? Eats ah preetee khar Si?
+Joseph Summers No, he lives where you don't want to live. I'd much rather live in a nice, quite neighborhood, somewhere in the middle of the country, where homes are affordable, crime is lower, the air is cleaner and the spending power is higher rather than pay $1,800,000 to buy a rundown shack in the middle of Los Angeles that has a view of a homeless bum taking a dump on the hood of your car.
Or compromise. I live next to a large city (not in one), in a mid-size city, with the lowest crime in Canada of any mid-size city (190,000 people and we have, on average, one murder a year). It's probably safer than the country tbh. And if I want to go to a fun, large event, I can be there in 40 minutes. No mosquitoes, no lime disease, no long drives into town for things.
woodenshoesgamer The US is a huge country. If you're near a big city housing could be 10-20-40 times that much but in more rural areas you can get cheap prices like 65k, just don't expect much, he did say a small house after all.
billy mccabe yeah i understand that it is more expensive if youre near a big city, but even in the "rural" area's in my country there is nothing that comes even close to that price.
billy mccabe Yeah, $65k in Wichita, KS buys you a decent starter house that might be like 1,500 sq. Ft. If you want a decent sized, nice house you're looking at $150k or more.
And you could drive cross the the Netherlands in a few hours. You'd have to travel a few hours outside of one two of the largest US cities just to find a homes for €200,000 (~$235,000). If you wanted to cross the US, it would take you another 45 hours of nonstop driving or most of week realistically. There are some parts of the US that are so remote and so desolate, it would take a day just to find large populations.
Nice video! I have a 2008 suburban that I purchased new. I was wondering what you meant by infrequent oil changes. I change oil every 5000 miles or less. This car does not get driven hard at all. It's typical drive to work and back Is 5 minutes long. Just curious because it has the 5.3 with active fuel management and I have heard of people having problems with these engines. I currently have 85000 miles on mine.
Streetstockcamaro I see very few with minivans these days. I'd say a minivan might be a bit more convenient with sliding doors and flat floors and whatnot and probably better fuel mileage but around here anyway almost everyone has an SUV if they have kids to haul around.
No they don’t. If they do it’s because crossovers and vans are far cheaper. Go ask anyone that has a van, they’d die to have one of these but they can’t afford them and don’t want one that’s 10 years old.
Not sure if someone else here has noted this but these SUV's are notorious for cracked dashboards, peeling interior door handles and exterior door handles that literally break off in your hand. The engines and transmissions are very solid in my experience but the older GMT800s have aged better all around and still command a decent price on the market.
Ezale Even the Land Cruiser isnt as nice looking inside and out as a Yukon or Esclade. Sure, a Toyota will last a little longer but these GM suvs are more appealing
THEBADDEST Due to the 7 series hitting rock bottom in price. There are 3 7 series in my small town and they are all owned by black guys which have big wheels on them.
My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer does/has that "sloppy" transmission kick thing from time to time. Other times when I ease into acceleration it doesn't happen. It still runs great and starts up quick. I baby it since it has 196,880 miles on her. How could I get that checked out? Or what should I tell my mechanic if I want them to check it out? Glad you got your Mercedes truck back, dude! God bless!
4:11 - my brother did that. It sprayed boiling hot steam into his face. He got 3rd degree burns and the doctor said he would be permanently scarred. It healed 100%
