Jon Brown the thing I don't get is why was skyrim showed if it wasn't coming that just seems like a stupid decision but I hope skyrim will be on the switch and if I doesn't hey I guy can dream.
bethesda can say what the F they want, if there is support from other publishers and it sells a lot of hardware, they WILL want to take that cake... all those childish boast of "we don't if not" are bullshit...
Not true. That's what happened with the Wii U, 3rd party devs stopped working on it since it was underpowered and it took too many work hours to adapt their games to a subpar system removing content, textures and so on. Besides the Wii U at first did had a lot of publishers in the beggining, similar to the switch, so Bethesda were being pragmatic, they were not going to repeat the same mistake unless hardware met a certain minimum.
Alridx 3rd party did supported WiiU because it didn't sold... if WiiU sold as well as the Wii, they would make games on the system, as they want MONEY... as it didn't sell well, they stopped caring. and the console was doomed... actually, most publisher does not even WANT high hardware... so that they can keep their engine for a long time (bethesda is already failing hard with their skyrim engine used for Fallout 4... lol)
Dirkschneider this is the problem I have with my phone whenever I take it to the toilet to do anything. I suddenly realize I have nowhere to really put it other than the fucking ground, which is not the most optimal thing to do.
Paul Shriner That's true with the wii u but the wii u was just a..dare I say, add-on? to the wii But the switch looks totally different Now if it comes out and *is* crap, I'll take back my words but as of now, it looks like it has great potential
I thought the point of the basketball segment wasn't to show people stopping to play a basketball game. But that there's only one court, so while you switch out and let others play hoops (seen in the background) you can still play basketball in video game format. Like if you can only play one actual game of tennis, and you have to switch out to let other people play tennis, you can still play tennis.
It just a really made up scenario. Hell I don't even take my phone to the courts. Cuz I won't leave it alone on the bench or in a bag. And I wouldn't take any expensive device to my park either. And having to go back and fourth from my car to grab the switch, and bring it back to the court to wait my turn is just silly. But I agree it was more to show you can local co-op play with it.
This is the final system developed under Satoru Iwata. Too bad he couldn't have been the one to show it (RIP Iwata), but it shows the ingenuity he had to think about how the worldwide market is. Westerners love our large televisions, and consoles. Japan still loves handhelds. You put them together, and aim this at the adult crowd? We're talking about sales higher than Wii! Possibly even higher than the DS!! Welcome back to the forefront Nintendo, it's yours for the taking, get those 3rd parties on board, and there's no stopping Nintendo for the next 5 to 10 years (however long Switch lasts)!!
you also have to give credit to the new president (his name escapes me). Imagine if Iwata and him was together to both create a innovative console and have A1 marketing behind it. the Wii U would have sold like water in the desert.
Jude Law Couldn't agree more. I guess Nintendo couldn't have made a better comeback. I'm curious as to how well it'll stack up against Xbox Scorpio and the PS4 Pro.
Coming March 2018..... The playstation change!!! Its a detachable controller tablet but they have huge unnecessary balls at the top!! (Comes bundled with Crash, Exhale of the wilderness) Buy now and you can get it in 4k-inda resolution!! And now you have to pay for online play and local play to play on the Playstation Change! (Also Packaged with just dance 78)
The creator of dark souls is a Zelda fan. Imagine Nintendo versions of the dark souls trilogy where you could find Zelda content/Easter eggs like a green tunic or master sword?
Great video Rich. I have to admit, the last 2 consoles to come out that blew my mind were the PS2 and the Wii. Watched the Switch reveal video and was totally blown away. I've been strictly a PC gamer for the past 10 years but am now really excited for the Switch release.
I'm loving that, seemingly every minute, one of my favourite gaming commentators has been uploading their reactions to the Switch. It's really cool hearing every person's thoughts :)
What is up with these console codenames and official names? Official sounds worse in comparison. PS4 NEO > PS4 Pro Nintendo NX > Nintendo Switch Xbox One Scorpio > ???
Apparently the Switch uses an nvidia pascal tegra x1 chip which should be damn near equivalent to the xb1 and ps4 in terms of power. If they make the Switch easy to make games for and not require extra work (like with the wii u requiring the 2nd screen crap), developers won't feel afraid to make games for it, they won't think it's a big risk. If they make it for the XB1 and PS4, they might as well make it for the Switch if it's similar in architecture and power. I am super excited for this, I haven't felt excited about anything gaming related since.. well ever
Niuqorram I believe you mean Tegra X2. The X2 tech is using Pascal, not the X1. But this is a highly customized chip according to Nvidia, so it's probably not either X1 or X2 purely. But yes, it can probably get real world parity with the Xbone. No guarantees, but definitely possible
OmegaWeaponX2 In reality, no, people can't just say it however they like. If people are saying "wtf is he talking about?" then that's a problem. One that's solved by saying it correctly.
Moromillas Radec If people can't tell that he's saying "Mario", then there isn''t something wrong with him, there's something wrong with them. Sometimes, words can have different pronounciations, but even if they don't, all you need to do is explain what you're talking about once (if people get confused), then you can go right back to saying it how you want to say it.
OmegaWeaponX2 "It's everyone else's fault!" No... The person swapping out letters willy nilly is at fault. Hey, I'm just going to replace the R with a Z. Mezio! Mezio! Oh, you don't understand me? That's your fault then! No it isn't.
This is the only console I consider buying. And by "consider" I don't mean I'm going to, it's just other consoles are not an option at all. I already have a PC, and I would rather buy another PC or a laptop than a console. But this one can be used in ways that a PC or other consoles can't, and it has great games that PC doesn't have. If it can work with my monitor, if it will have a bunch of timesink games, if the pricing is alright and if the console doesn't have any deal breakers (like horrible DRM or mass surveillance support), then I'll probably buy one. Because in that case I'll know that it will incorporate itself into my life, I will use it and I will enjoy using it.
Vaidas Šukauskas Tablet and console games have completely different gameplay because of completely different input methods. And it is also a matter of exclusives. If all console games were available on my PC, I wouldn't even think about getting a console, even if it involved playing games with peripherals that they weren't designed for. It'll be used as a handheld for sure. I don't think "cannibalize" is a right word here. The last 3ds was released almost 2 years ago.
Kakto Tak basically Nintendo is a PCs best friend. In fact when you put the controllers together for TV play it kind of looks like a dog, man's best friend.
It actually makes a lot of sense. The PC market is on the rise and consoles are trying to compete with PC, which imo isn't much of a fight, so they focus on the their strength which is their mobile market. They put their dying market along side their strongest one to create a totally different experience from any of the competitors, since the switch is the only one that can play AAA games on the go along with all of their exclusives. This means that the switch has a unique gaming experience in the largest growing market for gaming, and can directly coexist with PC since it doesn't compete with it. Also if their hand held games gets transferred to the switch, the library of exclusive games along with some huge pi's like Pokemon could drive this thing way up the sales chart. If the switch functions as well as it did in this trailer it could become a huge hit if the logic all falls into place.
Great breakdown! The only thing I'd say is that you may have missed a key implication from the basketball scene... it was definitely silly, but what they showed was the group was playing with 4 people on 2 systems. I'm not sure how likely it is that outdoor park has wifi, but if not then those 2 systems were linked like DS systems. That takes LAN parties to a whole new level!
Jacob Melone it's a tablet that connects to a dock that connects to the tv and you can remove the tablet and put controllers on it. When you play it on TV you don't use the tablet, just a normal controller.
Filip Martinez It looks like 3D World because the main character is Mario???? This new game looks literally nothing like 3D World. Like not one bit, other than the fact that it stars Mario.
That would be cool if the dock had an option to save and sync a backup of each game cartridge's save data while in the dock, or via wifi on the go (assuming that the dock has a standby/ semi-sleep mode with a type of low energy sync mode enabled). This would mean that if manage to lose your tablet or any games, your save data would still be contained within the dock portion.
I better see GTA 5, Watch Dogs (I don't really like Watch Dogs but I think it'll be a good fit for this console), Sports games (I known NBA is on this, I mean football, fifa, hockey, etc) , Racing Games, and any other good M rated games!
Its a completely new console not tied to any of the previous consoles. You can play it on the tv, but also has the capabilities of playing off tv. You're not forced to play off tv, I don't see what all the confusion is about.
DaPacMan2012 There are still a lot of questions left though, such as battery life, price point, launch games, are the little controllers comfortable, and more.
The trailer only shows what the console/handheld is capable of. It seems weird to show the full specs in this teaser trailer. Leave the in-depth bits to the analyzers.
I'm really hoping that you can buy additional docks so you can plug into multiple tvs around the house or even buy a dock to keep at a friend's/grandparent's/divorced parent's house so can really play anywhere the way you want to.
Nintendo handled the reveal VERY well. I'm actually very excited for the Switch, even though the Wii U and 3DS (and to a lesser extent, the Wii) destroyed most of my love for Nintendo. I'm still going to wait until 2020-2021 to get one though. Last gen taught me that anything Nintendo shows prerelease might be too good to be true and that the actual systems they release will never live up to what they initially showed. So I'm going to wait. Even if it turns out to be amazing and sells ultra well, I'll just wait for the revisions and the price drops. For the controllers I'm assuming Nintendo is using ultra powerful magnets and perhaps some electrical contacts, hopefully durability is still high.
The 3DS is way better than the original DS. But home consoles Nintendo sucks, and I think trying to combine handheld and home console is going to be bad. Good marketing, but can't forget that they promised 3rd party for the Wii U.
I am curious about the operating system, more hardware stuff, and storage Will it have mp3 function? Because it would make a cool music player device. Will it have Bluetooth? Also, what about backwards capability via Nintendo Store. Will the people who purchased a WiiU have games that came out for it available for Switch? Will it have streaming sources like Pandora? iHeart radio? I know it will have Netflix and Hulu. Will there be an SD card slot for extra storage? Also, will it be easy to hack like the previous 3 consoles (contrary to belief, the GameCube can be hacked like the Wii and WiiU). Which also brings to question about piracy. There might be flashcards developed for it by hackers and modders. I am looming forward to this consoles and all the information about it in the next few months.
I don't know about backwards compatibility. It's an entirely different architecture, so they'd have to cram a Wii U into the Switch. I don't see that happening.
***** It doesn't seem like there is much extra room. The Switch is about 1" thick, and the portable part is about 1/2". The Wii U was around 2-3" thick, so there was a little more room.
I really like the format that you used for this video. Still pictures give one time to really observe the scene. I was surprised that this worked so well and effectively. Thank you, sir! The Switch only worries me in one aspect: no D-Pad. What of Virtual Console games? Do I have to buy an other controller or just swap out the left handle for a D-Pad version. I hope it is the latter.
Preference for me is wires. My older brother bought wireless headphones and then returned it after a few days because it stopped working. The reason it stopped working is because it, for some reason, was glitching to where it won't connect to the computer.
Can someone remind me why Rich stopped using the livecam in his videos and went back to gameplay for his recent uploads? Did I miss the memo or something?
Because of comments like this asking where the old video structure was. Some were pretty harsh like "I don't want to see your fat face go back to gameplay" I've even read "Stop trying hard to be a meme like filthy frank" so I'm guessing that's why the internet is pretty harsh to change.
idk about that kid thing honestly, but i remember there being a week where he was just on twitter taking surveys about it and asking people and showing results for his videos with and without gameplay.
Supertron If you pay close attention, you can see both ports are indented at the front like an HDMI port. USB ports are much closer to perfect rectangles. EDIT: Mis-observation on my part. Forgot that USB ports have rounded edges on the bottom but sharp edges on the top. Now taking a closer look they're probably both USB.
I'm not impressed by the reveal, it's still underwhelming because the rumors and leaks spoiled the concept of the Switch, it's not a bad system, but the launch games better be good, otherwise lots of third party developers will jump ship.
Can you imagine if this launched alongside the PS4/XB1? It would have been the Wii(sales) all over again because the Switch would be the cheapest (300), followed by PS4 (400), and then XB1 (500).
One difference I'd have done with filming this reveal? The part where the guys are playing Mario Kart in the back seat of the car? I'd have had kids playing there rather than adults. At least have a bit of advertisement there for parents. I like the adult focus in the reveal but that was definitely a scene that would appeal to parents more than anybody else.
I love it! But I realized: This is the Wii U. Just how we Hoped it would be! We wanted the Wii U to be half portable half home console and be very powerful. Basically, Nintendo is remaking the Wii U, just really good this time
The choice of games for the basketball scene made perfect sense. It stops people raising a question about the latest sports titles, FIFA etc. It's an advert that ticks a lot of boxes.
this thing is pretty fucking cool, i just hope the slidey bits are extremely durable and the small controllers have some kind of built in BEEP/finder in case ya lose them.
I can bet they are durable, if they have a finder option is hoping for a little much, they'll probably make the pieces cheap to replace, but they are betting on you to never separate the controller bits from the tablet by too much a distance because they are the same piece and shouldn't be separated unnecessarily in the first place.
Battery life will need to be pretty amazing to make this even worth buying for the portability prospect. If the tablet dies before your flight lands the main point will become mute.
The most important thing is that it charges from USB power. Everyone, *everyone* I know who uses devices on the move has a powertank these days. As long as the Switch mobile module can accept USB input, the battery life isn't so important to me.
I'm glad they finally realized a few things: #1 Adults are gamers too and are more so than kids (and more numerous than kids) #2 Kids don't think kids are cool, they think adults and adult things are cool, kids are more receptive to adverts that don't make them look like what they are but what they want to be. #3 Nintendo is finally realizing that gimmicky stuff is stupid THIS has actual usefulness.
Holding the controls separately in your hands actually can be pretty comfortable. I remember doing that with some Wii games that didn't really use motion controls. It was reasonably comfortable.
So, here are my concerns: Digital games? Because I know it's cartridge based. Cool. But, what if you dont want to bring 40 cartidges, or forget to bring more than one on a trip and want to play something else? Can you download games onto the Switch? How many? What's the storage capacity? Will they be downloaded to the home portion, or the tablet portion? (Does the portable part have its own Storage and is it a significant amount?) Is there an online store to get digital games? Is the UI intuitive and clean? Or is it clunky, complicated, and difficult to navigate?
Oh, one more: Is the tablet locked to a single dock, or can you bring it to a friend's house and put your Switch into their dock? This also pertains to getting a replacement tablet or dock. Can you just buy the broken part as a replacement, or do you have to re-purchase the entire system at full price because tablets and docks aren't interchangeable?
You raise some good questions and these questions are an eye opener. If Nintendo are smart about this then maybe they will have an SD card slot for downloading games online. Every other console has a store where you can digitally download games so Nintendo might catch up with this and add something like that. But we don't know until we get offical specs and all that. Let's just hope that Nintendo have really done their research on what people really want.
Again, no idea why its even a question. Of course they're going to do it. It'd be unlike them to just throw digital gaming out the window considering how easy and successful it is.
Dude, they're not playing NBA2k17 *instead* of actually playing basketball - it's their time off the court while somebody else is playing. Like in street tournament or something. Seriously, that's pretty easy to understand in this trailer.
I think my favorite thing about this is that there is MULTIPLAYER. I hate that all the other consoles basically destroyed any idea of splitscreen gaming.
I'm guessing that the recess on the back near the bottom is the intake for the fan. If you notice the car seat attachment has a matching hole, presumably to allow for proper air flow.
One thing, it appeared that there was a noticeable drop in framerate when he pulled it off the base for Zelda. I don't think it's that big a deal but I know it matters for some.
i just watched this awesome analisis 6 years later 😅. i love my switch and I'm looking forward to watch ur video analisis on the switch 2 whenever it comes out
It sounds like you're pretty up on this so far, Rich. Obviously, it depends on the specifics of the hardware (rumors are a modified Tegra X1 currently) will make or break it a lot, but the concept is super solid. And they also revealed the most important piece of info for launch: A 3D Mario game on launch. You need that shit. Showing Skyrim as a third party example title is a strong choice. Not just because that's still a popular game, but Bethesda has never had a major title on a Nintendo system before. So if they're on board, there's definitely something they were impressed with.
Calvin Smith That's the hope. In fact, even if it is a modified X1, they could potentially be able to wring more out of it for the sake of gaming, as it doesn't have to worry about other processes that normal tablets would have running.
***** I'm thinking it's minimum an X1. There are rumors that it's a modified X2, but I think that's a bit too hopeful. And would make it very expensive.
im so excited about the cartridges it is so much easier to store them and i dont care about the graphics as long is it isnt pixelated and like a 180p youtube video from 2005 it will be fine. also i will say it one more time i have said it every comment section they stopped playing basketball cause to let other people use the court
"While footage from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was shown, Bethesda, the game's developer, later stated they had not yet planned on bringing the game to the Switch, but had provided Nintendo the footage to support the reveal as a committed developer for the system." Well, thats pretty tricky of you, Nintendo.
It would awesome if cartridges could be updated with patches and then you wouldn't need a ton of space. They could also be future proof if those patches were ever taken offline.
One thing I'd like to point out is how prominent Nintendo's name is on the console. Back in the day their consoles were the Nintendo 64, the Nintendo Gamecube, etc, but starting with the Wii, the name was just Wii, with not much mention of the company's name in the marketing or packaging. And now we have the Nintendo Switch with Nintendo written in big letters on both the console and the controller. Kind of brings me back to the good old days of Nintendo consoles.
