I love that idea! Tell everybody I'm not available to sort their crap out! It'd be great to have a glam squad to just primp and preen me like these celebrities have daily. I'm lucky to find a hairbrush to drag through my tangled mane biweekly and brush my teeth in the brief intervals my daughters aren't in the bathrooms admiring themselves and coating each lash and eyebrow individually (apparently)....to say nothing of the fake tanning, the depilation , hair masks, goot and face masks, indicate makeup application, long bubble baths and even longer showers....

*Soil mix:* Most tropical rainforest plants will benefit from a small portion of Activated Charcoal mixed in. It acts against harmful bacteria and moderates changes in the soil chemistry. Any sort of forest goes thru burn events at times, so this also mimics a feature of the rainforest environment: there is always some charcoal in that soil.

One of the first plants I ever bought was a Philodendron Xanadu and that guy has never let me down! Grows like crazy even in the winter and hasn't given me a single issue. Definitely expanding my philodendron collection right now, love these plants 💖

I want to take the time today to thank you for your videos, Kaylee! You were the one that got me into plants. Before, I thought that I could not have plants, because a) I always kill them (by overwatering, I even killed a Zamioculca in the past!), and b) my house is too dark. By buying this moisture probe that you always recommend, I felt more confident that I could do it. I also realized that I do have quite some spots in my house which are not too dark. Now, I have something around 50 plants, and they are all happy and thriving. And this makes me happy. Thanks a million!

Girl I have only watched the first 6 minutes and 7 seconds of this video and I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate this videoooo!!!! I water mine the same as Alocasias and they are hating it. Regarding fertilizing, if you repotted, wait 4-6 months before adding any. Most soils have lots of nutrition and some even have fertilizer in them so extra can burn the roots. I put a note in my planner when I repot so I know when I can fertilize 😊

After awhile, I recommend double checking your moisture meters or getting a good quality one. Mine was giving me wacky readings (i.e. saying it was dry when it was wet). Also clean the rods with alcohol between use so you get accurate readings and don't transfer anything funky to other plants.

Hey Paula!!! Love this:)) I have seen some comments saying that they don't like other videos about using the finger method, but I don't use a moisture probe and wait for my Phils to just about dry out (when the pot feels very light) I do so much by feeling do to the fact I'm partially blind and ALL my philodendrons look beautiful, but if I was to purchase one I will use your method...I have a hard time trusting gadgets :)) Emily

@@illumlife588 Hi Emily! Nice to see you here! Yes, I notice first that my moisture probe was taking a long time to register the moisture level. I would have to put it in and then come back. Eventually, it was totally wrong. Like Kaylee Ellen mentioned in the video, I noticed that giving a plant a soaking til water came out the bottom did not always suit the plants. My Ficus Audrey will drop leaves if I do that. I also like how she mentioned roots don't always go through the bottom hole if a plant is root bound. I would say caring for plants in our unique environments is experiential and instinctual. You learn by overwatering and getting fungus gnats like I did or just by knowing what your plants need based on the type of light they get, pot they are in and if all else fails testing the soil by hand will do the trick!

@@younghomestudio1396 I was just looking for a good one on Amazon to use in the winter. They seem to have the same mechanisms. Honestly, I think they probably all go a bit wonky after a few months. Maybe we have to just plan on haveing to buy a new one after awhile.

I LOVE that you gave me a number for my water meter to get to before watering. It is so much easier for me to stick the probe in and see that it is at a 3 than sticking my finger in and trying to decide if I feel moisture.

Thank you SO much for such an in-depth, timely and incredibly useful video!! I had purchased a moisture meter after watching one of your videos and, as soon as I watched this, went to Amazon and ordered a couple of hygrometers! Someone has already asked (and you kindly answered) my question in the comments about my Gloriosum. The two leaves it has seem to be getting a bit yellow and the new leaf is taking forever and a day to unfurl. Kaylee I'm only a minute almost 5 on your video and what excellent advice about watering. To me it's sort of intuitive when a plant needs watered and after you have it for a little while you understand its needs and if you do a little research understand it even better. But some people are new to plants and they really don't have a clue how to water and they're scared the plants going to die so they tend to over water. So you have explained this in such a great way I'm a retired teacher and I taught for 32 years and substituted for 13 and it always amazed me new teachers and how they don't understand how to really teach if someone doesn't understand something like one of the students in math maybe he's not understanding triple digit multiplication or division or something. And they were so bright they got straight A's never struggled to learn anything top of their class but have no clue on how to teach. I had to explain to my children my students that the way I and my paycheck is not to present something and see if they understand it but if they don't understand something to teach them in a way that they come away with oh now I get it! And you are doing such a great job explaining the nitty gritty part of watering which is one of the most important parts of having house plants or even of gardening. I will use the #3 to determine if they need water 💧. Sometimes it's gone dry too long, cause I am not sure when to water, losing leaves turned yellowish. ❤

Thank you! Really great video! I like philodendrons. So this is helpful. I had a scandens with tiny leaves, hardly watered it, stayed in medium light. Then I moved & it got terrible gnats!! ...so I put it outside in the sun & rain in spring & lots of it died off. I brought it back inside in a northeastern windowsill and it surprisingly popped out tons of new BIG leaves. Like the size of my hand! Now it’s in a nice hanging pot in my warm south facing front living room about 6’ away from the window...and we are loving life together 😂 What a neat experience I had with it. You’re right it doesn’t like a lot of water to run through during watering. Just a bit to moisten everything is fine. I feel like me and my plant went through a ton and now I understand it so much more. I would like to see a video about your soil recipe. I would also like some eye candy of all your philodendrons possibly in the room and light situation you have them in. I like to see plants in videos but it would be really helpful to see them where they are actually growing. Thank you!! Sorry for the long message. Have a great day.

Besides buying a cool mist humidifier which brought my humidity level up into the 60s this winter and the house temperature was 68 degrees and felt Pleasant because of the high humidity level you also can boost the humidity by grouping your plants together because they give off water they transpired as they do their thing photosynthesis to make their food the light shining on the green leaves... we all know about humidity trays and misting but grouping plants together and that cool mist humidifier are the best ways to help your plants I think and I'm sure you agree Kaylee you are giving excellent points and that's why everyone loves your videos

Philodendron are fairly overwater friendly I have found so great for people who are just getting started and are too scared to let the plant soil go bone dry between watering! The key though is clay pots, in which water evaporates much faster

Another awesome video, thank you, I hope I am not to late, I have a limp and yellowing leaf on my philodendron speciosum, overwatered AND sitting in water... I moved it inside after transplanting it and watered it through, I didn't have a tray for underneath it yet so I put it in a plastic saucer type thing, it held the water longer I guess...

I am having a heck of a time trying to make my relationship with Alocasia work out. Slowly but surely I will conquer her😆😆. Begonias are a bit iffy too but maybe my humidifier will fix both those problem plants.

@@RuthiesSucculentObsession Yes, I have a heck of time with lithops and astrophytrum asteria. Slowly learning that lithops need more water that I originally thought. For alocasias, I water less than colocasias. Also, I was able to get rid of the fungus with a copper fungicide.

I've never had any luck with those probes I find there are very and accurate at least with the soil pH as far as watering is concerned I just go to my plant room and say hey who needs water and whoever yells back me can I give them water just got to listen to your plants they do talk

I just purchades a Philodendron Melanochrysum and as you were listing the relatively easy philodendrons, i was like "OH GOD PLEASE KAYLEE SAY MELANOCHRYSUM!" hahaha.. i have a prince of orange, that has grown so so well in my care, when i received it, it was so beat up but it's grown 3 new leaves since my care. I also have a neon philodendron hederacium, and philodendron cordatum. I just love Aroids. I love watching your videos.

Thank you for this video! I just received a black and gold philodendron start and the top of the soil is looking dry so I need to double check when it should be watered. The scheduled watering things drives me a lityle crazy! 😬 Im like "Cmon, people. At the very least let's not forget that water evaporates faster when it's hotter or when the air is dryer. 😂". Ive seen so many people online hate on moisture meters....but my skin sensitivity fluctuates with my health concerns and my finger tips have a partial loss of sensation. Even after growing plants for 4 years I still feel like Im still guessing when it's appropriate to water. I think I will get a moisture meter!

I bought a hygrometer after watching your calathea video, and it's made such a difference - apparently I can tolerate much lower humidity than tropical plants can :D How do you maintain high humidity in the winter without developing mold issues? I get lots of condensation on my windowsills, and just wiping away residual moisture isn't enough.
