Worked in manufacturing before and mistakes like that happen easy they put the wrong upper on the truck but because the serial number matched the base they tagged it as titanium. Easy fix they just need to mark specifics on both base and top trucks.

Another way to tell if the axle is titanium is to see if it’s magnetic or not. A magnet will stick to steel axles, but not titanium ones.
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 6 лет назад
Yeah I think a magnet will do the trick nicely, maybe a bit depending on the alloy used though? I know in some thieves trucks, the amount of titanium is ridiculously low, and the lower the amount of titanium the more the magnet will react. In most cases though, I think that the magnet test will work just fine! At first I did not know that stainless steele was magnetic enough. Thanks for the idea! :-)

Hallow me to mention that the titanium indys baseplate is thinner that reg baseplates.I believe they chased the grams there first...
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 4 года назад
Yeah, the forged baseplate is thinner, which makes the entire truck lighter. The difference in weight that I measured in this video, however, is due to different material in the axles of the two trucks, since both trucks have the forged baseplate. Also the titanium axle is not hollow, instead it's a solid axle but with titanium instead of regular steel. :-)

Hey man, this looks to be something a shop employee screwed up in tagging it. Seeing that truck companies don’t package them in pairs from the factory, it’s actually something we all should be looking for. This is great nformation because I am getting 144’s in titanium. Here’s the one thing I don’t really understand: the titanium hangers (in Made2’footage of Reynolds) it’s clearly shinier, more glistening and less dull than standards. And I know! The hanger on both are made of aluminum.. so I’m not sure if they polish the aluminum or what but I did notice they look cleaner and blingish. Do you notice this?
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 5 лет назад
I acutally think someone screwed this up during assembly of the trucks, since the baseplate is a forged baseplate. I don't think (could be wrong though) that independent has a truck in ther line up that uses a forged baseplate with a standard steel axle hanger. So my guess is that someone took a baseplate from either a forged hollow truck or a titanum truck and combined that with a steel axle hanger that should have been combined with a regular polished steel axle truck. But I am guessing. :-) I have a pair of reguler polished trucks and those definiely have a less shiny look to them, but I don't know if thats due to the material of the truck. My polished trucks are pretty old and I belive that regular hollow hangers also are quite shiny. Good luck with your indy 144's, those are awesome trucks and I don't think you need to worry about getting the wrong materials in your trucks. That being said, I will never buy a new truck and skate it before verifying that it weighs as much as it should. :-P

I just bought a pair of Indy Titanium so I will be weighing / magnet check them. Thanks for the tip! I just started skateboarding again so don't know what regular Indy trucks look like exactly. With the Titanium version it looks like they are showing off the Titanium axle because it's not totally covered by the hanger. I was guessing the axle would be totally covered with the normal version. Or is that an Indy thing?
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 4 года назад
The axle is visible on both the standard indy truck and the titanium. It's really difficult to see any difference. It's a slightly different color between the titanium and the regular steel axle, but it's not very noticable if you are not comparing them side by side. I always weigh my new trucks now! xD Good luck man!

@@fd_skate @@fd_skate After seeing your video I wanted to change my wheels anyway so weighed 1 truck 149 and was 340 grams so OK. But then I noticed on the truck hanger printed " TITANIUM". It's on one of the hanger end on the side of the kingpin. There's a chance they started printing it after they noticed they messed up. Maybe someone on the assembly line was having a business on the side haha I only weighed one of them and I can't find a magnet so maybe the print is fake and I also have one heavier... Can you do a review on your thunder vs independent titanium trucks and weight specifications
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 6 лет назад
That is actually an interesting idea. I have three complete setups right now, one with indy titaniums, one with thunder titaniums and one with thunder hollows. Weirdly enough the biggest difference in feel between those trucks are between the Thunder hollows and the Thunder titaniums, but I think that can be due to the fact that Thunders changed their bushings. I have original bushings on all the trucks, but the two Thunder trucks still have different bushings. The Thunder titanium is by far the lightest truck of them all, easily beating the indy titanium truck in regards to weight, but I really like both the trucks. I can recommend Ben Degros review of the difference between the geometry of Thunders vs Independent, that review is really interesting and explains why it can be a good idea to have both indys and thunders in your truck arsenal. Thanks for the idea of the review, if I will definitely keep that idea in mind. :-)

I did send them back just after shooting the video, and the store did send out a new set of trucks the day after I contacted them. I think that it is just a rare screwup. That being said, when I got the new set of trucks, the first thing that I did was weighing the trucks, and I will continue weighing all my titanium trucks regardless of the brand. I actually ordered me a set of Thunder titaniums just the day before yesterday, and they will probably arrive today. I will weigh those trucks as well! :-) And if someone wonders why I am purchasing Thunders then I will say that it is definately not because I don't love my indy titaniums, because I really do. It's a sick truck, super light and super turny. But the Thunders are even more light weight, and they sit a bit lower, so I am just curious to try the Thunders. :-)

i skated a pair of regular thunders for a year, then got some titanium thunders and skated them for 2 years. now since i am done with the titanium thunders, i am back on regular thunders. i even notice a difference in feel between the forged and cast base plates. honestly though, the more you skate, the more you will notice little things (like) that with your setup! so what i'm saying is that if you skated regular indys before hand (which i think you said you did) you would notice the difference. if you had NEVER skated regular indys, then it would be much harder to tell. sorry for the short story! i probably suffer from some sort of un-diagnosed ADHD that plays into my skate gear madness. haha... anyway keep it up!

Hehe, thanks for the insight man! The indys were actually my first titanium trucks. I have skated indys before the titaniums, but I skated both Ace, Thunders and even Avenue for two-three years before getting back to independent. I really dig the titaniums but I really cant tell much difference between the regular stage 11 and the titanium version since I skated so many other trucks in between. How come you switched from Thunder titaniums to regular thunders? I actually picked up a couple of Thunder titaniums at the post office TODAY. :-) I have hollow Thunders on my spare skateboard, but I have never skated the Thunder titaniums. Hehe, skate gear madness is quite common among skaters, I think! xD

Can someone help me out with this size I have and tell me if this is a good setup or not. I'm a old school skater in the 80's and alot has changed through the years of sizes and stuff so I wanna make sure i'm getting the correct size before buying. Ok the deck is a 9.625 - 31.8 and the trucks are the Independent 169 new stage 10.5 forged titanium. Also what size wheels any brand will I need and I like my wheels hard to 101a for sliding? I just want something correct where I can skate street only and with good fast speed that's all.
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 5 лет назад
It's all down to personal preference, but imo your deck/setup is very wide for streetskating. If you intend to do technical street skating like, like flip tricks, it will be a LOT to flip around, and it will get pretty heavy. That being said, Aaron Kyro kickflipped a surf board, so it definitely can be done and if you intend to mostly cruise around a wider deck offers great stability. For technical street skating I would keep my setup somewhere 7.75" and 8.5", maybe slightly wider if you are a big felllow! About, wheelsize, don't go bigger than 54s for street skating. If you get Bones or Spitfires chances are you wont get disappointed. I also skated in the 80's (for a year or so) and got back to skating about six years ago. :-) Good luck Mike!
@FrostyMikeGaming
@FrostyMikeGaming 5 лет назад
Thanks for writing back and that helps alot. I use to skate the original Independent trucks but I wanted to test out something lighter weight since that board might be heavy as I remember. The deck is Almost Rodney Mullen poker deck with slick on it and back in the 90's I had the pool table version of it. I always liked the bigger boards like Natas Kaupas so going lower I never tryed and since i'm 6 ft at 230 i'm guessing my setup is good for my weight but getting more feedback is a help. :) Well since I live in Kentucky there ain't that many sidewalks as Cali, LA has and that's where I was born at so since we have a skate park I go there but I prefer streets like main roads and parking lots. Ok i'll check those sizes in wheels and see how big they are. I like big wheels but not to big and I like power sliding alot so I don't remember if I had hard or soft back then. So do you think 54 in wheels will look perfect fit for my setup?
@fd_skate
@fd_skate 5 лет назад
@@FrostyMikeGaming I think 54 wheels is a good compromise. You could of course go higher if you intend to do a LOT of powerslides, since concrete and pavement will wear down wheels pretty fast when powersliding. :-)
@FrostyMikeGaming
@FrostyMikeGaming 5 лет назад
Yeah that's true about the road being a issue especially little rocks and stuff and if I do go higher then 56 will be it but i'll take a look in some Spitfire and Bone wheels. I do appreciate your help man and it's been awhile since I skated so everything is new to me again especially in the sizes. Yeah power sliding and kick flips were my favorite moves back then so since I have a bigger board, I know I won't be pulling off these new flip tricks but that's ok. I just want to feel young again and be free on my board and go fast. :)
