Cierva Aero is always working to make sure our partners have the knowledge and tools they need to keep their aircraft in flying shape. This video explains how we safely install and remove AutoGyro rotor blades for maintenance or transport.
This information is not intended to replace any Service Document, but is intended as additional expanded information to help clarify certain procedures. In all cases, the original manufacturer's service and maintenance documents are authoritative.

Nice use of the folding camping stools. Great hint about the balance of the blades during disassembly.

Great video. Your method of balancing the rotor system on camp stools is great. However, I have a problem with some of your advice regarding lubrication and torquing of the retaining bolts. The maintenance manual specifically states that the bolts should have only a very light oil lubrication on the plain segment of the bolt shafts - not on the head, or threads. Further, the manual specifies AG-GRS-01 lubricant which is different to the Lagermeister WHS 2002 grease used for the teeter bolt. My interpretation of this is that the tightening torque specified is for DRY threads and new nyloc nuts. If you lubricate everything the tightening torque should be reduced by approximately 30% to achieve the same compression / clamping forces. Of course the bolts can handle way more but not necessarily the components being assembled. You mention 20 Nm tightening torque, whereas the manual specifies 25 Nm. Having said that, and in view of my comments above I would have thought the torque should be around 17 to 18 Nm if you lubricate everything in sight. Is your 20 Nm figure a 'nod' to the lubrication? ( NB motor vehicle wheel bolts should have similar parameters applied - i.e. specified tightening torques reduced by around 30% to achieve the same clamping forces if you lubricate the threads and seats etc.). Another matter is your use of what appears to be 'any old' lithium grease. Many non-aviation specific lubricants can have a detrimental effect on some alloys. Now, I am not an engineer of any sort - just an AutoGyro Cavalon owner who does a lot of the maintenance in conjunction with advice and assistance from a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. and so I am ready to stand to be corrected on any of the foregoing. Regards David, New Zealand

Thanks for your interest in the video! You're absolutely correct, the threads on the bolts should not be lubricated, only the shaft of the bolt. If lubricant gets on the threads, it's pretty simple to clean them off. The tightening torque that we received from the factory is a fairly wide range (15-25nm.) The maintenance manual indicates 15nm as the low end, we tighten to 20nm. The grease in the maintenance manual is our grease of choice! We've spoken to the factory and they've said that any quality grease (we specifically use white lithium) is fine on the anodized materials. It's good to see members of our community with this commitment to detail, I'm sure your gyro's in great condition. Do you have any pictures?

Great video. Do you typically reinstall the rotor without doing a string alignment test? If you do a string alignment would you consider doing a video for that?
@CiervaAero
@CiervaAero Год назад
We'll do a string alignment test at periodic inspection intervals (or if excess vibration, etc. is detected,) but not every time the blades are assembled. I'll see about getting a video done on that, thanks for the idea!

what is a good angle of inclination of the blade, and is the trailing edge facing down or up? because I'm confused why it can spin
@CiervaAero
@CiervaAero 2 года назад
The blades are angled with the leading edge up at about two degrees relative to the plane of rotation. This link isn't connected with us, but has a pretty good explanation of the aerodynamics at work www.pilotfriend.com/training/flight_training/rotary/gyro_aeronaut.htm

It depends on which length of blade and rotorhead setup for the gyroplane, but I wouldn't recommend it.
