Loved this case study. Perfect timing. I was the guy on your last video comment section with same p0171. I added the supercharger 5.4 3v and suspected fuel pump. I have around 5v on maf and have fuel sensor on rail. I don't have your snap on scanner but this clarifies alot. My fuel pressure is around 33psi idle no Schrader available. I really suspect the fuel pump now. Truly weight in gold information. You are a pillar in automotive diagnostics. Cheers and Happy Holidays

@@ScannerDanner going to move it to the forums as you suggested. There shouldn't be any significant drop in rpm rise correct? If anything a rise, right? Its an aftermarket assembly made by airtex. My fuel trims on long term go above 10% with little to no drop in short term. Tuner assumed it was a vacuum leak and overlooked fuel delivery. these stock pumps in theory will support around 400rwhp but still a wearable component and I think it's been pushed beyond its limits

Hi Paul. Thanks for the video. Great and full of good stuf as always. I want to discus with you about feul pump current. In this video you say, that cloged fuel filter would cause more apmerage on pump. I think on this fuel delivery design it is not true. Because fuel pressure regulator is in fuel tank, it doesnt mater for the fuel pump how big is restriction after that regulator (fuel pressure after regulator never gets biger than it is set to). So if fuel filter is in line it can be completely cloged and fuel pump amperage and rpm should be the same as if filter is new. Corect me if I am wrong. Thanks again for your sharing of knowledge.
@mnrujiska771
@mnrujiska771 4 года назад
I am also thinking that on this design, clogged fuel filter will not change amperage much. because fuel pressure regulator is in tank, but i don't know for sure how big is bypass hose trou regulator and how it affects amperage.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
I think you are right my friend! Never thought about it much. To be honest, it is really difficult to ID a restricted fuel filter no matter what test you do. Short of t-ing in a gauge before and after the filter and at which point it would be easier to just change the damn thing. Right? But I agree, high amerage on a pump from a plugged filter would only apply to electronic returnless systems and return type systems. NOT mechanical returnless systems like this vehicle has.
@arvydaskraftas6358
@arvydaskraftas6358 4 года назад
I think you are right about changing fuel filter. I think that way: if its clogged filter, nice. You changed it and got it right. But if it was bad fuel pump, after changing it you will change fuel filter anyway. So customer doesnt lose money on both cases.
@richardcranium5839
@richardcranium5839 4 года назад
@@arvydaskraftas6358 heres something to think about- a restricted filter causes pressure build up in the pump plus lower fuel transfer rates causing thermal stress on the pump. a new filter fixes that but has the damage to the pump in the mean time caused irreparable harm? my experience says yes . usually if a filter gets to that point the pump wont be far behind.
@richardcranium5839
@richardcranium5839 4 года назад
@@ScannerDanner a fuel flow volume test will show it sometimes. theoretically speaking yes you would have to test before and after the filter and by that time you are correct ya might as well change it. working with different hydraulic systems over the years(yes a car fuel system is a hydraulic one) often times taps are installed to be able to diffentially pressure or flow test a part or a subsystem. i've found bent twisted and other various restrictions in inaccessable places by using such methods so an open mind that there are alternatives may one day get someone out of a bind. mind exercises like that help get the whole picture in better focus too.

I did a simaler test because my fuel pump would intermittently stop working then not work at all. So I had it towed to a, get this a mechanic shop and told the mechanic what had happen. He went out to the truck and he got the truck to start. Then he called me and asked why I though it was the fuel pump. Saying the truck started. I explained again the procedures I did with my verus. He said it Dosent mean your fuel pump is bad, WOW a mechanic...not. I said hook up your scanner to it and check for yourself. He said all he had was a code reader. Just a minor point, the sections of a commutator are called rotor arms, which might be better term as if you say an 8 bar fuel pump, my first thought is 8 bar of pressure. When you first counted the current peaks and said it was an 8 bar pump, It got a little confusing.

How do you do this test on a speed density system? I'm an FCA tech for the most part unless it's a PZEV we don't use MAF sensors. So I'm just wondering how to do the WOT test on vehicles without MAF. Sorry if it's a dumb question but I'm trying to better understand fuel trim issues. Engine driveability problems are my biggest weak point I'm trying to improve.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
It is no different on a speed density system, you can still use your oxygen sensors as a guide to low power conditions at wide open throttle. If they stay full rich (over 800mv for a narrowband O2) then you DO NOT have a fuel delivery problem. Hope that makes sense.

GTDI means Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection, those fuel systems have a variable speed electronic returnless fuel system. The 3.5L Ti-VCT (Twin Independant Variable Cam Timing) fuel systems have a dual speed MRFS. There is a FPCM or FPDM as some like to call it, but no fuel pressure sensor on the rail.The FPCM controls the fuel pump pressure at 10 or 12 V based on load. Basically the PCM duty cycles the FPCM to control the fuel pump. How i know this? I had an insane case study on 2014 Taurus with the 3.5 NA engine.
@uncommoncents9884
@uncommoncents9884 4 года назад
Great I got a question. I have seen on several occasions the use of the fuel pump waveform to calculate rpm of the pump. My question has to do with the comutator bars. When u have a low current spot in ur waveform wouldn't the current flow be low again at 180° meaning the pump has 16 bars?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
reverse polarity on that same commutator every 180, so it is not the same pattern
@uncommoncents9884
@uncommoncents9884 4 года назад
Great video but I'm still confused. My question is if a single commutator bar is damaged and doesnt allow current flow wouldnt u would see a drop in current flow when it passes both brushes? If so wouldn't 1 rotation of the shaft of the motor be every other dropout?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
In theory that is correct, however I have a case study showing a complete drop out only 1 time per revolution which means when the polarity is reversed it can support current flow, so I suppose it would be a brush to commutator contact issue in that case, not an open winding. An open winding would be as you described

low feul pressure, low amp draw , high RPM, faulty pressure regulator at pump? leaking through ?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
Possible? No way to know if it was that or the impeller of the pump that was worn. On these systems where the regulator is part of the pump assembly, there is no test to determine if it was the regulator or pump or leak in between. Also, this is why, on this design, you MUST change the entire assembly

How would you go about finding a bad injector?
@retiredperson4054
@retiredperson4054 4 года назад
I have a 2010 Altima 2.5S w/Automatic. My OBII device shows codes P0725 and P0826 together. The cars is running fine. I have not cleared the codes (but will tomorrow). The car seems to run fine, no hard start, no stalls nor stutters or shifting issues. I am thinking the Cam-Shaft Position sensor may be one of the OE styles that gets oil contaminated and perhaps it is sending bad info to the power-train? Since P0826 is a Power-train code? Any thoughts?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
I need you to do the homework for me. What are the definitions of those codes? I know they are transmission related but that's it.
@retiredperson4054
@retiredperson4054 4 года назад
@@ScannerDanner Dan, I cleared the codes and they did NOT come back, and there is NO Check Engine Light on either. Code PO725 "Engine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction", and code PO826 is defined as “Up and Down Switch Input Circuit” on vehicles with manually shift-able automatic transmissions. I think the up/down shift code came up because at least a couple of times I have inadvertently moved the shift lever over into the slot for "manual shift mode" when going from Park down to Drive, and then having done it unintentionally I quickly moved it back to the right back into the normal "Drive" shift position. The Engine Speed Sensor is most likely a code connected to either the Cam Shaft Position Sensor, the Crankshaft Position Sensor (aka Transmission Speed Sensor -- As I find it is called out to be the same part by different links). Again this is a 2010 Nissan Altima 2.5L with 103K miles. No other issues. So I think I am good here - Thanks for answering and asking! Richard in KY

@@retiredperson4054 My name is Paul Danner :-) So I looked up the P0725 code and this is a generic code indicating the TCM did not receive an engine RPM signal via the CAN network. You should ABSOLUTELY have an engine code too with this TCM code P0725. IF you do not, this does not bode very well for your transmission control module (TCM). As far as the P0826 code goes, I do NOT think you can cause that code by what you are describing. In other words, operator error, is not an option here. It is very difficult to advise you further on these and almost impossible when the problem is intermittent. Then add that we are talking through text on the screen, makes it even worse. If you find that you need help in the future, post to my forum www.scannerdanner.com It is free to join and I have 4 paid moderators who help me help you guys. Thanks! Hope to see you there.

SCANNERDANNER can you make a "cheat sheet" rows and columns of what the short & long Trims, RPMS would be for a lean condition compared to a RICH condition if you're having a vacuum leak compared to having a fuel pressure issue. It gets very confusing to know what the trims should be at because you have experience when looking at the trims to know if you have a vacuum leak or its a fuel pressure problem but how can you know but just looking at the trims? You can get a lean condition or a Rich condition from a vacuum leak or a fuel pressure issue so how can you tell by just look at the trims?

I have a doubt the filter is after the pressure relief valve so wouldn't be the pressure going to be same if it has the blocked filter or new filter hence the amps are going to be same just my logic
@ScannerDanner

depends on the design, not all of the systems used a pressure relief valve in the tank, in fact most of them do not
@roberthogue6797

With this type of pump/regulator combo, isn’t it possible the both the pump and regulator were still good and you just had the pressure drop simply by a plugged filter? You’d still keep the proper pressure before the plugged filter and have the lower pressure/volume after it.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
I believe I addressed the fuel filter variable in my video? What was the old pump vs new pump, with RPM and Amperage? Refresh my memory. I believe there in lies your answer. Was it lower than normal amperage and higher than normal RPM? Sorry, this lecture was 2 years old and my son Caleb did the edits, so my memory if foggy on this one.
@roberthogue6797
@roberthogue6797 4 года назад
In this case, there was definitely an issue with the mechanicals of the pump. There was an increase in amp and a decrease in rpm with the new pump. Apparently I phrased the question wrong, I was trying to ask if the same symptoms could also be caused simply by a plugged fuel filter? High long term fuel trims/high load %/dropping fuel pressure with increased rpm...

ScannerDanner! I have an issue and can’t figure out what the issue is. I have a misfire cylinder 2. I have a new distributor and new cap and rotor, new plugs and new plug wires, new fuel filter and injectors were just cleaned, O2 sensors are fine and EGR is fine. I found out that I’m not getting spark out of my plug cable on cylinder 2. I changed wires around and still nothing so the dist is not giving spark for cylinder 2. Can you help me out?!?! I’m going insane trying to figure out what the issue is.

Same problem with the old cap? Other than a bad cap and rotor. It sounds like you have an input issue. Is this the correct distributor? Any damage to the trigger wheel or reflector on the shaft of the distributor?

Any other ideas scannerdanner? I’m thinking it’s either going to be the crank sensor or the wire for it, or the ECU but doubt it’s the computer because they rarely go out on these cars. And most likely wouldn’t be the main relay right? Not the PGM-FI?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
@@shanefickett3597 "new distributor"?? Why was the distributor changed? If you are consistently losing spark to only the #2 cylinder, you absolutely have an input problem. Your ECM is receiving garbage in and is providing garbage out. There is no other explanation for what you have going on.

Hi Mr Paul, I'm one of your followers from Oman. I've 2009 GMC terrain I'm having a lean condition on both banks. The nice thing is that the code P2179 says "system too lean off idle" which helps a lot. I used a multimeter as a jumper on the fuel pump relay, the pump runs and I got around 4.6 Amps. Is it weak fuel pump or normal ? Thanks,,

Can you make a visual representation of the difference a good psi with low volume and good volume ?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
All you need to do to test volume is to look at your fuel pressure during a WOT snap of the throttle. Another good test is to look at your oxygen sensors during WOT on a test drive. I never directly measure fuel volume. Not once have I done that in a diagnostic process.

On a system with a return line you can reroute the return to a container to measure flow rate.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
@anti chuckle You can fo sure my friend, it's just not necessary to ID a volume issue
@fascistpedant758
@fascistpedant758 4 года назад
@@ScannerDanner Ofcourse a "good PSI - low volume" condition doesn't really exist in a normal diagnostic situation, but flow rate is a useful indicator of the condition of the pump. It's nice to know your pump still has a little surplus capacity.

I’m a little confused using amperage to prove out good voltage at the pump. If you have a marginal voltage drop, wouldn’t you still have a high amp draw? Maybe next time you have one with a marginal voltage drop record an amp scope pattern to show the difference. Thanks
@TheMagican614
@TheMagican614 4 года назад
If you have voltage drop where you shouldn’t (high resistance) then you would have lower amperage. Using ohms law, you find that the more resistance you add in series to a circuit, you will have a lower amp reading.
@bartscave
@bartscave 4 года назад
TheMagican614 , yes but he said amperage was a little low because it had a mechanical failure. So how are we sure it’s not a little low due to a voltage drop instead?
@TheMagican614
@TheMagican614 4 года назад
Bart Young well in the video when he saw he had around 6 amps he was not concerned at that point with a power or ground problem. Scannerdanner has a lot of experience so he has an idea of what kind of reading he should see. I personal think that if there was a problem with high resistance in the circuit, you would see less current than 6 amps.
