In this video, I give an update on my experience with the trade repurchase (or buy back) process on my 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV. Spoiler alert: I still have my car, so not much has happened, but there is some new and encouraging information.
A couple brief notes from the video: my car has been eligible for battery replacement for a couple months now. I could have taken this option at any time and had my car "fixed," but I've opted not to do that. This entire buy back process has required entirely too much time, effort and frustration on my part. It has been going on for nearly 8 months now, and to have it all end with a result that would have required exactly zero effort on my part is no longer an acceptable resolution for me. GM has asked me to run a gauntlet in order to get a trade repurchase, so the least they can do is reward me with a reasonable trade. IF GM had allowed me to get a battery replacement AND still get the trade when a vehicle is available, I'd have opted to do that. I've already been told that the first thing that will happen when they take possession of my old Bolt is that the battery will be replaced, but I was given a hard "no" when I asked if I could have the battery replaced and still take the trade. They made it very clear (after asking multiple times) that if I have the battery replaced under recall, any and all repurchase options would be voided.
Hopefully I will have more information on this in a few days time, and hopefully it will be good news. In the meantime, please have a safe and merry Christmas, happy holidays, and I will see you next time.

Nikki from TE here - We were told this week that a battery replacement would NOT void the buyback.

Fascinating. My repurchase coordinator said the exact opposite, and they were very adamant about it too. That was about a month ago now. Further proof that nobody really knows what is going on…

I also received an email last week clarifying that "a battery replacement would not void the buyback" I started the buy back process in Nov. BTW

Great to hear from you again. I'm have the software update scheduled for 1/10/22. I have a 2020 Bolt LT. So no battery is coming for some time for me. That's ok as I love the car and don't think that for the price I can get anything close. Good luck 👍.

If not for the trade repurchase, I'd be in the same boat probably. I really like my Bolt, despite its flaws. It works amazingly well as a commuter car and has been really reliable for me, except for this battery nonsense. Good luck with the recall and hopefully you'll get your new battery soon.

I'm just driving & charging my 2018 Bolt as I always have and figured it would take up to 2 years to get the new battery installed. It comes with a new warranty and a 10% increase in range. Not sure why everyone is so impatient. I guess because I was a service manger I know how long these things can take to shake out. As far as the buy back that's the last thing I want as the value of a new larger battery with new warranty makes my car worth more then it's resale.

How are you still going through this process? That’s crazy. I started my process a couple of months ago and we are almost done with the process.

I have had similar experiences with my 2017 buyback. I just got the final approval cash buyback approved..just waiting for the dealer to reach out. Using the buyback as a chance to get into a Mach-E

I’d have probably done something similar, but I’m not in a financial position at this point to increase my car payment. Best of luck to you in the Mach E!

Gm changed the plant shut down through February. My prediction is they will start producing new bolts in 2023. 130,000 new batteries are needed.
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 2 года назад
I agree with this assessment. Building 130,000 batteries takes a long, long time and a lot of resources. GM may run into issues with the union workers at the Bolt assembly plant through if the shut down continues. We shall see. Needless to say, I'm not waiting for the original Bolt EUV I ordered.

Since your last video, we have had not one but two Chevy bolt buybacks. We had a 2017, and just turned in our 2022 EUV today. These bolts are not ready for prime time and you should ditch the entire idea of purchasing one. Maybe in the future if they get their act together but for right now just take the buyback and save yourself these headaches!

I definitely feel your pain, but honestly, my 2019 Bolt has been super reliable up to this point. Even now, the battery issue is the only issue I've had with it in more than 2 years and nearly 40k miles now. If the Bolt EUV has the same reliability, but with a fixed battery, I'll be quite happy with it. If battery issues come up again, GM can have it back for sure.

Hello, any update on your recall?
@thomasliebert6161

I am in the process of a buyback also. Only my buyback is with a existing euv at a dealership. I gave GM the vin number of the car and was told in six to ten weeks a new battery would be sent to the dealership for replacement. it has been five weeks so far with no word on the progress. In another week I plan on trying to call for a update. Fingers crossed.
@wrenchingfool5284

I wish that I had picked an existing EUV at the dealership back in June when they were still for sale. Even though I'd still be in a recall position right now, it would at least be with a new car that is far less likely to catch fire. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. Good luck with your buy back.

Is there a class-action law suit right now that we can jump onto against GM in regards to the Bolt Fire Mess? I paid $51,500 after extended warranty and taxes for my 2017 Bolt Premiere. (In AZ) It’s got 46k miles on it. They told me I would have $51,500 toward an “MSRP Swap”. GM offered $28,500 to “buy it back”. That just seemed too low, so I was trying to go the “MSRP swap” route, but no one wants to give me $51,500 for my Bolt toward another vehicle. So I’m stuck. I think a class-action lawsuit might be better option.
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 2 года назад
I'm sure there probably is a class-action lawsuit (or maybe several) somewhere, but in my opinion, class-action lawsuits rarely benefit the plaintiff in any meaningful way. They mainly just slap the corporation on the wrist and make the lawyers very rich. The buy back / trade repurchase deals depend heavily on your state's lemon and consumer protection laws, as well as vehicle age and mileage. I got lucky (I guess) because Oregon has reasonably decent consumer protection laws, but I also believe that GM knew my car was in the vulnerable range of production date and wanted to get me out of the car. Again, my deal was made before they decided to replace all the batteries. That is speculation, but it was clear many months ago that the majority of vehicles that were catching fire were being built in the late summer to fall of 2018 (mine was built in October 2018). In your case, unless you absolutely want out of the car, I'd wait for the replacement battery. Otherwise, I'd suggest speaking to an attorney about making a case for yourself before trying to hop on board with a class-action lawsuit, because you would probably get much less compensation through a class-action lawsuit than you would if you took the cash repurchase offer. But, I am not an attorney and not qualified to offer any sort of legal advice.

We are waiting for resolution on this with our 2017 Bolt. We just want the buy back. We have had about 5 different people involved. We have submitted all kinds of information at least 4 different times. Some of that info I consider highly confidential and they can’t seem to keep track of it. The car actually works very well for us when it is functioning correctly, with the exception of winter range reduction. I did see a recent report on Green Car Reports comparing available ev’s on that winter range decrease and of course the Bolt is the worst. We aren’t sure what we will do because we never actually got an offer for repurchase with some actual numbers. A new battery with a new warranty would at least free us from the trap we are all currently in. I am not confident that GM will be around to make good on that warranty if needed in the future. I know they won’t be making any more profits off us.

GM isn’t going anywhere as a company. They sold more Silverados in just the US in 2020 than the entire Tesla model line up did worldwide. A failure on their low-production (by comparison) electric vehicle is barely even going to scratch them in the big scheme of things. As much as I would like to see people transition away from gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs, a cursory glance around the streets in any area that isn’t downtown in a busy metropolis will show that isn’t happening any time soon.

@@wrenchingfool5284 I agree with your comment-why would GM go out of business--they still haven't repaid the 50 billion plus dollars that the US govt. gave them in bailouts!

GM and their hot hatch. Not sure after the way they handled the problems with their only ev that I can trust the “leaders in American ev’s “ to do anything right at this point

If I were in a position to do so financially, I'd have just unloaded the car and moved on, but every other EV far more expensive, they are also almost completely unavailable for months, at least here in the pacific NW. The cheapest Tesla Model 3 right now is almost as expensive as our 2021 Model 3 LR was to buy new (the used SR+ currently cost MORE than our LR cost new, which is totally insane), and they are projecting delivery for fall 2022. Mach E isn't fully baked yet, Ioniq5 isn't available yet, ID.4 is just a bit too bland in RWD form and too expensive in AWD form, etc... GM has handled this really, really badly, but I don't believe any other manufacturer would have done any better honestly. I think I'll really like the EUV...when I finally get it. I really, really like my Bolt, despite it's flaws, and the EUV seemed like an even better version of the Bolt when I test drove it.

@@wrenchingfool5284 I honestly put a reservation for ID4 just because of the price and availability. It still gets the tax credits but it feels like a gas car more than an electric car
