An Utterly Fantastic Underground Open World RPG That Ate My Week - Doors of Trithius 

Bought this game because of Splat and gotta say, this was my introduction to classic roguelikes - think Stoneshard, but not that complex. Highly recommend it

This seems like a much better game than Stoneshard, even if the vibe of SS is much more tense. I'm one of the few people that liked the save system and the spartan nature, but the early game is always miserable and development is incredibly slow. Quasimorph does the hardcore turn based stuff better, and Battle Brothers does the whole mercenary band thing better. This feels like what Stoneshard is trying for, and I hate to say that since I'm still excited for the game.

Splat introduced me to this game the first time he covered. One of the best purchasing decisions I've ever made. This game is genuinely fantastic.

Reminds of Stoneshard, and that is a good thing. Both use "sequential turn-base" (when you act, the enemy then acts) and the visuals are also similar.

11:34 It does actually have "explicit durability" under the hood, you just can't see it without one of the Quartermastery perks.

I was literally looking for a new tile based RPG today, already got Qud, Tome and Adom, and then up pops this, nice work. If only Steam's 'Games like this' actually worked!

I picked this up after the last time you reviewed it, it's great. The moment to moment combat can be pretty challenging but like you mentioned there's a lot of leeway and flexibility in the other systems, like saving, ways to get other skills, and the Bethesda leveling. I LOVE the Bethesda style leveling in a classic Rougelike like this, it feels like such a good formula. And like a Bethesda game, it's easy to fall into a crafting/enchanting power loop if you want to. I mostly only have a few nitpicks, like a way to get all recipes on a screen all at once (because some ingredients are shared across categories) and not quite having full keyboard support, like a target range selection. On level ups, the actual level you get is maybe the most inconsequential thing (unless it is something really hard to level up)- what it also does is permanently raise the level cap of that skill (you don't usually start off with a level cap that can get all abilities in that category!) and increases an exp buff on that skill. I think long term you should pay attention to the level caps, as say dumping a bunch of level-up levels into reading wastes that eventual cap you could have spent into a picked-up magic skill or something.

This game is awesome, and the new faction update makes the game so much bigger and better!

Splat doesn't miss. Just downloaded, big fan already. Love the art style, love the music, the first quest I did makes me feel like I'm playing Runescape or something. It's so well written. 10/10!!

I like seeing the retro-modern combo in development. We could never get all that complex back in the day with the limitation so getting retro gameplay with lots of nuanced systems is a big win.

I'm really liking the systems going on, and how you're just a random prat wandering around and the world just doesn't give a fuck about you, and just does what it was doing regardless of whether you're killing the king of dragons or wanking in a cabbage patch. I wish more games were like that.

I'll be honest, this looks good... but I feel like so many of these "rogue lite like Kenshi" games all promise a lot, but end up being about the same as each other. I don't know if I feel like trying this game again after kind of being burned by Soul Ash 2 and a few others

People love retro but i think it a combination of old and new that brings them in. Although, the addictive core formula of a RPG has been the same forever.

Just sat down and played for a couple hours. Died on the map screen and don't even know why. Now I remember why I don't play these games.

I really wish roguelikes/lites would advertise clearly what their permadeath situation was. i dont enjoy traditional roguelike permadeath/save wipes these days, so if all I had to go on was the steam page Id write this game off as not for me. besides you mentioning that it has persistent saves in this video, the only corroboration I could find was a post on the 12th page of the game's steam discussion board.

Splatter, your best videos are the ones where you have developed a character and 4+ hrs into the game. The ones where you start with tutorial and read all the dialogues out loud I cant watch, its that painful. Hope this feedback helps and thank you for putting time into this video!

You should check out the game dread dawn! It’s almost like project zomboid in a way but people are saying it has the potential to be better!

Idk .. there was a time over the years i 've played EVERY open world feature rich roguelike .. and for some reason i left ELONA for last . The freedom to do stuff and feel accomplished was unreal . This game reminded me the Elona's "general setting" .. but i doubt it will reach THAT level of "awesomeness" - i can also add that the "tilesets" are weighting more to the side of "meh" instead of "ok-ish"

I think this is just what the doctor ordered. I like games like this, which invite you to live in a fantasy world and try to survive as an element of that world. Going to check this out, and Stoneshard as well apparently since that is similar to this. Time well spent, I think!

Yeah, this is a great game! Nearly every update seems to require a new start, so I've put it aside for awhile. But I love the game, and I can't wait to get back to it.

Personally I cannot get past the pixelmess graphics of these sort of games. Gives me headaches. But I do concede that this is more my own than the games fault.

You got me at "potion-throwing enemies". That's a good sign of the kind of intricate mechanics I look for in a roguelike.

Is this comparable to Dungeonsmans, or are they two different beasts?

I've been following DoT for a couple years now, and have over 500 hours played at this point. I LOVE how much replayability each new major patch adds. While the game doesn't yet support permadeath or additional challenge modes, I've taken it upon myself to build my own restricted characters to play around with. If you have this game, and haven't yet tried the Unarmed or Nature Magic skill trees, I would highly recommend playing around with them! They have surprising strengths and weaknesses (you will get your *** handed to you early on with Unarmed), but if you manage to survive and train up your skills, you'll find a whole new world of skill interactions to play around with!

Neat, thought the environment outside the dungeons looked like Ultima I or II on my old C-64. I don't really want to go that far back for gameplay and graphics, but I can appreciate it for people who do.
