"We've got another problem, what do we do?" "How about we abandon the galaxy and leave it up to our children to solve again?" "Perfect, get this woman a raise!"
That's right. So they just hang about the galaxy whilest dying off, and at the same time exposing the galaxy to a strain of the infection inflicting them. There were human like species in the galaxy at that point and the asgard were humanoid like as well so the plague affecting them could have affected the asgard as well. What would you have done?
@@nihilityjoey research a cure, perhaps? After all, that Orlin guy was ultimately the one who cured the plague. They most likely couldn’t, because they, like with the Asgard and replicators could only come up with high tech convoluted solutions, and forgot how to think of solutions from the bottom up. Same problem with the wraith - they kept throwing more and more tech at the problem instead of old fashioned military tactics.
@@brainconqueror8095 they did try to find a cure. They couldnt. Orlin only found a cure for that plague because he retook human form as child so that he could retain and remember as much ascended knowledge as he could to help. He even put it like this to cater, that making a stargate in her basement utilising toaster parts was less complicated that dealing with biology.
@@nihilityjoey And it looks like during out lifetime we might learn how to reprogram our dna from ground up Soon we will be more advanced than ancients, ignoring flying cities and gates for now
I want a show about the rise of the ancients. Their troubles with the Ori, the building of Destiny. The alliance between the Asgard and so on. A show only about the Asgards would be cool to. Don't care if it is animated or not.
Rule 1 of any good TV series. Never explain the magic. (Other wise there would be no mystery of the ancients e.g. they continued that in universe with the much older ancients without ever showing them).
I kinda get why they limited it though. We're supposed to let our imagination run wild, we see the breadcrumbs, the bits of legacy and mystery in the Pegasus galaxy. Sometimes if they just showed us more it might make it less interesting.
The corect word is protohistory. Ancient is from around 7000 BC, not 100+ centuries BC like is shown here, not even from 200 K years BC, and not even from 20 K years BC that is also in protohistory. Even around 5000 BC in the old kingdom from Egipt history is mixed with protohistory...
Aphophis was actually an undercover ancient detective that got carried away 😆 This was him before he was assigned his task of being cryofrozen and waiting to see what human life was like later on
The Ancients lost the war because they didn't have the mindset to properly fight one. Look at the Aurora. Sure it is powerful compared to the ships of the Stargate era but the only real weapons it has are its Drones. Once those were depleted it was pretty much useless. That is why the Wraith focused on building large, heavily armored ships with thousands of fighters in order to get the Lanteans to exhaust their Drones so that the remaining ships could just crush the Auroras without issue.
If you would like to see what would have happened had the Ancients not been so arrogant just take a look at what the Replicators did to the Wraith and human populations in such a short period of time.
The Wraith were smarter, and wittier. They stole the ZPM-s from the ancients and that's when they won the war. Even with their superiour numbers, the wraith were losing. The Ancients were just too overpowered. But with ZPM... Unpassable shields.. almost instant regeneration.. epicly strong weapons.. clone factories... Everything the wraith dreamed of. The Ancient were scientist. They were unbarebly stupid and arrogant. They played ignorant against the wraith till half the war was over. The Atlanteans didn't want to acknowledge the wraith as their problem, till they took over 2/3rd of the galaxy. When the ancients finally realised that sending a single patrol ship into a wraith ambush - WITH A ZPM - is just plain idiotic.. it was over. The Wraith already had ZPMs. The ancient realised that with ZPM-s the wraith will easily win. They tried what they can, and lost in a couple years.
MrFbueller129 Yeah. Drones are essentially the perfect weapon. Ancients love perfecting things then moving on. They developed themselves into a corner for aesthetic reasons; Think about that.
Ashakari Singh the reason is drones are pretty much perfect to disable most ships in the Stargate verse, but remember the most powerful beam weapon was built by the Ancients and could take down a hiveship in a single shot
If you think about it it's entirely possible that they thought they had won. It's possible they believed that there were only a handful of hives left and so were in no danger. Also we don't know how the Wraith boarded its possible they sacrificed a hive ship slamming it into an aurora overwhelming its projectors. Its one thing I always hated about the show. It never gives the Wraith or ancients enough credit. The Tau'ri only stand a remote chance because of the situation there isn't enough food so the Wraith can't afford to unify. If they did we would lose in a heart beat.
"So they left earth, in there...flying city?" Also I could never tell for sure if the Ancient outpost was what we saw directly beneath Atlantis as it took off.
@@Cyberbyte_010 Well that was the connection to it but there is much more to the outpost, it is quite large (although of course mostly unfinished and without any stuff in it)
They leave her behind because she has the plague, but the bloke doesn't practice social distancing.. I did some digging - those two artists are married in real life. Ona Grauer and Aaron Dudley.
He had an invisible energy barrier around himself (a version of which was later discovered in Atlantis) That is why they look at each other and telepathically say their good bye forever, but do not touch each other. They maybe soon separated by galaxies, but the true separation occurred by the deadly virus.
they have said that the wraith won very few battles. Yet the wraith just kept coming at them over and over. They simply grew weary of the continues onslaught.
Not only supposed, it is the same one. Too bad there isn't more of Ona Grauer as Ayiana. She was great in the few on screen moments that were given us. I would love to see a whole episode around her character as the ancient. Maybe around her getting infected by the virus and how it came to the sad end that she had to stay alone on earth.
+mrfbueler I believe u are correct the ancients had the means to defeat the wrath such as time travel etc but wouldn't allow themselves to use them because of morals
+Kevin Perry u are right. U cant change history everytime when u something screw it up. Just like we cant change our history. Like World wars and so on. This is what SG is. SG showing this morals problems. SG is more then only sci-fi. I think, SG is unappreciated. Maybe one day we will see SG appreciated.
I like Stargate. watched it a lot while I was growing up. But the Ancients were some of the worse precursors in scifi. They were kinda dickish in a few places.
They could have at least picked up all of their dangerous tech before ascending. One of the worst issues with the ancients was that one episode about the super weapon they left on a world that they destroyed for misusing it and would destroy any other race that would use it regardless of the reasons. I can't remember the name of that one but I do remember it was the one where they met an ancient who descended to help them.
Nostripe361 yea I remember that one and in that case it's true ! But a lot of the times the galaxy gets saved by the same abandoned tech such as Atlantis , weapon on dakara , puddle jumper with time control module , ancient knowledge devices etc
I think it is safe to assume that they updated the sensors and engine and so on but there isn't really much to optimize in terms of still having tk be compatible with the Stargate system
I don't think it was just their tech not measuring up the to Wraith's numerical superiority. It was also the fact that the Lanteans/Ancients were a race of scientists and philosophers not warriors. Sure they had warships but they lacked the tactical skill to use them properly, probably because they had never been challenged by any race before.
Well for all we know this might just be an older version of a puddle jumper. The ancients might have made significant enhancements to the jumpers during their stay in Pagasus. I wont be surprised if the cloak wasnt invented/integrated into jumpers until the war vs the wraith began
@Istojataachatearme The Ancients originally evolved in a distant galaxy where they were called the Altera. They came to our galaxy, which they called Avalon, after being forced to leave because of an idealogical divide within their culture. After millions of years they left with Atlantis for the Pegasus galaxy to escape a plague. There, they became known as the Lanteans or simply the ancestors but after the Wraith war, returned to Earth leaving Atlantis behind.
@isal3 Yes I agree, they should have also made an episode that the salvage another Aurora Class that does not get destroyed but gets modified with Asgard Beam Weapons and Asgard Shields.
@GoldenGohan She was infected with the plague that she infected with in that episode you mentioned, she had to be left behind so she did not infect any more people
one off the big mistake Stargate Atlantis did was to demystify the Ancients And they did it with the Wraith to. Atlantis had some weird writing choices which was a pity because the characters were so good
This beginning scene ..the guy his acting was strange I couldn't tell if he was angry at the woman or the situation..but Yes I would love to see more of what it was like before this happened ....I love STARGATE ATLANTIS .The woman is so beautiful
she was infected with the disease killing off highly evolved beings. she was deemed a carrier and was staying behind to monitor and stay isolated in statis. she was introduced in SG1 when the antartica science team thawed her out and accidentally infected everyone.
We're talking about a race capable of so much, it doesn't make sense that they would so dumb to build weapons with a finite arsenal. Apparently their ships had other weapons but weren't directly seen in the series. Look at that Ancient satellite, it could split a Hive in half with only a Naquada generator, imagine one with a ZPM or 2! It would be un-approachable. The writers just wanted a big nasty enemy regardles but should've put more thought into how powerful the Ancients were.
a couple of drones can destroy any ship because no shield can stop them, that is why wraith ships dont have shields but wraith were able to capture several zpm so they virtually clone infinite ships so at some point you ran out of bullets. when you have a weapons that can destroy any ship you usually focus on that weapon, laser beam is not near efficient like a drone plus it uses plenty of energy we saw this in the Asgard weapon, a weapon capable of destroying ORI ships with probably the most advance shield ever build but it takes several shots to do that
because the Ancient never was out for War like the Ori, they where out in the Space searching for Knowledge and Ascend, and they focused more Shields and Defense, thats why they Lost...
Simon Moore not necessarily the Ancients have beam technology just as advanced as the Asgard’s with a faster transition and far less disorientation as the Ancients likely gave the Asgard a method to stop drones given they were allies
Simon Moore and the Ancients have a better hyperdrives, the Aurora class is bigger than the O’Neill by about three times and under auxiliary power was still able to keep pace with the Daedalus. Meanwhile Atlantis more than four times the size of the O’Neill and is still faster despite needing a shield active full time, something Asgard ships can’t do.
The older you get the more you like to keep things the same, change is not a factor for you anymore, I they're too old to care about new things when the old things are still usable.
the conflict of the asgard with the replicators was a recent one, NOT thousands on years old, when the ancients left, not to when the ancients war at war with the wraith Nox were to peaceful, and the Furlings, well, we dont know much about them
And so... what was so bad about Earth that they wanted to just up and leave? I mean, at the time, we didn't have any annoying Chuck Norris or Justin Bieber memes yet... it was practically a paradise!
Because something with even more efficiency is always sought after. That's one of the reasons why the Ancients were so advanced. So you'd think they'd keep going with that would you!.
Possibly mate but the Wraith should've been as inept at war as the Ancients for the same reasons. They also had nobody to fight prior to the war. I always had a problem with the premise on how the Ancients lost a war.
Anthropidia you and me both. considering as I understand it, the ancients put humans on the world where that weird parasite bug was. it somehow merged with the humans and they became the wraith. what I want to know is how did the get so advanced so fast, to have the tech and numbers to beat the ancients. that was never explained.
russell5078084 it was explained in the book stargaze Atlantis legacy series that ancients were experimenting with staying alive forever without ascension and that is how the wraith came to be. Through experimenting with about 200 people surely against there will if they new what was going to happen. Ancient did pretty messed up shut.
the wraith lost the war due to the ancients own hubris. they saw themselves as superior and never considered the wraith an actual threat until it was toolate. all it took was ONE zpm to supercharge the wraith fleet/army and anytime the wraith managed to get another ZPM it boosted them even more. the ancients never saw anyone else as a threat so they probably kept them in warehouses or production plants for when they were needed and the wraith took em.
@ADFcope most likely they just installed newer technology but also you need to remember that at this stage the ancients where one of the few sentient races in the universe which and when you don't need new technology to survive you generally don't waste time in researching it
The time setting as „millions of years ago“ doesn’t correspond with Stargate Atlantis timeline very well. The Weir that travelled back in time to watch over the cities zpms just travelled back 10.000 years. Same flying city and tech for „millions of years“? That’s some bad technological stasis dudes
Millions of years ago they left the milky way galaxy for Pegasus, 10,000 years ago they left the Pegasus galaxy to come back to the milky way. The Essentially spent a few million years in Pegasus before weir showed up and they fled. Which would explain how they where able to colonize that entire galaxy before leaving.
the ancients left their home galaxy roughly 150+ million years ago to escape origin (they could have been in stasis or .999 speed of light creating a time dilation effect who knows) but found the milky way galaxy and settled on dakara seeding the milky way galaxy with life. 50 million years prior to SG1 the ancients launched destiny with its seedships (which seeded/explored over 38 galaxies with gates) and sometime after that atlantis left earth due to a plague spreading among highly evolved beings. they settled in pegasus which was also probably seeded like dakara and had a newer gate network installed. 10,000 years prior to SG1 the ancients had only atlantis left and everyone escaped back to earth and either settled down starting a new life to guide humanity, created an alliance with the asgard to protect the milky way galaxy from threats (like the wraith) or ascended. scattered within those 10,000 years ancients would periodically descend (like merlin) to steer humanity towards a specific direction. time doesn't matter when you have a space faring highly evolved species that can go into stasis for extremely long periods of time. Weir was an ordinary human and lasted 10,000 years in stasis. the ancients had a much longer lifespan and had mild telepathic and healing abilities which could easily extend time in stasis.
What turned me off about Atlantis was the fact that every time they found ancient tech it would ether get destroyed in the same episode or the next one. For example, The Orion starship, aurora starship, the ancient satellite and the weapon with the unstable zpm.
Has this opening ever confused anyone else when they first watched it? (It still confuses me, tbh.) The scene looks like it was meant to go on longer than it did, only for most of the dialogue meant to be shown getting cut from the entire thing, leaving the two characters we see as just pointless and confusing extras. Or is it just me?
the girl is the same girl we saw in ep "Frozen".. she had abilities several million years before the anciencts met with the wraith and the ancienct were ascended not much after they came back to Earth.. that means the anciencts had abilities like Mckay, the Ori priors, or Anubis's son had.. so why the hell they did not use those powers against the wraith? They could have win the war easily
@@nihilityjoey I never saw any wraith to do simillar things as a Mckay when he almost ascended.. you know leviatate things, switich off warith weapons, healing without feeding
@@marco002 no it wasnt. Why did it not state technology that rivals our own. Remember the wraith evolved from feeding on human, most ancients or their descendents.
they left the pegasus galaxy due to the war with the wraith, they left their original galaxy due to ... different beliefs than the Ori, the ori intended the plague as a "going-away" present, at least that's how I understood it
Is it just me or do they look very time lord-ish? I love Stargate but Atlantis kinda reminds me of Gallifrey in new Who. Don't know who copied who thought, or if it's just a coincidence...
@@hebrewyisraeliteyahawadahite I hope u arent serious. that "negro" and "caucasian" woman looked very racially ambigious, which should be expected of the original progenitor of all human life

I don't understand the timeline, the city of Atlantis left earth several million years ago, but the same Atlantis was underwater in the Pegasus galaxy for only 10 thousand years.
11O1OO111OOO that’s not my issue, it’s just seems like a huge amount of technological stagnation, the city is a ship after all and hasn’t noticeably changed over millions of years

If Ancients departure for Pegasus Galaxy was several millions years ago Because of the plague... How did they do things like 4 races alliance with Asgards, who are 100.000 years old?
I wanna see a Stargate movie reboot that sticks with the canon established by the show, rather than the show being a retcon of the movie and beyond - More than that, I want to know, Canonically, if the crew of the Destiny made it home - or to *A* home. (Sadly impossible as the actors are now too old to realistically play their characters :( )
all we have heard is that the ancients could not beat them because of shear numbers but what of the furlings, nox and the asgard why were they not involved? its a very good point unless i am missing something? :s
